Selangor announces water price hike

The Star3 days ago
KLANG: Households using between 20m3 and 35m3 of water monthly in Selangor will now have to pay RM1.62/m3 which is an increase of 30 sen.
Homes using more than 35m3 of water monthly, which is equivalent to 35,000 litres, will now have to pay RM3.51/m3 for each cubic meter above 35m3, which is an increase of RM0.88/m3.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that this measure was aimed at encouraging more optimal and responsible usage of water.
However, homes using up to 20 cubic meters (m3) will not face any increase and would continue paying the existing rate of RM0.65/m3.
'This means there will be no increase as the current rate underwent a review in February 2024.
'The minimum charge for domestic users will also remain at RM6.50," said Amirudin in a statement on Friday (Aug 1).
The new rates are in tandem with the Federal Government's approval of the application made by the states and Federal Territory Labuan to improve the services of treated water to both people and the various industries.
Those in condominiums, estates and government quarters will see an increase of RM0.41/m3, with consumers having to pay RM2.09 for each cubic metre.
For condominiums, the minimum charge of RM173 per month will remain without any increase, whilst the minimum rate for estates and government quarters will move to RM20.90/month.
'To reduce the cost of living impact on people living in low-cost housing, the new rate will see the lowest increase among all domestic sub-categories by RM0.10/m3 to RM1.18/m3," said Amirudin.
Places of worship and welfare institutions will only see a minimal increase of RM0.10/m3 to RM0.76/m3.
This was to ensure that places of worship and welfare institutions are not severely impacted, said Amirudin.
Not wanting to overly burden businesses, commercial entities and non-domestic buildings will be charged the same rate as domestic households using more than 35/m3, which is RM3.51/m3 with an increase of RM0.57 for each cubic metre.
Non-domestic buildings consuming beyond 35/m3 of water will move up to a rate of RM3.83/m3 for each cubic metre over 35/m3.
Amirudin said since the shipping industry also uses a considerable amount of water, it will now have to pay a new rate of RM8.01/m3.
The state has also included data centres as a new category, given that they require over a million litres per day to cool the systems in these centres.
Data centres will now be charged RM5.31/m3 of water.
Amirudin said the new rates will come into effect on Sept 1 this year.
'The state government will continue to provide free water monthly worth RM13 to 337,851 accounts through the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme (SADE)," added Amirudin.
He said the state government will also increase the household income eligibility for SADE from RM5,000/month to RM6,000/month to assist people who are truly in need.

Carey Island port development discussed at Selangor JBI meeting

SHAH ALAM: The development of a third port on Carey Island was among the key topics discussed during the Selangor Joint Committee for Industrial Coordination (JBI) meeting today. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the proposal is still in early stages and requires further evaluation by the Economy and Finance Ministries. Amirudin said, '(The development of Carey Island) is part of the discussion scope (in the JBI meeting). A proposal was brought up, but we are just beginning and it's still too early. If it proceeds well, (the project) could serve as a significant leap and may be included in the review of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) or the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which is expected to be tabled in June 2026.' The meeting, co-chaired by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, also focused on investment commitments and development agendas. Three Selangor government proposals were tabled: industrial park development, waste-to-energy projects, and an aerospace hub. MITI presented papers on rare earth elements (REE) downstream and midstream development, as well as robotic mechanisation in cleaning operations. Discussions also covered efficient governance aligned with the Speed Selangor policy. Amirudin addressed Selangor's trade imbalance, noting high imports due to food and logistics reliance on Port Klang and KLIA's cargo terminal. He said, 'We import more than we export, but we aim to resolve this by boosting domestic production moving forward.' - Bernama

S'gor MB: Pulau Carey port development in preliminary stages

SHAH ALAM: Plans for a third port in Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat, are still in the preliminary stages, according to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. The topic was among matters discussed during a joint committee meeting on industry coordination between the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) and the Selangor government on Monday (Aug 4). Amirudin noted that discussions about the port's development are in their infancy and require further analysis. "We need to forward this to the Finance Ministry and the Economy Ministry for additional input and study," he explained. "If the project progresses well, it could be incorporated into the 13th Malaysia Plan 2026 to 2030 or the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which is set to be tabled in June 2026," he added, following a three-hour meeting at Dewan Jubli Perak in Bangunan Sultan Abdul Aziz, Shah Alam. The concept of a third port for Port Klang was initially suggested in 2010 as part of the Port Klang Master Plan, envisioning a mega port on Carey Island, Selangor. The proposed facility is expected to handle an annual container throughput of 30 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and aims for completion by 2060. Amirudin co-chaired the Joint Committee Meeting with Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The meeting also covered topics such as the development of waste-to-energy projects, industrial advancements, and an aero park in Selangor. Additionally, MITI papers addressed the development of downstream and midstream rare earth elements (REE).

Rebuilding Putra Heights homes only 24pc complete, MB says Selangor to review progress

SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — Issues regarding the provision of aid to victims of the gas pipe explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, including the extension of house rental financing, will be discussed at the Selangor Economic Action Meeting (MTES) on Friday (Aug 8). Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government will also review the progress of the reconstruction and repair of the victims' homes to ensure work is going on smoothly. 'As I said at the recent Selangor State Legislative Assembly, the process will be completed in October. Yes, it will take some time because it depends on the severity of the damage, but if the (construction) work is slow, we will review it. 'I also mentioned at the assembly sitting the other day that the work is currently at 22 to 24 per cent progress, and carried out by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), while rebuilding work in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baharu is progressing much faster,' he said. He said this at a media conference after the Selangor Joint Committee for Industrial Coordination (JBI) meeting that he co-chaired with the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, at Dewan Jubli Perak here today. Amirudin also denied that there is a difference in the assistance received between victims in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baharu and Taman Putra Heights, adding that it instead depended on the damage suffered based on the stipulated ceiling payment. 'The houses (of the victims) in Putra Heights were completely damaged. We have several categories: houses that are recorded as total loss (will get) up to RM300,000, and those with minor damage up to RM60,000. There are certain processes between the two, there is no difference,' he said. — Bernama
