'Remembering all these years later': 1889 Johnstown Flood anniversary commemorated with luminaria event

Yahoo01-06-2025
ST. MICHAEL, Pa. – Nine-year-old Grace Manack, her mother Rachel Manack and her grandmother Nancy Felix, along with other volunteers, spent time on a windy, cold Saturday lighting luminarias at Johnstown Flood National Memorial.
There were 2,209 bags containing candles – one for each person who died 136 years earlier, in the historic Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889 – placed across the memorial grounds.
'I just think it's important that we're still remembering all these years later because it was such a big event and we shouldn't forget about it,' Felix said.
Rachel Manack said, 'It's pretty special' to participate in the luminaria event with her family.
'I grew up right two miles from here,' she said. 'I definitely remember coming to the 100th anniversary with my grandparents. Then starting to come back with my daughter and sharing the story – we drive through this (park) every single day on our way to drop her off for school – so it's nice to keep that local history and also give back.'
Grace Manack, who attends Forest Hills Elementary School, was 'really happy to do something for the community.'
Leading up to the anniversary day, students from the elementary school also wrote the individual names of victims in black marker on each white bag.
'It's a nice connection with the next generation of school children to learn about this flood,' said Elizabeth Shope, the park's public information officer. 'This history happened right in their backyard. What I really love is when they come out to the park on May 31 with their families because they want to see the bags lit up at night, so they make a connection with it outside of just learning about this event in school.'
Zoey Kurcin, a Greater Johnstown High School student and Girl Scout Troop 60122 member, said seeing the names on the bags 'makes you realize, 'Wow, these were like real people.''
Kurcin added: 'It's not just something that was just made up that your parents tell you the story about. This was like an actual, real thing that happened in the town that you live in.'

Cherry Creek School District hopes to improve teacher shortage with program to recruit and train aspiring educators

Cherry Creek Schools in the southern part of the Denver metro area is finding a way to address the national teacher shortage by growing and training their own teachers. Through a program, aspiring teachers get hands-on experience with the support of district teachers, while still attending college. The Aspiring Educator Pathway program is now in its second year and has more than doubled in size since starting. The program has grown from 16 apprentice and aspiring teachers last year to now nearly 60 this year. All the apprentice teachers have been paired with mentor teachers at 15 schools across the district. For the past couple weeks, they've also met to prepare for the start of the school year. Shae Brock worked in a 5th grade classroom last year as part of the aspiring educator pathway program. "It was something that was super exciting for me, and I knew it could be super life changing," said Brock. Brock attends the Community College of Aurora, which has a partnership with Cherry Creek School District for the program. While students take college classes, they also work full-time in a classroom and will become licensed teachers when they graduate. Melissa Klemenz, is the assistant director of the program, and said in traditional teacher-prep programs, students go to school for 3 ½ years and then during their last semester, they begin student teaching. She added that's why the district's superintendent worked to come up with a better way to prepare teachers. She said the goal is to recruit and retain teachers in the district and also provide the best education to students. "We really believe that educators need better preparation to in order to be the best for their students in the classroom," said Klemenz. "There is a teacher shortage, and so the more that we can have teachers that are prepared and feel comfortable in the classroom, as well as growing our own pathway to become teachers, will really help students benefit." In the first year of the program, Klemenz said there was improved student assessment and more positive classroom environments. For mentor teachers like Katrina Shroyer, she's also seen the growth in her students. "They have another person that cares about them, that wants them to be successful, that is there to impact their growth," said Shroyer. "We were a team and because they (apprentice teachers) were there every day, they knew the kids just like I knew them. As part of the four-year-program, mentees get more than 4,500 hours of experience inside the classroom, compared to 700 hours through a traditional pathway or regular student teaching. "I was in kindergarten as a student teacher, but it wasn't as intense as this program. I would go to school about two days a week and only be at the school part time," said Brock. "I think during student teaching, I was missing so many key opportunities that was Important for my journey as a teacher." The program also addresses student debt. While apprentice teachers are working at the district, their costs for college classes each year drops down to $15,000. Not only is Brock working a full-time job and getting a paycheck, but she's also getting a jumpstart in her career. "I really have been immersed in a school and school environment and working alongside with a teacher in their classroom, and what it's like to co-teach," said Brock. "I've learned a lot about how to build relationships with students, lesson planning, and, you know, really knowing what it takes to become a teacher," said Brock. This year as part of the program, the district also launched a Special Education Aspiring Educator Pathway. With special education position hard to fill, people are not going into that field of education as often. More than 20 teacher apprentices have signed up are focused in special education. Cherry Creek School District teachers will return to their classrooms this week and the apprentice teachers will also be joining them to get classrooms prepared and ready to welcome students back next week.

Clark Street subway station in Brooklyn closed indefinitely after awning collapse

Brooklyn's Clark Street subway station has been shut down indefinitely following the collapse a hotel awning above its entrance. Surveillance video captured the moment Sunday morning when the awning came crashing down in front of the 2 and 3 Clark Street station. Thankfully, nobody was nearby when it happened, and there were no injuries. A spokesperson from the Department of Buildings said the 15-foot by 20-foot awning showed signs of poor maintenance, but the investigation into the collapse is continuing. The station's entrances are located within the same building where the awning collapsed. A similar awning is on the other side of the hotel, and investigators are inspecting it, saying it shows similar signs of corrosion as the awning that collapsed. That means there's no way right now to get in or out of the station, hence its closure. The station's closure is frustrating businesses and residents in Brooklyn Heights, and adding inconvenience to the daily commute. MTA officials spoke about those concerns Monday morning after announcing they are not sure when the station would be able to be reopened. "We're as frustrated as they are. We have a service that we are willing and ready to provide, and so not having the ability to provide customers the transportation that they need and deserve is just unacceptable. We've elevated it to the top," the MTA President of NYC Transit Demetrius Crichlow added Monday after checking out the damage. "So the first thing is how do we get service back to this station. And there are two entrances that need to be addressed - which one can we get done the fastest to get customers safely into the station." Trains are still running though the Clark Street station, just not stopping there for now. City officials say the building is the responsibility of Educational Housing Services, and adds EHS has been responsible for the lobby entrance since 1915. Councilman Lincoln Restler said the building is the responsibility of Educational Housing Services, or EHS, which provides dormitory housing. Just this past Friday, Restler says he met with the NYC Transit president about a game plan to address issues with EHS. "We get complaints from our constituents, our neighbors, every week about the stench of sewage, about the grime and the filth," Restler said. CBS News New York reached out to EHS for comment but did not hear back Sunday evening. The DOB website shows two open violations from 2021 related to the building's façade, and a third from 2022 in violation of a local law related to façade safety. The DOB has issued a partial vacate order, which means small businesses like a shoe repair shop, bodega and florist, cannot operate for the time being.
