The cordon and search operation follows an encounter that broke out between terrorists and security forces in the heavily forested Kanzal Mandu area of the Kuchal-Chatroo belt on Wednesday night.
The operation is backed by drones and sniffer dogs, with the cordon further strengthened by additional reinforcements. As per unconfirmed reports, one terrorist is believed to have been injured in the gunbattle, which continued this morning. The encounter started when police, assisted by the Army and CRPF, launched a cordon and search operation in the Kuchal area of Chatroo around 7:45 pm on Wednesday following information about the presence of terrorists, they said.
The officials said the terrorists opened fire on noticing the search parties, leading to a gunfight which was continuing when last reports came in. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to maintain a tight cordon and neutralise the terrorists, who are affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, the officials said.
According to reports, top terrorists Saifullah and Adil are believed to be operating in the hills of the district. This is the second encounter in the Jammu region in the past one week. On June 26, a Pakistan-based JeM terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces, and three of his associates escaped into the forested area of the Basantgarh belt of Udhampur district. --

Subsequent probes linked him to a series of offshore entities and unaccounted wealth, with alleged connections to defence procurement deals. He reportedly acted as a middleman and consultant for various foreign arms manufacturers seeking contracts with the Indian the court now declaring him a fugitive economic offender, the ED is expected to intensify efforts to attach and seize Bhandari's known properties and financial interests. Bilawal Bhutto Says Pakistan Has No Objection To Extraditing 'Individuals Of Concern' To India
Last Updated: Bilawal Bhutto said Pakistan would be willing to arrest any "individual of concern" if India is willing to participate in the process and present evidence of the same. Former Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said his country had no objection to extraditing 'individuals of concern" to India as a confidence-building measure, as long as India shows willingness to cooperate with its neighbour. In an interview with Al Jazeera on Friday, Bilawal responded to a question about extraditing Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as possible concessions and good-faith gestures to India. 'As part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," he said, while accusing India of not complying with Pakistan to stop cross-border terrorism. 'If India Cooperates…' 'India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place. It's important … to present evidence within these courts, for people to come over from India to testify, to put up with whatever the counter-accusations will be," said Bilawal. 'If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern." Masood Azhar, who has been linked to a string of terror attacks in India- including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the 2016 Pathankot airbase assault and the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing- was designated a UN global terrorist in 2019. Meanwhile, Saeed – the mastermind of the 26/11 attack – is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing. Bilawal also stressed that Pakistan had no knowledge of the location of Azhar and said he would be arrested if New Delhi provides credible evidence that he is on Pakistani soil. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman also suggested that Azhar may be in Afghanistan. 'New Abnormal' Furthermore, Bilawal expressed concern about India's renewed policy to pursue terrorists, saying it does not serve the interests of either country and termed it a 'new abnormal". India said any further discussions with Pakistan would only be on terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), after ties deteriorated sharply following a terror attack by Lashkar-linked terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. India and Pakistan exchanged four days of hostilities after New Delhi launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in the neighbouring country. Delhi Court declares arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive economic offender
New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): A Delhi special court on Saturday declared UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a Fugitive Economic Offender under the Fugitive Economic Offenders (FEO) Act, in connection with an income tax case involving undisclosed foreign assets. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal following a plea by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which alleged that Bhandari had deliberately evaded Indian legal proceedings and possessed foreign assets exceeding Rs 100 crore. The agency emphasised that the UK court's refusal to extradite Bhandari had no bearing on the current proceedings, which are independent and governed by Indian law. Bhandari, however, contested the ED's plea, arguing that his residence in the UK is lawful and backed by a ruling from the London High Court, which denied his extradition, citing concerns over his safety in Tihar jail. His counsel, senior advocate Maninder Singh, claimed the ED's application was vague, lacked jurisdiction, and failed to meet the legal threshold under the FEO Act. Singh further argued that the monetary value of the alleged offence did not exceed 100 crore, referencing a 2020 submission by the Income Tax Department. He also pointed out that Bhandari had been discharged by the UK High Court, and no fresh warrants were pending against him. Special Public Prosecutor Zoheb Hossain appeared for the Enforcement Directorate in the matter. The UK High Court had earlier blocked Bhandari's extradition on human rights grounds, citing risks of extortion and violence in Indian custody.
