Texans rebuild entire roster in new building-from-scratch NFL player draft
How many Texans would show up with the AFC South champions? How many would join rivals like Indianapolis, Jacksonville and Tennessee? Which players from Houston would be considered first-round talents?
NFL.com's Chad Reuter put together a hypothetical seven-round draft where teams would build their team from scratch and the order would be the order of the 2025 NFL draft, but then reversed order every round. So the Texans might select at No. 25 for Round 1, but they'd be at Pick No. 40 in Round 2.
So, how did the Texans fare? Let's just say DeMeco Ryans should be ecstatic about the selections to build a foundation around his defese for the long haul.

Analysis
From a defensive standpoint, this group would be an excellent start to contend from the jump, plus Houston would get a few No. 1 options at critical positions on the offensive line and wide receiver position.
However, the Texans ignored a pair of premium positions at tackle and tight end.
In Round 1, C.J. Stroud was off within the first 20 picks, but Derek Stingley and Will Anderson were still in on the board. Without the right option at QB, Houston lands perhaps the league's best defensive tackle in Jones, who's posted back-to-back double-digit sack seasons in 2022 and 2023.
While Stingley was still on the board at No. 40, passing on the league's consensus top corner in Surtain would be foolish. Yes, Stingley has been one of the league's elite defensive backs over the past two seasons, but the All-Pro defender from Denver just won Defensive Player of the Year after being targeted on just 10.9% of his coverage snaps this season -- the lowest rate among 83 cornerbacks with 300 or more coverage snaps.
In Round 3, Danielle Hunter was selected within the first five picks, taking him out of the conversation before any deal could be struck. The same goes for former Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil (No. 71), Anderson (No. 73) and Nico Collins (No. 76). Outside of receiver Drake London and offensive tackle Jake Matthews, Humphrey, who likely is now the league's top center following Frank Ragnow's retirement, makes the most sense.
In Round 4, pickings are slim at quarterback. Tyler Shough was the only other quarterback left on the board. So Richardson, who still has upside and a runner, might fit in Nick Caley's offense just fine.
In Round 5, Houston secures a former Pro Bowler off the edge in Lawrence, though Rashan Gary might have more upside because of his age. Last season with the Cowboys, Lawrence only played in four games, so perhaps a change of scenery could do wonders for his career.
In Round 6, Winfield is a great addition on the back end who will fit Ryans' S.W.A.R.M. mentality with a hard-hitting demeanor. In Round 7, the Texans finally land a receiver with Aiyuk, who, despite coming off a torn ACL, likely was the best option among pass-catchers.

Minnesota Vikings No Longer Babying JJ McCarthy
In a few weeks, JJ McCarthy and his Minnesota Vikings teammates will gather at TCO Performance Center in Eagan for the start of 2025 Training Camp. It will be the former No. 10 overall draft pick's second Vikings training camp. With that being said this time around will be much different. Last summer, head coach Kevin O'Connell made his development plan for McCarthy public knowledge. He was going to start the rookie in QB preschool, where Vikings coaches would wrap him in mental bubble wrap and hit him with the football equivalent of kid gloves. The Vikings didn't even want to think about McCarthy taking over under center, let alone answer questions on it. In fact, Kwesi reiterated in a recent interview that short of a Sam Darnold injury, there was almost no path to McCarthy starting in 2024. That's just not how KOC's quarterback school works. Well, not for the highest QB draft pick in Minnesota Vikings history. Instead, the plan O'Connell developed for McCarthy last offseason was a tiered program focused most heavily on gaining confidence, without the pressure of performing on Sundays. That's why fans were so shocked/excited when McCarthy went off for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 11 of 17 passing in his first and only 2024 preseason game (vs Raiders). And according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis, last year's bubble wrap has been popped and the coaches have taken their kid gloves off. They've loaded up his playbook and put him in charge at the line of scrimmage. In other words, it's sink or swim time for the University of Michigan alum, repaired meniscus be damned. The Vikings weren't babying J.J. McCarthy this spring. He may have been coming off of a torn meniscus, and he may only be in his second season, but Minnesota's staff made the tests difficult. McCarthy received lengthy call sheets before practices. He was responsible for calls at the line of scrimmage. From what Lewis witnessed this spring and what he's hearing behind the scenes from his many Minnesota Vikings sources, McCarthy has continued to impress. The focus, instead, has been taking heat off his fastball when necessary, especially down the field when layering passes between levels of the opposing defense. When bodies start really flying in a couple months, the MN Vikings hope that this harder coaching style will make his transition from protected rookie to team leader a little easier. McCarthy didn't float perfectly through the weeks, but a steady stream of growth imprinted on the staffers monitoring him every day. He threw the ball with accuracy. His arm strength stood out. His ability to layer different throws continues to be the priority physically. However, the mental challenges of the spring became the most important. The team's hope is that making it as hard as it's been over the past few months will supercharge growth come training camp and the season. Max Brosmer Already Turning Heads Inside MN Vikings Organization
There are a ton of intriguing storylines to follow entering Minnesota Vikings training camp later this month, many of which begin and end at the quarterback position. Not only will the Vikings enter camp for the third-straight season with a new QB penciled in under center, but this time it's 2024 No. 10 overall pick, JJ McCarthy. Behind the redshirt rookie, Minnesota has 24 y/o Sam Howell, 29 y/o Brett Rypien and undrafted 2024 Minnesota Gophers one-and-done quarterback, Max Brosmer. For now, the expectation is that Rypien and Howell will compete for the QB2 job this summer, while the former Gopher will ultimately be cut or moved to the practice squad. But throughout OTAs and minicamp, McCarthy took the majority of reps at QB, while the rest were divvied out to Howell and Rypien. Brosmer, meanwhile, didn't get a ton of opportunities. Vikings insider Alec Lewis (The Athletic), for example, came away intrigued by how much Vikings staffers are raving about Brosmer's work ethic, professional approach and just how quickly he's picking up on the intricacies of head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense. From the sounds of it, they aren't going to let him leave the building anytime soon. Max Brosmer, QB: Intriguing is the best way to describe his spring. Multiple staffers raved about his ability to pick up small intricacies. His professional approach and ability to process should keep him in the league for a while. Alec Lewis – The Athletic During his only season in Dinkytown, Brosmer finished with the second-highest single-season completion percentage in Gopher football history, at 66.5%. He also tossed for the 3rd-most yards (2,828) and 8th-most touchdowns (18). Had he joined PJ Fleck & Co one year earlier, there's no telling the records he would have set. Did Minnesota Vikings find a QB gem in the rough? Instead, we now get to enjoy him in a purple uniform. Unlike other Gopher QBs who have gotten an opportunity with the Vikings, they really seem to like what they see in Max — who they guaranteed $246,000 as a 2025 undrafted free agent. Advertisement It's no surprise that those inside the Minnesota Vikings organization have been impressed by Max Brosmer this summer. He came onto the U of M campus last summer with that same approach, raising the bar not just for his new Gopher teammates, but everyone inside the football program.
