The Ottawa Redblacks did what they had to for their first win of the Canadian Football League season Saturday.

Article content
On a windy, rainy and cold afternoon at McMahon Stadium, the Redblacks used a strong running game, a stout defence and the kicking boot of Lewis Ward to hand the Calgary Stampeders their first loss of the season.
Article content
In the 20-12 victory that improved the Redblacks record to 1-2 and moved them from last in the East Division into second place, Dustin Crum surely improved his standing from third-string quarterback to the primary backup behind the injured Dru Brown by not turning the ball over and picking up the W.

Crum, who completed just nine of 22 passes because the conditions gave normally sure-handed receivers slippery fingers, ran 11 times for 64 yards.

And, while William Stanback had his best game as a Redblack with nine carries for 82 yards, stealing the spotlight was his platoon partner in the backfield.
Article content
Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye scored the game's only touchdown with 5:02 left, when he pulled in a nine-yard pass from Crum.
Article content
Right before that, Adeboboye made the biggest offensive play of the day when he took a handoff and burst up the middle for a 52-yard gain.
Article content
The Redblacks' defence was credited with five turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception by safety Charlie Ringland, and stopped the Vernon Adams Jr.-directed Calgary offence for the third time on a third-down play to seal the outcome.

Ward was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts with scoring boots of 34, 22, 26 and 33 yards before a late 48-yard attempt hit the left upright and stayed out.
Article content
The Redblacks also cleaned up a trouble spot by taking just four penalties for 26 yards.
Article content
They held a 6-2 first-half lead that could have been mistaken for the score of a Senators-Flames National Hockey League game.
Article content
On Ottawa's first possession, Crum ran three times for 30 yards during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Ward field goal from the 34.
Article content
When Calgary's Rene Paredes was wide with a 43-yard field-goal attempt later in the first quarter, Devonte Dedmon returned the ball to Ottawa's 12-yard line, but the Redblacks' Robert Priester was called for an illegal block, and the ball was brought back to the one.

Bahl, who turned 25 on Friday, had 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) and 35 penalty minutes in 73 games for the Flames this past season. The left-shot blueliner's average ice time of 21:23 ranked third on the Flames. Bahl, a big presence at six-foot-six and 230 pounds, was acquired from New Jersey along with a first-round pick in this year's draft in exchange for goaltender Jacob Markstrom in June 2024. He was drafted by Arizona in the second round (55th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. He has 45 points (seven goals, 38 assists) in 221 career games. Jets sign Haydn Fleury The Winnipeg Jets have signed defenceman Haydn Fleury to a two-year contract, the team announced Saturday. The deal carries an annual average value of $950,000 US. The six-foot-four, 207-pound Fleury signed with Winnipeg as a free agent last July after two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was drafted in the first round (seventh overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014. In 307 career games, including time with the Anaheim Ducks and Seattle Kraken, he has 10 goals and 34 assists. Capitals sign Justin Sourdif and the Kings trade Jordan Spence to the Senators

The Washington Capitals signed a young forward they got from the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, a young defenseman is getting a fresh start and a couple of Canadian teams re-signed veteran players on Saturday. Washington signed forward Justin Sourdif for $1.65 million over two years after sending a second-round pick to Florida for the minor leaguer with four games of NHL experience. Sourdif, 23, scored a goal in his lone call-up this past season and had 10 points in 18 games on the Charlotte Checkers' run to the American Hockey League's Calder Cup Finals. The Capitals are hoping Sourdif, making just over the league minimum at $825,000 annually, fills a hole on their second or third line. There was no room for upward mobility for Sourdif, especially after the Panthers signed playoff MVP Sam Bennett to an eight-year, $64 million contract and could bring back winger Brad Marchand. While hosting the draft in Los Angeles, the Kings traded 24-year-old D-man Jordan Spence to Ottawa for the 67th pick and Colorado's sixth-rounder in 2026. Buffalo also sent Connor Clifton and a second-round pick to Pittsburgh for Conor Timmins and Isaac Beliveau. North of the border, the Calgary Flames extended 6-foot-6 Kevin Bahl to a six-year deal worth just over $32 million, while the Winnipeg Jets shored up their blue line depth by giving Haydn Fleury $1.9 million over the next two seasons. Bahl will count $5.35 million against the salary cap through 2030-31.
