Four arrested after London scientist found dismembered in suitcase
Four people have been arrested after a London scientist was found dismembered in a suitcase in Colombia.
Alessandro Coatti, who worked for the prestigious Royal Society of Biology (RSB), was found by a group of children in Santa Marta in April.
The 42-year-old's head, hands and feet were all found inside the suitcase and his torso and other parts of his body were found more than two weeks later.
Colombia's attorney general's office and Rome's prosecution office have confirmed four people have been arrested, Colombian media reports.
Oswal Moisés Ospino Navarro, Isaac Enrique Márquez Charris, Andrea Camila Berdugo Escorcia and Brian Augusto Cantillo Salcedo have all been detained on suspicion of aggravated homicide.
Local Natalia Villamizar told Metro: 'This case has been horrendous even for a country used to violence.
'Foreign tourists are quite safe here, no one understands what could possibly could have happened.
'I was sure the suspects would be either be arrested or found dead.'
He was staying at a hostel in Santa Marta's historic centre, and a post-mortem examination found he was killed by blunt-force trauma.
His mum, Sandra Lovato, sharedthe last message her son sent her on Mother's Day.
He wrote, five days before his disappearance: 'Hi Mum, I want to come back. I love you, so much.'
Ms Lovato wrote in one social media post: 'I miss you so much, I can't breathe. I miss you, I miss you so much.'
The Italian-born scientist had been a post-graduate neuroscience researcher at University College London.
He was a trained molecular biologist, and worked also as a senior science policy officer.
In October last year he spoke about his work at the RSB and his career trajectory for an Offspring Magazine podcast.
RSB said in a tribute: 'The RSB is devastated to announce the death of former colleague Alessandro Coatti who was murdered in Colombia.
'Alessandro, known as Ale, worked for the Royal Society of Biology for eight years as Science Policy Officer in the Science Policy team before being promoted to Senior Science Policy Officer.
'He was a passionate and dedicated scientist, leading RSB animal science work, writing numerous submissions, organising events, and giving evidence in the House of Commons. He left the RSB at the end of 2024 to volunteer in Ecuador and travel in South America.
'Ale was funny, warm, intelligent, loved by everyone he worked with, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his friends and family at this truly awful time.'

'We've charged a man with murder, and another for assisting an offender, but our inquiries to establish exactly what happened and why are ongoing. 'We'll continue to update and support Reanne's family.' Ms Coulson's older brother Ashley would like to thank the public for everything they have done to help find her, police said. Charles Bronson 'thrilled' to become godparent to girl, 6
Charles Bronson has become godfather to a six-year-old girl whose mum is campaigning for the long-serving prisoner's release. The notorious inmate has struck up a relationship with Maisie Mcneice and her daughter Angel, who have been in regular contact with him. Maisie, 25, from Primrose Hill, north London, is gathering support for his release and is organising a show displaying his artwork. She talks to the 72-year-old every day on the phone and feels she can trust him to look out for Angel, who has also exchanged letters with Bronson. Maisie said: 'They talk to each other all the time on the phone and he adores Angel. 'They've always had a good relationship, he sends her letters and art and she's sent him letters and her own art as well. 'They've always had a nice little relationship and I know I can trust Charlie completely.' Bronson, who has changed his name to Charles Salvador, left Maisie a voicemail saying 'I take it very, very seriously being a godparent' and he is going to take Angel 'to some lovely places' when he is released. He describes Maisie – who has visited Bronson over the past year – as a 'lovely' person who makes up for 'all the pain and misery' in the world. 'Charlie is thrilled at becoming Angel's godfather, it's not just something that he is putting his name to, he is taking it seriously,' Maisie said. Bronson has spent 51 years in prison after first being jailed for armed robbery, before having his term repeatedly extended for attacks on prison staff and inmates. He has taken 11 people hostage. However the admin worker wants the art show in London to reflect the 'positives' in Bronson's life, from his childhood up to the present. The former bare knuckle fighter, who is being held at HMP Woodhill in Buckinghamshire, is preparing for a ninth parole hearing which is due to take place in October. He is one of the UK's longest-serving prisoners. In September 2024, he told Metro that 'my soul is good' and 'I've got no regrets' as he made the case for his release. He said: 'The people outside will go, oh, Charlie, never get out. 'He doesn't want to get out. Look what he's done there. 'Well, let me tell you something – I haven't done nothing bad for the last nearly 10 years. I've practically been a model prisoner. 'And that's down to my art. And I'm bloody proud of it.' Maisie has started a petition to grant Bronson his freedom, believing his long sentence is not 'necessary or justifiable.' Her family knew Bronson's family from Luton, with Maisie's mum initiating contact before her daughter began visiting and speaking on the phone. 'I think he deserves a chance which no one has given him for so long,' Maisie said. Primary school deputy who bit and scratched pupil still allowed to teach kids
Claire Herbert worked at Red Rose Primary School at the time (Picture: Google Maps) A primary school deputy head who bit, scratched and slapped a child has been allowed to continue working with children. Claire Herbert was deputy head teacher and deputy safeguarding lead at Red Rose Primary School in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, when she attacked the child in June 2022. The incident did not happen at the school and there appeared to have been alcohol involved, her tribunal heard. Herbert got into an argument with a girl which became physical. When visited by police three days later, the girl said the teacher bit her hand and head, scratched her with false nails, slapped her, and called her fat. Pictures taken at the time showed bruising, scratches and various red marks on various parts of the girl's body. Responding to the incident via email last October, Herbert said: 'I have read and considered the attached paperwork and I will admit to all allegations listed although it is a blur.' She accepted a conditional police caution in December 2022 for common assault against the child. A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) tribunal found Herbert was guilty of 'unacceptable professional behaviour' which could bring the profession into disrepute. But it stopped short of permanently banning her from teaching, because she 'otherwise appeared to have an unblemished record' and showed 'genuine and significant regret, remorse and insight' over what happened. The tribunal said: 'The panel was mindful that this was an isolated incident which it considered, taking into account the mitigating circumstances and wider context, sat at the less serious end of the possible spectrum of severity. 'The panel took account of the mitigating factors that were present and the contribution Miss Herbert had made, and could continue to make, to the education sector.' Decision maker Marc Cavey, acting on behalf of the Education Secretary, said: 'In my judgment, the extent of the insight and remorse demonstrated by Miss Herbert, when considered alongside the isolated nature of the misconduct found and the mitigating circumstances that were present, means that there is only a very limited risk of the repetition of this behaviour.
