Probe into Daim's ‘undeclared assets' widens to 4 more countries

An MACC senior director, Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed the probe, but declined to comment further. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has expanded its probe into allegedly undeclared assets linked to the late Daim Zainuddin to four more countries. An MACC source said the assets suspected as belonging to Daim's family and proxies were located in the US, Singapore, Japan, Italy, and the island of Jersey, a British crown dependency located off the coast of Normandy, France. The source said the anti-graft agency intends to apply for restraining orders in these countries to prevent the disposal or movement of the assets during investigations, Berita Harian reported. 'MACC has identified assets in several countries that were not declared during investigations conducted over the past few years. The next step is to secure restraining orders as part of further legal action,' the source was quoted as saying. MACC's senior director of the special operations division, Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed the matter but declined to comment further. Last month, MACC took action on several high-value assets in the UK and Malaysia associated with Daim and his family after receiving 'new information' from overseas. On June 3, MACC froze seven properties and a bank account in London believed to be worth £132 million (RM758.2 million), reportedly linked to Daim's widow, Naimah Khalid, and her family. The commission said its investigation found that the movable and immovable assets were relevant to an offence under the anti-money laundering act. However, on Monday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court stayed an earlier ex parte order to freeze the assets following an application by the former finance minister's widow. Two days later, MACC chief Azam Baki said UK authorities had agreed to enforce a restraining order on assets and properties there that were allegedly linked to Daim's family and associates. MACC has also filed an application in the High Court to forfeit Menara Ilham, a 60-storey tower in Kuala Lumpur linked to Daim.

‘Not the MRSM DNA': Asyraf Wajdi denies bullying cover-up, mounts surprise visit to Besut school after seven students remanded

BESUT, June 29 – Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has denied any attempts by Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) to cover up bullying cases in its boarding schools. He said he was disheartened by the recent incident in Besut MRSM and stressed that bullying has no place in the schools, describing it as contrary to the values and character-building mission of the institution. 'There was no attempt by the principal, warden, or teachers to cover up the case. I have always issued a stern warning — bullying will not be tolerated under any circumstances,' he commented on Facebook. 'Should there be any effort to hide or sweep such incidents under the rug, those responsible, whether the principal, warden, or teachers, will face strict action.' Asyraf praised the prompt action of the on-duty warden in Besut MRSM, who intervened before the situation worsened and witnessed one student physically slapping another. The incident was swiftly referred to the MRSM Disciplinary Committee, which confirmed that physical bullying had taken place. He made his remarks after a surprise visit to Besut MRSM following reports of a recent bullying incident there. 'I am deeply disappointed and saddened to learn that such an incident has occurred at this institution. This is not part of our culture. This is not the MRSM DNA,' he said after addressing students at the school's surau. The police have since arrested six Form Three students and one Form Five student to assist in the investigation, with all of them remanded. Earlier, it was reported that police received a report from a male Form Two student at a residential school in Besut, claiming he was bullied by Form Three students last Tuesday. Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said initial investigations revealed that the senior students had ordered the victim to sit in a semi-squatting position with a slipper placed on his head for 40 minutes. The victim was also punched in the stomach and slapped in the face while at the school dormitory, he said.

Redrawing Sarawak for elections: Telang Usan rep says Baram could be split into two constituencies

MIRI, June 29 — Two new state constituencies (DUNs) will be needed to complement the proposed creation of two parliamentary seats in Baram, should a redelineation exercise take place, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau. He believes that the current Baram parliamentary constituency may be split into two, Upper Baram and Lower Baram. 'I don't know which part of Telang Usan will be carved out to form the new DUN, but perhaps we will find out during the special DUN sitting on July 7,' he said during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan Women's Wing Mother's Day and Father's Day dinner on Friday. Dennis added that the existing Telang Usan, Mulu and Marudi state constituencies might be affected by the creation of a new DUN within the Baram parliamentary area – if this were to happen. 'It could involve taking small parts from each: some from Mulu, some from Telang Usan, and some from Marudi. 'However, I don't know the exact location. I've never been involved in any meetings discussing the proposed new DUN,' he confirmed. The parliamentary constituency of Baram in Sarawak is the second largest by area in Malaysia, covering over 22,000sq km, slightly bigger than all of Perak. — Picture from Wikipedia/Derkommander0916 Dennis disclosed that a total of 17 new DUNs and nine new parliamentary seats had been proposed, noting that the matter would be debated before being submitted to the federal government. Moreover, Dennis also announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas would be invited to witness first-hand the condition of the logging road from Baram to the Bario Highlands via a convoy scheduled for next week. 'The three-day convoy, which I will also be joining, will depart from Miri this July 1. 'YB Datuk Amar Douglas and the rest of the entourage will travel upriver from Miri to Bario using the Baram road, to see with our own eyes the condition of our road. 'We are thankful to him for taking the time to spend three days with us on this journey,' he added. Dennis also hailed the dinner as a platform to strengthen the bond and camaraderie among PBB members in Telang Usan and fellow members of the component parties within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). 'To date, some 2,900 residents of Telang Usan are involved in the PBB, making it the largest political organisation in the area,' he noted. — The Borneo Post
