Anti-Emergency movement reaffirmed vitality of preserving India's democracy: PM

New Delhi, June 25 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated his commitment to strengthening the principles of Constitution and working together to realise the vision of a Viksit Bharat and said the anti-Emergency movement reaffirmed the vitality of preserving India's democratic framework.
In a series of tweets on the occasion marking fifty years since the imposition of the Emergency, the Prime Minister paid tributes to those Indians who defended democracy during ''one of the darkest chapters in the nation's history.''
Recalling the grave assault on constitutional values, he said June 25 is observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas — a day when fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished, and countless political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens imprisoned.
'No Indian will ever forget the manner in which the spirit of our Constitution was violated, the voice of Parliament muzzled and attempts were made to control the courts. The 42nd Amendment is a prime example of their shenanigans. The poor, marginalised and downtrodden were particularly targeted, including their dignity insulted.''
He called upon all those who remember the days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media to create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977.
'Today marks fifty years since one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history, the imposition of the Emergency. The people of India mark this day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. On this day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished and several political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens were jailed. It was as if the Congress Government in power at that time placed democracy under arrest! #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas'
'We salute every person who stood firm in the fight against the Emergency! These were the people from all over India, from all walks of life, from diverse ideologies who worked closely with each other with one aim: to protect India's democratic fabric and to preserve the ideals for which our freedom fighters devoted their lives. It was their collective struggle that ensured that the then Congress Government had to restore democracy and call for fresh elections, which they badly lost. #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas'
'We also reiterate our commitment to strengthening the principles in our Constitution and working together to realise our vision of a Viksit Bharat. May we scale new heights of progress and fulfil the dreams of the poor and downtrodden. #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas'
'When the Emergency was imposed, I was a young RSS Pracharak. The anti-Emergency movement was a learning experience for me. It reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework. At the same time, I got to learn so much from people across the political spectrum. I am glad that BlueKraft Digital Foundation has compiled some of those experiences in the form of a book, whose foreword has been penned by HD Deve Gowda, himself a stalwart of the anti-Emergency movement.
''The Emergency Diaries' chronicles my journey during the Emergency years. It brought back many memories from that time.
I call upon all those who remember those dark days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media. It will create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977.

Others too need alliance in UP, not just Cong: Raj Babbar

Not just the Congress but others too need an alliance in Uttar Pradesh to win the election, said former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar on Saturday. Former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar (HT File Photo) 'The alliance isn't just Congress's responsibility but others too have to be in it equally,' said Babbar. Raj Babbar came to preside over the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed district and city unit office-bearers of the Lucknow Congress. Babbar was UP Congress president in July 2016 and was replaced by Aj Kumar Lallu in October 2019 after he resigned. 'They should be in it (alliance) if they want to defeat the opponent you are contesting elections against, and you want to be the power to defeat them,' he said without taking the name of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 'The alliance will be made on ground according to the situation (in the future) and not on the basis of the past,' he said. 'At present we are focused upon organisational strengthening (sangathan srijan) and the process is being done in the most transparent manner,' he said, adding, 'There are no faces that you can say belong to a particular group. The entire process is under a coordination committee and the aim is to unite with like-minded people who are loyal with the party and connect with old associates also in a strong manner. Sangathan Srijan will enhance credibility among workers and encourage accountability.' Commenting upon the political implications of the caste census Babbar said that it is going to change the scenario. 'Naturally. You may do anything or not but people, once they know their status via census, will raise demands. Here, the lines by Lohia are most relevant: Jiski Jitni Hissedari Uski Utni Bhagidari (share on the basis of population). 'The caste census is certainly going to change the upcoming political scenario in the state as we will get a clear picture of the Hissedari, the demand for Bhagidari will also become clear. It will impact the elections,' said Babbar. Asked about the state government's move demanding shopkeepers on the Kanwar route to display name and identity, Babbar said, 'Why is this being demanded during the Kanwar Yatra. If necessary, it should be for all times. Kanwar Yatra has been taking place for years and all respect it.' Responding to the recent language row in Maharashtra, Babbar said, 'It is the government's job to handle such issues with maturity, not provoke the people.'
