'The Fantastic Four' makes us ask: Is it possible to give birth in space?
As Sue Storm, Vanessa Kirby gets to turn invisible and generate force fields to save the world from a cosmic giant.
But in Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," her most superheroic feat just might be giving birth in zero gravity.
Midway through the film, a very pregnant Sue ventures into space with her husband Reed (Pedro Pascal), brother Johnny (Joseph Quinn) and friend Ben (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to confront Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson) and his fierce mininon, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). As luck would have it, she goes into labor just as Galactus threatens to destroy the Earth if they don't hand over their then-unborn son, Franklin.
The superheroes run back to the ship, where Sue starts to have contractions. Between contractions, she uses her powers to make the vessel invisible to hide it from the villains. While Johnny is off trying to kill the Silver Surfer, Ben stands at the foot of her makeshift delivery table in order to catch the baby, and Reed holds his wife down so she has gravity to push.
Whoa, baby! The real story behind the adorable star of 'Fantastic Four'
While it's nowhere near as traumatic as Kirby's birth scene in her Oscar-nominated "Pieces of a Woman," it's still an incredibly intense moment as our heroes attempt to deliver the newborn in fraught circumstances. And according to experts, the movie's depiction of zero-gravity birth isn't far from the truth.
"Labor and delivery is not dependent on gravity, so births would be expected to occur without gravity," says Dr. Hugh Taylor, chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine.
Nonetheless, he adds, "there are many aspects to consider. Movement cannot be well controlled, and positioning may be difficult. Movement of the baby or maneuvering the baby to aid in delivery could set the mom moving rather than the baby. The mom would need to be held in place. Strapping down the mom and any healthcare providers would be necessary. Amniotic fluid, blood and other bodily fluids would fill the room rather than drain to the floor. On the brighter side, no one would ever have to worry about dropping the baby!"
Taylor is not aware of any humans or animals that have actually been born in space. But if it was to occur, he says the biggest issues would be cosmic radiation, as well as a lack of resources to care for the infant after it's born.
"The developing fetus is more sensitive to radiation and there may be a greater risk of pregnancy loss or problems in development," Taylor says. "There are not likely to be medical units to care for newborns in space. Without the advanced care such as NICUs, some babies would be in jeopardy. Normal development after birth is far more dependent on gravity; this would clearly affect the growth and development of the baby. I would be more worried about the baby than the delivery."
In short, what you see in "The Fantastic Four" is "feasible, and could occur," Taylor continues. "However, I would not recommend it. It would not be optimal for the baby's health."

'Fantastic Four' Star Julia Garner's Movie ‘Weapons' Rated 100 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes
The Silver Surfer, or in this case, Shalla-Bal, continues to make waves on the big screen. Julia Garner, who starred as the character in Fantastic Four: First Steps, has put on a follow-up performance that's earning early rave reviews in the upcoming film Weapons, which also features Josh Brolin and Benedict Wong. Julia Garner's New Movie, 'Weapons,' Debuts on August 8, but Early Reviews Are In While Garner's encore performance to her role as Shalla-Bal in Fantastic Four: First Steps doesn't officially hit theaters until August 8, the early viewings of the film have brought rave reviews from critics. Popular movie review site Rotten Tomatoes has 14 critic reviews currently for Weapons, and they've all given the thumbs up on the film. It currently boasts a 100 percent rating with just over one week until its official debut. Weapons is a thriller that features every child but one from the same class mysteriously vanishing on the same night at the same time. Garner, who also starred in the hit series Ozark, plays the role of Justine Gandy, an educator who finds herself at the center of the outrage, confusion and an intense media circus. Julia Garner Receives High Marks for Her Performance in 'Weapons' Along with the reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, other sites have also given their feedback on the film, particularly Garner's performance. Griffin Schiller of Awards Watch gave Weapons an 'A' rating and praised Garner in the process, stating that she gives a "remarkably honest and powerful performance." "Garner carries an inherent intensity balanced by an unassuming, delicate stature, and Cregger expertly utilizes this duality to craft a nuanced portrait of a flawed, passive person who recognizes the strength they have within themselves and channels that into being a force for good," Schiller wrote. "While initially her grief turned guilt causes her to turn to the bottle, that love becomes a motivator to do something, she owes it to her kids, as she takes the initiative looking in places the police won't and challenging the abnormalities that have been afforded one too many excuses. Justine's transformation is indicative of the kind of public servant she's been all along, however instead of remaining stifled by the broken system in place, she (rightfully) oversteps allowing Garner to turn in a remarkably honest and powerful performance." Reactions to 'Weapons' Earning High Marks on Rotten Tomatoes The early praise for Weapons was met with a mixture of reactions from moviegoers and fans. Some weren't surprised at all by the critics' reviews of Garner's new film, while others remain in "wait and see" mode, not yet fully on board. "We knew it was gonna be an all timer," replied one follower on X. "It is going to be best horror movie of this year after sinners or maybe better than sinners," read another bold comment. "Read the script last night and I could not stop reading. This movie is going to be incredible," chimed in another reader. "Pretty small sample, but hopefully a good early indicator!" read another response. While it's still early on, the coming days and the movie's first weekend in theaters will be telling, but Weapons is off to a great start.'Fantastic Four' Star Julia Garner's Movie 'Weapons' Rated 100 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 1, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Tom Holland Shares New Update on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Filming
For many Marvel fans, Thursday, July 31, was also known as Spider-Man day. The date is the exact one-year mark from the official release of the next addition to the series, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31, 2026. And with the calendar turning to August, it almost meant filming for the next Marvel film would get underway, which Tom Holland offered a small glimpse into. Tom Holland Reveals 'Strenuous' Work Ahead of Spider-Man's Day 1 of Filming While filming begins on Friday, August 1, Holland has been putting in work for Spider-Man: Brand New Day long before that. As he told GQ Magazine earlier in the week after wrapping up a "strenuous" day, "life couldn't be any better." 'I'm prepping for Spider-Man 4, so I've been at the studio doing stunts all day,' he says, sounding tired but content. 'Today was strenuous, but, you know, we're making great progress. Everything's shaping up. Yeah, life couldn't be any better, really.' An entire day of stunts sounds like a tall task, but it's unquestionably one that the Spider-Man star is used to by this point. But now, Holland will be in Glasgow, Scotland, where it sounds as though the film has overtaken a large portion of the city, to get filming underway. This includes the surprise addition to Marvel's next film, Jon Bernthal's The Punisher, a move that left many fans over the moon with excitement. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Reportedly Closing Nearly 60 Roads in Glasgow for Filming While there is no shortage of storylines ahead of the movie's filming, one interesting one comes from the significant impact it's set to have on Glasgow. As the film crew has been working to make the filming location look like a spitting image of New York City, The Glasgow Times reported that nearly 60 roads will be shut down in the city to allow for the drastic changes. The website states that filming is "reportedly set to last around two weeks" and cites that while traffic diversions are in place, the Glasgow City Council warned that bus and taxi lanes will be impacted. Considering the overwhelming number of street closures to make way for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to be filmed, don't be surprised if the 2026 film leaves you thinking that Spidey was in New York City all along. Along with Holland, the new Spider-Man film will feature Zendaya returning as MJ, Jacob Batalon back as Ned and Stranger Things star Sadie Sink joining Bernthal among the new cast Holland Shares New Update on 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Filming first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 1, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Tom Holland on James Bond Rumors: ‘It's the Pinnacle of Working in Our Industry'
While Tom Holland has plenty on his plate currently, the beloved Spider-Man actor has his fair share of experience with going from one high-profile movie role to the next. After wrapping filming on the 2026 film The Odyssey, he's now filming another highly anticipated movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And although Holland's current focus is on the latest addition to the Spider-Man series, he's been linked as an option to become the new James Bond. During a recent conversation on Scrambled with Gordon Ramsay, the 29-year-old addressed the topic. Tom Holland Calls Playing James Bond the 'Pinnacle' While Holland and Ramsay cooked up some (very delicious-looking) food, they discussed a broad range of topics, including the million-dollar question about Holland potentially playing the Bond role. "Listen, there's speculation at the minute, we'll keep it to a minimum for now," Holland said of playing James Bond. "We'll get there one day." After Ramsay stated that Holland would "love the opportunity, right?" The Spider-Man star was honest about how noteworthy and iconic it is. "I mean, every young British actor, it's the pinnacle of working in our industry," Holland said of the role. "I already consider myself to be the luckiest kid alive. I could never have dreamed to have the career that I've had. It's an interesting response from Holland, and one that highlights just how much playing the role of James Bond could mean to the popular actor. Now, whether that leads to him ultimately making the jump into playing 007 remains to be seen, but Holland certainly didn't squash the speculation. Holland also has a noteworthy link to the upcoming James Bond film, as Variety detailed that the movie is being co-produced by Amy Pascal, with whom he works on Spider-Man. Tom Holland Among Interesting List of Names Linked to Next James Bond Movie The question of who will play the next James Bond has been a significant topic of conversation in recent years. The movie is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. However, little has been revealed about who will take on the task of becoming the next 007. As GQ Magazine cited, a few of the names linked previously include Idris Elba, James Norton, Theo James, Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Interestingly, Taylor-Johnson was reportedly offered the role in 2024, according to The Sun, but nothing has come to fruition on that front. However, of all the names mentioned above, only Dickinson is close to Holland in age (both are 29). If the rumblings about the next potential James Bond being a younger actor are true, that could heavily play in favor of either Holland or Dickinson. Until a new update is provided, though, it'll remain under heavy speculation about who the frontrunner to become the next James Bond is. From the sound of it, though, Holland's interest seems apparent, at the very Holland on James Bond Rumors: 'It's the Pinnacle of Working in Our Industry' first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 1, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
