CHATEAUROUX, France (Reuters) -The Tour de France riders face a stern test as the 112th edition of the race enters the Massif Central for the 10th stage on Monday, with 4,450 metres of climbing awaiting them.
Following a tough and hectic opening week, with some difficult stages, the peloton will ride 165.3km between Ennezat and Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy, tackling eight categorised climbs including the uphill finish.
"All day long, we'll be going up and down climbs all the time," race director Thierry Gouvenou said. "You'll need to be in top shape if you hope to shine on this kind of course.
"The riders in the general classification will be aiming to win the stage and make up time for the final overall classification."
Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar leads the general classification by 54 seconds ahead of Belgium's Remco Evenepoel while two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard sits fourth, trailing the yellow jersey by one minute and 17 seconds.
"A lot of things can happen," defending champion Pogacar told a press conference on Sunday when asked about the 10th stage. "All the day up and down. I think there will be some attacks from GC (general classification) riders."
His team principal Mauro Gianetti said Monday's stage was a key moment in the Tour.
"It's very important because it's a stage with about 4,500 metres of climbing," Gianetti told Reuters. "There will be a lot of battles, a lot of attacks. It's going to be a very intense day."
Pogacar will miss his best domestique in the mountains as Portugal's Joao Almeida withdrew on Sunday after crashing on Friday.
Retired French rider Pierre Rolland, who won two Tour de France stages, said Monday could be a tougher day than the high-mountain stages starting on Thursday.
"It's going to be a very, very difficult stage. There's no respite. It's almost harder than a high-mountain stage because the course is so hilly," he told Reuters.
"There won't be a gap of minutes between the favourites but there may be a few seconds."
Monday's stage should give some insight into Vingegaard's shape. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider suffered a blow during the stage-five time trial, losing more than a minute on Pogacar but has managed to follow the world champion's wheel in every punchy finish.
After the stage comes the first rest day of the Tour, on Tuesday.

Soccer-Cascarino powers France into last eight with 5-2 win over Netherlands

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - Netherlands v France - St. Jakob-Park, Basel, Switzerland - July 13, 2025 Netherlands' Dominique Janssen in action with France's Delphine Cascarino REUTERS/Denis Balibouse BASEL (Reuters) -An electrifying second-half performance from Delphine Cascarino fired France to a 5-2 win over the Netherlands on Sunday that secured victory in Group D at the Women's Euros and set up a quarter-final meeting with Germany in Basel on July 19. France finished the group with nine points from their three games, three ahead of England, who join them in the knockout stage for a quarter-final meeting with Sweden in Zurich on July 17 following a 6-1 win over Wales. The Dutch, champions in 2017, had their moments, but never came close to the three-goal victory they would have needed to progress as a second-half defensive collapse cost them dearly. Following a frenetic opening, Marie-Antoinette Katoto fluffed her lines in the 21st minute, spooning a first-time shot from a good position over the bar after a brilliant surging run by Oriane Jean-Francois. Katoto made amends a minute later by scrambling down the left and pulling the ball back on the edge of the box to Sandie Toletti, and she sent a bouncing drive into the bottom corner to open the scoring. The lead didn't last long, Victoria Pelova curling a brilliant equaliser after French goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin turned a shot from Chasity Grant into her path. The Dutch went ahead in the 41st minute when French defender Selma Bacha's attempted clearance only resulted in her turning the ball into her own net to send her side in 2-1 down at the break. With the French lying in second place in the group at that point, Cascarino took over, teeing up Katoto for the equaliser in the 61st minute before conjuring a moment of magic, slashing through the middle and scoring with an unstoppable shot in the 64th minute. Shescored again three minutes later as a Katoto shot that hit both posts fell into her path to drill into the net and Sakina Karchaoui scored a late penalty to secure the 5-2 win and send the French through as group winners. France coach Laurent Bonadei hailed the character of his players following their comeback win. "A match is made up of two halves. We started well, then we got a bit scared," he told French TV. "At halftime, the players remobilized, they had a bit more bite. We had a great second half with some nice goals, it's the football we love, focused on attack." Cole Palmer Stars as Chelsea Beat PSG 3-0 in Club World Cup

COLE PALMER produced a scintillating first-half masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris St Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided Club World Cup final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The English attacking midfielder scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked. After a stunning season, PSG were heavy favourites, while Chelsea arrived in the U.S. after winning Europe's third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish. Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a 'game of chess' against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but what transpired was a quick checkmate for the Italian who gave a tactical masterclass. Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto. While his initial effort was blocked by Mendes, Gusto collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post. Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th-minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner. Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG's misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG's players grew in frustration as the match progressed. The encounter turned ill-tempered at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea's players went to celebrate with their fans. 'Great feeling' 'It's a great feeling. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it's good,' Palmer said. 'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.' Maresca's team employed a relentless high press and emulated the tactics used by Brazilian outfit Botafogo, who had beaten PSG 1-0 in the group stage and were the only team to score against Luis Enrique's side in the previous eight games. Their press caused PSG all sorts of trouble and when Maresca's side couldn't regain possession, they sat deep, frustrating the European champions, who were unable to play their usual game. The direct and pacey football we had become used to seeing from PSG was Chelsea's game on Sunday, with Palmer, Gusto and Joao Pedro picking apart the PSG defence, especially on the left side. Other than an early golden opportunity for PSG's Desire Doue that was wasted, the first half was all Chelsea's and, after they opened their three-goal lead, the French side could never recover. 'Chelsea were more effective than us, they worked well on our slight weakness,' PSG captain Marquinhos said. 'Tactically, they caused us problems in the first half and we took a while to react. These are things we'll need to change going forward. I think all teams will now study us closely to see what we do well and what we do badly. It's up to us now to always be at the top of our game.'- REUTERS
