Pakistani films Nayab and Deemak win top honors at SCO Film Festival in China

The festival showcased 27 films from SCO member states, including China, Russia, Pakistan, India, and Central Asian countries. Organized to foster regional cinematic exchange, the event featured screenings, industry forums, a film technology expo, and a gala concert, with awards presented in ten categories.
The SCO Film Festival first launched in 2018 and is a cultural initiative of the multilateral bloc to promote cooperation in cinema and the creative industries among member countries.
'Pakistani film Nayab and Deemak received prestigious 'Jury Special Award' and 'Best Editing Award' respectively at the colorful concluding ceremony of SCO film festival held at Chongqing, China,' Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Nayab, released in 2024, is a sports-drama centered on a young woman from Karachi, played by Yumna Zaidi, who aspires to become a professional cricketer despite intense family and societal opposition. The cast includes Fawad Khan, Javed Sheikh, and Adnan Siddiqui.
The film has previously won multiple awards, including Best Foreign Film and Best First-Time Filmmaker (Feature) at the World Film Festival in Cannes, and a Special Jury Diploma at the 30th Minsk International Film Festival.
'The cinema was packed, and what truly moved me was how deeply they engaged with the film,' Nayab's director Umair Nasir Ali told APP after the film's screen at the SCO festival. 'They picked up on the layers, the emotional arcs and asked thoughtful, relevant questions that showed how closely they had followed the story.'
Deemak is a psychological horror film directed by Rafay Akbar Rashdi and starring Soniya Hussyn, Faysal Quraishi, Samina Peerzada, and Bushra Ansari.
Set in an aging home haunted by unexplained phenomena, the film explores family tensions and mental trauma. It became Pakistan's highest-grossing horror film when it released earlier this year, earning over Rs60 million [$211,173] in its opening week.
Pakistan's film industry has seen a steady resurgence in recent years, with a new generation of filmmakers experimenting with genres from sports dramas to horror and social realism.
Joyland (2022) became the first Pakistani feature to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section, and was later selected as Pakistan's official entry to the Oscars. The country has also received two Academy Award wins in the documentary short category by filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Meanwhile, The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022) set new box office records, becoming Pakistan's highest-grossing film to date and finding global audiences with its big-budget, Punjabi-language action storytelling.

KARACHI: Pakistani actress and model Humaira Asghar Ali is believed to have died at least nine months ago in October 2024 based on digital and forensic evidence, investigators told Arab News on Thursday, after her decomposed body was discovered this week in her Karachi apartment. Ali's remains were found at a flat in the city's Ittehad Commercial area when a court bailiff arrived to vacate the rented property on Tuesday, following a complaint by the landlord. Police said the bailiff broke open the door and found the deceased inside. Initially, Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, who conducted the post-mortem, said the body's 'very advanced stage of decomposition' suggested death had occurred around a month prior. However, police investigations into Ali's phone records, her last social media activity and interviews with neighbors found no indication that she had been alive after October 2024, Arab News has found. Her last Facebook post was on September 11, 2024 and last Instagram post on September 30, 2024. Neighbors interviewed by police and reporters said they had not seen her since Sept-Oct last year. Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza confirmed that Ali's phone was last active in October 2024, with the final recorded call placed that month. 'As per Call Detail Record (CDR) the last call was made in October 2024,' Raza told Arab News, without offering further details. Two officials with direct knowledge of the case, who declined to be named, said the estimated time of death was around October 2024. 'Humaira's body is likely nine months old,' the first official said on condition of anonymity. 'She probably died between paying her last utility bills and when her electricity was disconnected in October 2024, probably due to non-payment of the bill.' A second official who also requested anonymity said expired food items and rusted containers in the kitchen supported that timeline. 'The jars had rusted, and food had expired six months ago,' the official said. There was only one other apartment on the same floor, which was vacant at the time, possibly delaying detection, investigators said. 'The occupants of that apartment told us they returned in February, and by then the smell had faded. After ten to fifteen days, the odour starts to decrease. The balcony door had also been left open,' the second official added. Water pipes in the home were dry and rusted and no alternative power source was found. 'There were no candles either,' the official said. Police surgeon Syed, who conducted the autopsy on Tuesday, returned to the apartment on Wednesday with senior officers. 'We have collected multiple surface samples from the scene, which have been sent to the laboratory,' she said, declining to provide further comment. Police said Ali's family had declined to claim the body. It is unclear whether she was estranged from her relatives or what the exact reason was that they had refused to receive her remains. Ali rose to fame after winning Veet Miss Super Model in 2014 and appearing in reality show Tamasha Ghar in 2022. She has featured in television dramas such as Just Married, Ehsaan Faramosh, Guru, and Chal Dil Mere. In cinema, she appeared in the 2015 action-thriller Jalaibee and later in Love Vaccine in 2021.

Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy launches film project to spotlight Pakistan's unsung changemakers
ISLAMABAD: Two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on Wednesday launched a new initiative through her production house, SOC Films, to highlight the work done by grassroots projects and nonprofit organizations in Pakistan through storytelling. The campaign, titled Frame It Forward, will select one organization to receive a professionally produced short film at no cost. The initiative aims to raise the visibility of local efforts across a wide range of issues, from education and gender equality to wildlife conservation, refugee assistance and community health. 'Too often, vital work being done in the heart of our communities goes unseen simply because it isn't being told,' Obaid-Chinoy, the founder and CEO of SOC Films, said in a statement. 'Frame It Forward is our commitment to community – using the power of film to help elevate voices that deserve to be heard.' The short film will be publicly released on August 14, Pakistan's Independence Day, and will be developed in close collaboration with the selected initiative. The deadline for applications is July 25. Nonprofits and grassroots groups across Pakistan are encouraged to apply through an open call. SOC Films said the campaign was rooted in the belief that storytelling is a powerful tool for driving social change, fostering empathy and encouraging civic engagement. 'This storytelling campaign is dedicated to highlighting the impactful, yet often overlooked, work done by grassroots projects and nonprofit organizations in Pakistan,' the statement said. Internationally, storytelling has emerged as a key tool for nonprofit visibility, especially in the Global South where many groups struggle to reach wider audiences or fund communications efforts. Pakistan actress Humaira Asghar Ali found dead at Karachi home — police
KARACHI: Humaira Asghar Ali, a Pakistani actor and model, was found dead at an apartment in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, police said late Tuesday. Ali's body was discovered when a court bailiff arrived at the rented apartment to get it vacated on court orders on a complaint filed by the landlord, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mehroz Ali. 'The landlord had filed a court case to have the premises vacated. Today, when the bailiff arrived with a court-issued break-and-enter order and forced open the door, the woman's body was found inside,' SSP Ali told Arab News. 'The woman has been identified as Humaira Asghar Ali who was a TV actress. It has been learned that she was originally from Lahore.' The deceased actor was best known for her appearances on ARY's reality TV show 'Tamasha' as well as a 2015 action thriller, 'Jalaibee.' Following post-mortem, Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed said, the deceased's body was in a 'very advanced stage of decomposition,' which suggested that she died around a month ago. 'We have collected all relevant samples for analysis. Cause of death reserved,' Syed said. Ali's death comes just weeks after renowned actress Ayesha Khan was found dead in her apartment in Karachi's Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, according to police. Her neighbors reported a foul smell emitting out of her apartment that led to the discovery of the 84-year-old's body.
