Villagers protest proposed land acquisition for urban estates in Ludhiana.
More than 1,200 villagers and farmer unionists gathered at a Ferozepur Road marriage palace on Wednesday, demanding that chief minister Bhagwant Mann clarify the govt's intentions publicly. The proposed land pooling scheme, involving the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada) reportedly, has triggered fears of mass displacement and economic ruin among farmers.
Jagroop Singh of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakonda) said: "The govt is silent, and if this is untrue, the CM must say so."
He warned the farmers that nearly 20,000 families could be displaced and forced to accept just an acre in return for five, without proper compensation. Villagers, including those from Hassanpur and Mullanpur, expressed outrage and confusion over the alleged plan, with concerns it could take over a decade to implement, leaving them in limbo.
"Where are these farmers supposed to go in the meantime?" asked Amarjeet Singh Gill, a local farmer.

"The chief minister has announced that these flats will now be handed over to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban. DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated Rs 732 crore for housing, which remained unutilised and was to be returned to the Centre. Central govt has now approved their use for the renovation of these dilapidated flats," said an official. Gupta accused the previous govts of treating slum dwellers as a vote bank. "On one hand, these agencies are going to the courts against poor people; on the other hand, they are not even providing them with any alternative places to live," he claimed.

Himanta: Non-tribals on forest land will be evicted — period
1 2 Guwahati: Amid Assam's most aggressive land reclamation drive to date, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has ordered a sweeping crackdown on forest encroachments across all districts of the state. He said here on Friday that all district commissioners have been tasked with conducting immediate surveys and initiating evictions, sparing only those protected under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006). The directive is clear—enforce the law and reclaim the land. "Tribal communities who lived in forests before 2005 are protected under law. Everyone else will be evicted, period," Sarma said here on Friday, adding that the scale of encroachment is staggering. "Even at one eviction per month, it will take a decade to reclaim the land," he added. Since May 2021, when Sarma's government came to power, over 1.19 lakh bighas (approximately 160 sq km) of land has been cleared, evicting nearly 50,000 people.
