One last selfie: Udaipur doctor family's final moments before Air India crash in Ahmedabad

Time of India13-06-2025
NEW DELHI: Amid the smouldering debris of the
Air India crash
in Ahmedabad lies a phone that may never be recovered — but the last photo it captured endures.
It shows a smiling family from Rajasthan, ready to embark on a new chapter in London.
That moment of joy has now become a symbol of the devastating tragedy that claimed 265 lives.
For Dr Komi Vyas, a well-regarded physician at Udaipur's Pacific Medical College and Hospital, the journey marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
She had recently resigned from her job to join her husband, Dr Prateek Joshi, who had been living and working in London for over three years.
Along with their three children — daughter Miraya and twin boys Pradyut and Nakul — the family was finally set to reunite overseas after years of planning.
The family from Banswara had long dreamt of building a life together in the UK.
But just minutes after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday, the flight to London Gatwick ended in a fiery crash, bringing their dreams to a horrifying end.
Colleagues at Pacific Hospital recalled how Komi had excitedly shared her plans just two days before the flight.
'She spoke with so much hope and happiness,' said hospital chairman Ashish Agarwal.

In Udaipur, where the children studied, the loss sent shockwaves through the medical and academic communities alike.
Lokesh Shukla, a close friend and neighbour in Banswara, said Prateek had returned to India a month ago to help with preparations.
'They were full of excitement — shopping for clothes, school supplies, even home décor — everything for their new life,' he said.
Back in Banswara's Mohan Colony, opposite the district collector's residence, the family's home turned into a centre of mourning.
Neighbours and friends poured in, many inconsolable. Shops in the locality downed shutters in a gesture of solidarity.
Dr Prateek's father, JP Joshi, runs a diagnostic centre in Udaipur, while his mother, Dr Anita Joshi, is also from the medical field.
The family was known not only for their professional success but for their kindness and humility. Relatives such as Hemant and Madhukar Joshi remained too distraught to speak.
'They were the kind of family everyone admired — grounded, loving, and generous,' said one neighbour.

Pilots and airhostesses cannot do these things in flight, they are banned from....

Airplane cockpit- Representational image Can you guess the list of things which are not allowed for pilots and cabin crew members to posses in the cabin of a airplane? Would you be surprised if we tell you that pilots are allowed to wear perfumes in the cockpit of the plane before taking the breath analyser test. Yes, as per the rules of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), not only perfumes but hand sanitizers, mouthwash, or even tooth gel are also not allowed to be used. Here are all the details you need to know about the list of things that are not allowed to be carried by the pilots and cabin crew members during a flight. What are list of items not allowed in flight? As per the guidelines of DGCA, alcohol-based products (sanitisers, mouthwash, perfumes) contain ethyl alcohol, and this is the reason why they are not allowed to be carried by the crew members and pilot. Following the rules, all crew members are required to go through the breathalyzer test, which is done through a device so sensitive that it can detect 0.0001 per cent of alcohol. DGCA directs airlines to check fuel switches of Boeing planes after Air India crash report In another significant update impacting the security of planes in India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has instructed airlines to carry out checks on the locking mechanism of fuel control switches of Boeing aircraft in their fleets. Notably, the move comes in the wake of the preliminary investigation report into last month's tragic Air India Boeing Dreamliner crash at Ahmedabad, in which 260 people were killed. Air Accidents Investigation Bureau reveals preliminary report on Air India crash One of the key findings of the Air Accidents Investigation Bureau's preliminary report on the crash was that the twin engines of the ill-fated Boeing plane shut down seconds after take-off as the fuel supply was cut off. The report raised fresh concerns over the aircraft's engine fuel cutoff switches, as they transitioned from 'Run' to 'Cutoff' just 3 seconds after take-off. (With inputs from agencies)

Bihar Regiment marks 44th foundation day of its 21st battalion

1 2 3 Patna: Bihar Regiment Centre (BRC) marked the 44th foundation day of its 21st battalion at a function held on its ground in Danapur cantonment near Patna on Sunday. The 21st battalion of the Bihar Regiment was raised on July 20, 1981, under Lt Col. Mohd Mansoor Mallick. From its inception, the battalion bore the motto 'karam hi dharma hai' (duty is our religion), a creed it upheld across decades of challenging service, said BRC commandant Brig Kamal Deep Jaspal. The foundation day event began with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the BRC war memorial by Brigadier Jaspal. Several retired officers and serving soldiers of the battalion had gathered to pay rich tributes to the martyrs. Brig Jaspal, while addressing the gathering, recalling the battalion's distinguished service record. "From the cold heights of Himachal to the hostile terrains of Uri, the 21st battalion has carried the flag of the Bihar Regiment high. Their resilience, valour and loyalty to the nation are an inspiration to every soldier," he said. The journey of the 21st battalion has been storied since its early years — from 1982 to 1985, it was in the mountainous terrains of Himachal Pradesh, honing skills and building camaraderie that would become the bedrock of its operational success. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo In 1990 during the height of insurgency in the northern theatre, the battalion was deployed for Operation Bajrang, a mission that required not just firepower but strategic restraint and deep engagement with local population. Their success earned widespread acclaim, the BRC commandant said. In addition the battalion's most intense years came during Operation Rakshak in Uri from 1999 to 2003, a volatile period marked by frequent encounters, infiltration attempts and extreme weather conditions. Yet the bravehearts of the 21st battalion never faltered, and neutralised numerous threats working closely with intelligence units to dismantle insurgent networks, the BRC officer said, adding in Sept 2014 they were once again called during Operation Alert, a high-stakes mission involving counter-insurgency and civil assistance during flood and internal disturbances.
