Record RM136 million for students: Chief Minister

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government continues to strengthen its commitment to higher education through various targeted initiatives, including the largest allocation to date — RM136 million — for the Sabah State Government Scholarships (BKNS) this year. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the significant increase from RM50 million in 2020 reflects the government's determination to ensure access to higher education is available to all Sabahans, regardless of their socio-economic background.

'We do not want Sabah's youth to be left behind in education simply due to financial constraints,' he said during presentation ceremony for Sabah-Based Higher Education Students Aid Contribution (Sentosa) at the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), on Sunday. His speech was delivered by State Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Datuk Mohd Arif. Hajiji said 4,170 students would benefit from BKNS sponsorships this year, in line with the goals of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development policy to strengthen the education sector as a pillar of the state's progress. Hajiji who is also UMS Pro-Chancellor said that this year alone, the State Government has allocated RM77.5 million to implement 13 education aid initiatives, benefiting schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), students from institutions of higher learning, as well as Sabah student associations both locally and abroad. He added that key initiatives include the one-off IPT Registration Cash Aid (BUDI), the Computer Assistance Program (BAIK), the Sabah Malaysian Student Secretariat (SEMESTA), and the Sabah Student Flight Ticket Assistance (GRS-SUBFLY). He said Yayasan Sabah has also played a significant role in educational development, allocating RM67.17 million last year, which benefited 3,234 students. Through the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) RM92.4 million was disbursed over the past five years via the Zakat and Fitrah Division, helping more than 48,000 students across the State. To ensure continued education support, the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), introduced in June 2022, has benefited nearly 10,104 recipients with a total expenditure of RM15.8 million to date. He said the Sentosa assistance program, launched in March at the Gaya Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), involves a RM6 million allocation and targets approximately 20,000 Bumiputera Sabah students within the State. 'This assistance aims to ease students' financial burden, especially for basic necessities or returning home. It also reflects the government's strong commitment to ensuring no student is left behind in their educational journey,' he said. At the event, Hajiji handed out a one-time cash aid of RM300 per student under the Sentosa program to over 600 students, including 319 from UMS and 323 from Mahsa College Sabah, who had not previously received the aid. Hajiji KOTA KINABALU (July 22): The Sabah Energy Council (MTS) has approved, in principle, a total of 723 megawatts (MW) in new power generation projects to meet the state's medium-term electricity needs. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the approvals covered 360MW from gas-fired plants in Kimanis and Tawau, along with 363MW from renewable sources, including hydro and wind. These projects have received conditional technical and commercial clearance. 'All decisions must be made with balance and prudence, taking into account the state's economic growth, industrial demands and the public's capacity to bear energy costs,' he said after chairing the MTS meeting here on Tuesday. Hajiji said MTS continues to serve as the state's highest platform for aligning energy policy and noted that several fast-track projects approved last year are already delivering results. Sabah's generation reserve margin has also risen from 10 per cent in January 2023, before the Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) assumed regulatory authority, to 17 per cent currently, with a target of 30 per cent by year-end. Hajiji added that these fast-track efforts have helped reduce the state's System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), from 363 minutes in the first half of 2023 to 215 minutes in the same period this year, and further down to 162 minutes in the latest reporting period. Hajiji also called for greater empowerment of state-linked companies (GLCs) to play a mor significant role in Sabah's energy landscape.

PGRS meet to chart strategy ahead of polls

Kota Kinabalu: The Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) General Assembly, scheduled for this weekend, will serve as a key platform for charting its strategy ahead of the impending 17th State Election (PRN17). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also PGRS President, said the three-day meeting is in accordance with the party's constitution and comes at a crucial time as the State prepares for polls. 'It is a constitutional requirement but particularly important as we are heading into a state election that could be held any time after the assembly. So, let's wait and see,' he told a press conference. Asked about the key highlights of the convention, Hajiji, who is also the Chairman of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS,) said he would deliver important announcements and messages during the assembly. On political cooperation, Hajiji confirmed that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) had held several discussions with Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH Chairman. 'Yes, we've had several discussions, including with the Prime Minister. I believe we will come to a final decision. We will announce it when the time is right. 'There will definitely be formal discussions. We want to continue the cooperation between GRS and PH, the current State Government,' he added. Hajiji emphasised that GRS would contest the majority of seats in the coming election, while considering local aspirations in determining candidate placements and seat allocations. 'Of course (GRS will contest the majority). But we also want to listen to local aspirations. We will make the best decision for Sabah because political stability is crucial. 'It's not just about winning the election, but also about ensuring post-election political stability.
