Andre Fabre looking forward to Eclipse with in-form Sosie
Andre Fabre is looking forward to bringing Sosie to England for what should be a thrilling clash of the generations in the Coral-Eclipse.
The Sandown highlight is traditionally the first time the Classic generation meet with their elders and this year is no different.
Currently the favourite is John and Thady Gosden's hugely impressive Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Ombudsman, ahead of Sosie, the winner of three Group Ones and fourth in last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Representing the Classic form this season is Aidan O'Brien's Camille Pissarro, winner of the French Derby.
"Sosie is still on target for the Eclipse, I'm very happy with him," said Fabre.
"He's shown good form this season and the owners are keen to run him."
Looking at the likely opposition, Fabre said: "I was very impressed with Ombudsman, he looks a very nice colt and did it well.
"It could be a small field, we'll see. The Prix du Jockey Club winner could run too and he looks a nice horse.
"It should be a good race, that is what you expect, proper competition."
Another top-class middle-distance performer who remains in contention for the Eclipse is the Owen Burrows-trained Anmaat, winner of last season's Champion Stakes and best of the rest behind Ombudsman at the Royal meeting last week.
Angus Gold, racing manager for owners Shadwell, said: "We were delighted with Anmaat's run in the Prince of Wales's, he travelled very well again, came to win his race and was beaten by what looked an outstanding horse to me who quickened better than him.
"I don't think we have any excuses. You could say he'd prefer easier ground, but that's not the reason he got beaten – he got beaten because a better horse beat him.
"I spoke to Owen yesterday and he said the horse seems in good shape. The Eclipse certainly comes soon enough for a horse we know can handle soft ground better than some, so we don't want to put him through the mill right through the summer in every top Group One and find we don't have a horse left in the autumn.
"We'll monitor him and the ground and the race. The early signs are good that he's come out of it OK, but he is a seven-year-old and we've got to do the right thing by him."

Ohio heat a concern for both Ireland and USA
Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward says the expected heat in Cincinatti, Ohio on Sunday will be a major concern for her and USA counterpart Emma Hayes' teams as they prepare to face off again in a second friendly international. The Girls in Green lost 4-0 to the world number one side in Denver, Colorado in the first friendly on Thursday where the heat and altitude proved a major challenge. Temperatues are expected to be at least in the high 20s Celsius on Sunday in Cincinatti for the second encounter (8pm kick off Irish time, live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player) which will again make things difficult for Ireland. "If I sat here and said I wasn't concerned, I'd be lying. I'm obviously very concerned, I think, not just myself, but I think Emma (Hayes) is as well," Ward told RTÉ soccer correspondent Tony O'Donoghue. "We both understand that this is a difficult time to play. It's a difficult heat to play in. I think you've seen in the Champions Club World Cup even that you know Atletico players have come out, Trent (Alexander-Arnold) has come out, everyone's come out talking about how tough it can be and we have to really, really be careful and look after players. "We have to manage it, we have to make sure there are water breaks, we have to do the best we can to look after players because, look, I'm walking around and we're setting up and you can feel it here, right? "Even in the shade, its's unbearable. So me being me on players first, and we have to do everything we possibly can to make sure they're hydrated. Do we look after them and if that means the good old, send the goalkeeper down just to breathe and get them some water? We absolutely will." Ward had already indicated that Denise O'Sullivan and Megan Campbell would unlikely to be fit for the Cincinatti leg of the friendly double-header, having missed the first game, and the manager said Shamrock Rovers' veteran midfielder Ruesha Littlejohn had also emerged as a doubt. "Ruesha, after the other night, is a huge doubt and probably unlikely to play too many minutes," said Ward. "Erin Healy we're assessing because she had limited minutes the other night, but should be okay for some minutes and then there are a few others that (we) will just have to really carefully manage." As for the benefits of the two games against the USA - with October's Nations League play-off tie versus Belgium to come in October as a consideration - Ward said the squad and coaching staff had plenty of takeaways to learn from. "I think the trip's been so valuable. It really has," she said. "From a culture point of view, from a learning point of view, you know, really deep diving into it, adding the layers what we want to do for October. "That's been really important. I think the first game added a lot of value. Look, I'm not sure about tomorrow, obviously, because it's a completely different kettle of fish. I'll have to answer you that after the game. My priority is getting the players through safely."

Davy Burke steps down as Roscommon manager
Davy Burke has opted to vacate the Roscommon hot seat after the conclusion of his three-year term as manager of the county's senior inter-county footballers. Burke, who became the youngest inter-county manager in history when he took the reigns at Wicklow as a 31-year-old in 2019, succeeded Anthony Cunningham as Rossies boss in October 2022. Confey native Burke also led his native Kildare to All-Ireland Under-20 glory in 2018. Roscommon bowed out of last year's All-Ireland at the quarter-final stage to eventual champions Armagh and, after sealing promotion from Division 2 in the league, failed to reach the All-Ireland series this year. In a statement released via Roscommon GAA, Burke said: After careful consideration, I have decided to step down as Roscommon senior football manager, bringing an end to my three-year term. "I would like to thank the Roscommon County Board, in particular county chairperson Brian Carroll for his unwavering support and loyalty through the highs and lows over the last three years. I appreciated it more than you will know." Brian Carroll said of the departing Burke: "I have witnessed first hand the effort, dedication and commitment Davy has put in since his appointment in October 2022. "I want to thank Davy most sincerely for everything he has done for Roscommon GAA. "We have had highs and lows over the three years but Davy's ambitions and goals for our players, supporters and our county was always to be the very best we could possibly be." Charlie Johnston lets Lazy Griff take his chance in Irish Derby
Charlie Johnston is "more than happy" to let Lazy Griff take on Lambourn for a third time in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday. A Group Three winner in France at the end of his juvenile campaign, Lazy Griff made his return to action in last month's Chester Vase and emerged with plenty of credit in finishing second to Lambourn, earning him a shot at the Betfred Derby at Epsom. Johnston's charge was a widely unconsidered 50-1 shot for the premier Classic, but belied those odds with an excellent effort to again finish best of the rest behind Aidan O'Brien's front-running colt and round three will take place at the Curragh this weekend. "It wasn't an easy decision to come to, perhaps the Grand Prix de Paris might have been an easier challenge and we certainly wouldn't have been taking on a horse that's already beaten us twice, but the lure of the Irish Derby was too strong to turn down," said Johnston. "We're under no illusions about the task in hand because it is two-nil to Lambourn, but having said that we weren't afraid to have another go at him. "It'll be interesting to see how the race pans out. You can't take anything away from Lambourn and what he did at Epsom at all, but at the same time he was given a very good front-running ride and we all maybe gave him a little bit too much rope on the front end. "Sunday is going to be a different day on a different track with a different field and we're more than happy to have another go and see what we can do to reverse the form." He added: "Obviously it's a shame as Goliath and Lazy Griff are probably Christophe's two marquee horses for the season at the moment and it's sod's law that they're both running on the same day. "It's a shame for him, but we're able to bring William in who is obviously top-class but will also be very confident at the moment after a great Royal Ascot, it's a great replacement to call upon." Lazy Griff and Lambourn feature in a 10-strong field following Friday's declaration stage, with Aidan O'Brien also saddling Lingfield Derby Trial winner Puppet Master and Gallinule Stakes scorer Thrice, as well as Serious Contender and Shackleton, both of whom performed well in defeat at Royal Ascot. His son Joseph runs Derby third Tennessee Stud, while Green Impact is a fascinating contender for Jessica Harrington on what will be his first attempt at a mile and a half. Ralph Beckett's Dante winner Pride Of Arras bids to bounce back from Epsom disappointment, with his stablemate Sir Dinadan completing the line-up.
