Anti-drug campaign launched in Irinjalakuda
'There is an urgent need to address the rising trend of violence and destructive behaviour among young people,' Dr. Bindu said. 'This campaign integrates creative, community-driven programmes that can reach the grassroots, encouraging youth to embrace the sweetness of life and view it with positivity and purpose.'
The campaign includes the formation of vigilance committees at every level, strengthening of counselling services, and organising awareness drives in local bodies, industries, and institutions. The Minister called on the support of NSS volunteers, Kudumbashree members, and other grassroots forces to lead the anti-drug movement.
She also directed all educational institutions in the Irinjalakuda constituency to form vigilance committees by June 26, alongside conducting competitions and awareness activities.
The launch event featured a pledge against drug abuse, lighting of a unity lamp, anti-drug songs, and thematic dance performances. The event was presided over by Irinjalakuda Municipal chairperson Marykutty Joy.

21 destitute patients shifted from MCH to Gandhi Bhavan shelter
T'puram: In a major rehabilitation initiative, 21 destitute and abandoned patients who were stranded for months at Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital were shifted to Gandhi Bhavan shelter in Pathanapuram under the leadership of social justice minister R Bindu. The relocation, carried out under the social justice department's Vayoraksha (Elderly Protection) scheme, involved the coordinated use of multiple ambulances. Among those relocated were 17 men and 4 women, most of whom are bedridden. Several of them are non-Keralites and many do not even remember their own names or native places. Moved by the emotional farewell, hospital staff who cared for them for months gathered with teary eyes as the patients thanked them for the food, clothes and shelter provided when even their families abandoned them. The minister commended the compassionate work of the hospital staff during the send-off. The social justice department is preparing to launch a new scheme titled Vayosanthwanam, aimed at rehabilitating elderly, bedridden individuals without caretakers, in collaboration with experienced voluntary organizations. In recent years, many similar cases were taken in by institutions under Orphanage Control Board (OCB), with Gandhi Bhavan having accommodated the most. Gandhi Bhavan secretary Punalur Somarajan confirmed that a dedicated ward and medical team are now in place to provide the best possible care for the relocated residents.

Services under ‘Snehagramam' project for endosulfan victims enter second phase
The Social Justice department's flagship rehabilitation initiative for endosulfan victims, 'Saha Jeevanam Snehagramam', is gaining momentum with the second phase currently under way. The project aims to bring all essential services, treatment, therapy, accommodation, employment, and skill training under one roof for the comprehensive development of the victims. Snehagramam is being developed on 25 acres provided by the Planatation Corporation as compensation in Muliyar grama panchayat. The first phase, launched on February 29 last year by Higher Education and Social Justice Minister R. Bindu, saw the completion of blocks for consulting, hydrotherapy, and clinical psychology. The second phase, part of the Kasaragod Development Package, will expand services further with the addition of job training and accommodation facilities. C.H. Kunhambu, MLA, has allocated ₹25 lakh from the Asset Development Fund to address transportation issues faced by beneficiaries visiting the centre for treatment. Despite infrastructure to support 30 individuals, the Centre currently sees a footfall of up to 55 beneficiaries each day. So far, 219 differently abled individuals have undergone treatment, with 195 referred for further care. Of them, 153 received follow-up treatment at the Centre, and 26 were discharged after recovery. At present, 86 victims continue to receive regular services under the project. The initiative focuses on early identification of disabilities, specialised therapies, appointment of special educators and social workers, and long-term support through education, employment, and rehabilitation.

Drug Free Ernakulam campaign launched to free colleges from drug abuse
Kochi: Industries minister P Rajeeve on Sunday launched a Drug Free Ernakulam initiative at Collectorate Conference Hall, with the aim of freeing colleges from the clutches of drug abuse. The initiative will coordinate anti-drug activities implemented by police and excise departments in the district. This is a continuation of the anti-drug activities being implemented at schools. The project will include all colleges in govt, aided, and private sectors, including medical, engineering and nursing colleges. In addition to making drug eradication possible, efforts will be made to reintegrate students who are addicted to drugs back into life through counselling and treatment. Various programmes under the name 'drug-free campus' would be organised in the colleges from Aug 1 to 15, the minister said. All colleges have been instructed to formulate an anti-drug policy. The college that formulates the best policy and performs excellently in making the campus drug-free would receive a special award from the district collector, the minister announced. College protection groups will be formed as a gift to the existing school protection groups by July 31. These groups, implemented in collaboration with the excise department's Neerkootam committees, will play a significant role in securing campuses. Police and excise officers will be included in these groups along with college principals, teachers and parents. At present, college protection groups have been formed in 48 colleges in the district. The station house officer or excise officer of the respective area will be the conveners of the groups. Organisations like NCC, NSS and NGOs will also be part of this.
