Handlebar, Walrus, or 70s? Expert reveals how to find the right moustache for your face shape - and why Justin Bieber and Michael Cera got it wrong

Daily Mail15-06-2025

From the bushy walrus to a signature handlebar, there's a huge range of moustache styles out there.
And picking the right one can seem like a minefield.
But don't worry, chaps – as it turns out particular variations suit certain face shapes.
In the same way that the right pair of sunglasses can complement your looks, a fuzzy upper lip also has the ability to enhance your features.
Olly Walker, a grooming expert from men's personal care brand Harry's, has shared his tips for growing a moustache that flatters your face.
And it goes some way to explaining how David Beckham and Timothée Chalamet are able to pull off very different styles.
To start with, it's best to work out whether you have a triangular, oval, rectangular, square or heart-shaped face.
And if you're struggling, MailOnline's guide can help point you in the right direction.
TRIANGULAR FACE
People with this shaped face – including Harry Styles, Jacob Elordi and Timothée Chalamet – tend to have a narrower forehead and a wider jaw.
Mr Walker explained that triangular faces benefit from a moustache that adds visual weight up top.
'A fuller style like the Chevron works well here – it helps broaden the upper part of your face and draws attention upward,' he said. 'Be patient while growing – it can take around five weeks to get the fullness needed for shaping.'
OVAL FACE
David Beckham and Jake Gyllenhall are among those with oval faces, which are naturally well-balanced – meaning most moustache styles will suit.
'You've got the freedom to experiment, from a bold horseshoe to a neat pencil moustache,' Mr Walker said.
'The only tip? Avoid styles that are overly long or droopy, as they can throw off your natural symmetry.'
David Beckham and Jake Gyllenhall are among those with oval faces, which are naturally well-balanced – meaning most moustache styles will suit
Styles of moustache
The Chevron: thick and wide, covering the upper lip
The Handlebar: long ends that curl upward like bicycle handlebars
The Horseshoe: like an upside-down horseshoe, extending past the lips
The Walrus: thick and bushy, drooping over the upper lip
The Pencil: thin, finely groomed, just above the upper lip
The Toothbrush: thin with vertical sides the width of the nose
The Fu Manchu: long and thin, extending downward past the chin
The Dali: thin moustache with sharp, upward-curving ends
RECTANGULAR FACE
For longer face shapes – such as those belonging to Ben Affleck and Adam Levine – the goal is to avoid elongating the face further, according to the grooming expert.
'Choose a moustache with some width, like a walrus or a natural, full-bodied style,' Mr Walker advised.
'These help create balance by visually shortening the length of your face.'
SQUARE FACE
Henry Cavill, Pedro Pascal and Brad Pitt are among those with square faces.
This face shape features a strong jawline, as well as sharp angles.
Moustache styles that soften and elongate pair best with this face shape, according to Mr Walker.
'A narrower style like the English or handlebar adds contrast to the bold bone structure and brings in a bit of flair,' the expert added.
Ben Affleck (left) has more of a rectangular face, and so a 'full-bodied style' is best, experts said. Brad Pitt (right) however, has more of a square face. Experts say strong jawlines and sharp angles pair best with moustache styles that soften and elongate
HEART-SHAPED FACE
A wider forehead and narrower chin call for a moustache that adds weight to the lower half of the face.
'A medium-thick moustache – like the Painter's Brush or a soft natural style – can help balance out proportions without looking too heavy,' Mr Walker advised.
'Keep the shape rounded at the edges rather than angular, and trim just enough to define the upper lip.'
Celebrities who have embraced this style include Ryan Gosling and Chris Hemsworth.
WHO GOT IT WRONG?
Back in 2020 Justin Bieber sported a moustache that fans went wild over - and not in a good way. The Canadian star, who has an oval-shaped face, opted for a bushy, droopy moustache, which experts do not recommend for his dimensions.
Michael Cera, meanwhile, has a triangular face and so needs to add 'visual weight up top' with his moustache. Previously, he has sported more of a horseshoe look - which is best for more of an oval face.
In the last century the popularity of moustaches has fluctuated, with significant periods of prevalence in the 1920s and 30s and the 1970s and 80s.
In recent years, however, they have become popular again – particularly among hipsters.
Movember – an international charity event where men grow moustaches during the month of November to raise funds for men's health issues – has also raised their fashionableness.
Despite their recent rise in popularity moustaches are the biggest-turn off for women, according to a poll.
Scientist and expert in facial perception, Professor Tim Andrews, teamed up with Wilkinson Sword on the study about the most attractive facial hair styles on men.
A poll of 2,000 adults found the majority considered stubble to be the sexiest facial hair option.
However the moustache was only considered alluring by three per cent - and they scored highly for 'arrogance'.

The trend promoted sultry style choices, including a lot of neon green in honour of the album's cover. She followed her album with a remixed version featuring collaborations with the likes of Lorde, Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande, Bon Iver and Kesha. She also released a Guess remix with Eilish which soared to number one on the UK singles chart in August 2024. During an appearance on Saturday Night Live, she defined the meaning of Brat and said: 'So many people have asked me, what is brat, and honestly, it's just like an attitude, it's a vibe.' Rod Stewart says Britain should ‘give Farage a chance'

Sir Rod Stewart has called on Britain to 'give Nigel Farage a chance' as he revealed how close he came to pulling out of his Glastonbury appearance. The 80-year-old singer backed the Reform UK leader ahead of appearing in the festival's afternoon legends slot on Sunday, 23 years after he headlined the Pyramid Stage. Advertisement 'I've read about (Sir Keir) Starmer cutting off the fishing in Scotland and giving it back to the EU. That hasn't made him popular,' he told The Times. 'We're fed up with the Tories. We've got to give Farage a chance. He's coming across well. Nigel? What options have we got? Rod Stewart has called on Britain to give Reform UK leader Nigel Farage a chance (PA) 'Starmer's all about getting us out of Brexit and I don't know how he's going to do that. Still, the country will survive. It could be worse. We could be in the Gaza Strip.' Admitting his wealth ensures 'a lot of it doesn't really touch me', he insisted he is not out of touch and expressed his support for Ukraine – criticising US president Donald Trump and vice president JD Vance for their treatment of Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelenskiy on his visit to the White House – and Gaza. Advertisement 'It's depressing, what's going on in the Gaza Strip,' he said. 'Netanyahu doesn't realise that this is what happened to his people under the Nazis: total annihilation. And Trump is going to turn the Gaza Strip into Miami?' Stewart said a prolonged bout of flu, which forced him to cancel five shows in the US, nearly forced him to withdraw from a Glastonbury appearance he described to ITV as his 'World Cup final'. 'This time last week I was thinking of cancelling,' he told The Sun, crediting his wife Penny Lancaster with nursing him back to health. 'I have had Influenza A. It's been so terrible. It's the worst thing anyone could possibly have, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Advertisement 'Apart from (Vladimir) Putin. I'd wish it on him.' Stewart told The Sun he had negotiated an extra quarter of an hour on top of the allotted 75 minutes for his set. He confirmed he will be joined at Glastonbury by former Faces bandmate Ronnie Wood, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and Lulu, as well as performing the song Powderfinger by Saturday headliner Neil Young.

Smiling Lily Allen puts on a leggy display as she steps out with stylist Marco Capaldo for second day of Glastonbury - weeks after enjoying a date with actor James Norton

Lily Allen appeared to be in good spirits as she stepped out with her stylist Marco Capaldo at Glastonbury on Saturday morning. The Smile hitmaker, 40, and the 16Arlington co-founder got ready for a jam-packed day as megastars including Neil Young, Raye and Kaiser Chiefs are slated to perform. Kicking off her second day at the Somerset event, Lily looked stylish in a Barbour Bedale wax jacket and Bede wellies. She carried her belongings in a chic black handbag and shielded her eyes with sleek black sunglasses. Meanwhile, Marco kept things cool in an all-black look, pairing black jeans with a chunky knitted jumper. As the weather warmed up, Lily had a quick outfit change and showed off her figure in a striking red lace lingerie set layered under a brown mesh skirt. She swept a cropped red and green jacket over her shoulders to complete her boho-chic look. She shielded her eyes with silver metal frames, carried a matching red padded bag, and completed the look with chunky black boots. Earlier this week, friends Lily and Marco attended the glitzy Serpentine Gallery Summer Party together in London. The singer - who recently split from David Harbour, 50 - turned heads in a strapless black gown adorned with dramatic white feathers and polka dots. Meanwhile, Marco opted for a classic black tuxedo over a crisp white top. The pair appeared in high spirits as they posed for snaps on the red carpet before entering the starry event. Earlier this month, Lily enjoyed a date with actor James Norton, 39, after meeting on the celebrity dating app Raya. The duo made the most of their first outing together, with the pair reportedly seen kissing backstage while attending Charli XCX's Lido Festival show. The singer and actor, 39, were pictured cosying up to one another and sipping on non-alcoholic beers as they watched Charli's show in the capital, before heading to a backstage compound to party with the singer. A source told The Sun: 'James and Lily looked very into each other and they were snogging backstage. 'We were all quite surprised to see them there together, let alone kissing. 'I don't think they've even known each other that long, but it was a fun hang-out backstage and they got taken away by the vibe.' Lily ended her marriage to Stranger Things star husband David Harbour, 50, in December 2024 after four years of marriage, following her discovery he had a secret profile on Raya. James is said to have split from model girlfriend Charlotte Rose Smith, 26, last month before being spotted back on the star-studded dating site. Raya is so exclusive that it accepts only around eight per cent of applicants, but it has more than 10,000 members, with 100,000 on the waiting list. James' Raya profile is said to feature photos of the Happy Valley star with a shaved head – a dramatic new look he's adopted for his upcoming role in Sunny Dancer, currently being filmed in Scotland with co-star Bella Ramsey. The hunk, who is a strong contender to be the next James Bond, started dating Charlotte late last year and was pictured out with her on several occasions. At the time, an insider told The Sun: 'They have been enjoying dates and seem very happy together. 'It has been a year since his relationship with [ex Imogen Potts] ended and he appears to get on so well with Charlotte. They make a lovely couple.' Not long before Lily split from husband David, she turned amateur sleuth after speculating that David had 'cheated' on the same dating app where they met. She was left in 'agony' when she allegedly discovered the actor had a secret profile, The Mail on Sunday revealed. The pop star joined the app herself, pretending to be 'looking for women' – and allegedly found that David had already set up a dating profile. He was reportedly listed on the app as being active for at least a month. Once users find a new partner, they usually disable their profiles. A source said: 'Lily was looking for women that were on Raya and cross-referencing them with women David follows on Instagram to try to figure out who he was seeing. She was doing her Wagatha thing. 'Lily only rejoined Raya to try to figure out whether he was seeing someone. 'Lily has never even looked at anyone since she met David. She is devastated. He broke up with Lily a month ago.
