Legislative committee visits Katteraghatta after Dalit farmer dies in suspicious fire

Time of India30-05-2025
Mandya: The Karnataka Legislative Committee for the welfare of SCs/STs led by Malavalli MLA PM Narendra Swamy, visited Katteraghatta village in KR Pet taluk on Thursday, where a Dalit farmer died in a fire incident.
The panel members visited the house of the deceased, Jayakumar, who died under suspicious circumstances, and the site where the incident took place. Narendra Swamy consoled Jayakumar's wife, Lakshmi. About 10 days ago, the charred body of Jayakumar was found in a haystack in Katteraghatta village.
Following reports raising suspicion about the cause of his death, progressive organisations sought a probe. They alleged that a rowdy-sheeter murdered Jayakumar and burned his body in the haystack.
The organisation demanded an impartial investigation and punishment for the accused, as well as justice for Jayakumar's family.
Committee members Prasad Abbayya, Dr Thimmayya, Abhay Patil, along with KR Pet MLA HT Manju of JD(S), visited the spot. DGP Arun Chakravarthy, DIGP of Southern Range B Boralingaiah, Mandya DC Kumara, and district SP Mallikarjun Baladandi were present.
Meanwhile, the committee appointed IPS officer Dharanidevi Malagatti to investigate the case.

As the investigation including the FSL report is still ongoing no public statement can be made. "We are here to ensure justice for an innocent Dalit family," said Narendra Swamy.
He also clarified that Manju was excluded from the committee meeting because he is not a member of the committee. "Don't read too much into it. Even though the incident took place in his constituency the committee has full authority," he said.

2018 Bhima Koregaon violence: Inquiry commission gets 3-month extension

The Maharashtra government has given a fresh three-month extension to the inquiry commission probing the violence that took place on January 1, 2018 at Koregaon Bhima village in Pune district. The earlier extension granted to the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission was till July 31. The comission has now been given extension till October 31 to submit its report, officials said. Violence had broken out near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial in Pune district on January 1, 2018, a day after the Elgar Parishad conclave was held in Pune. Dalits visit the memorial in large numbers as it commemorates the victory of British forces, which included Dalit soldiers, over the army of the Brahmin Peshwa rulers of Pune in 1818. The two-member commission, comprising retired chief justice of Calcutta High Court J N Patel and former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Mullick, is probing the circumstances that triggered the riots.

Congress Dalit leaders meet at Parameshwara's residence, discuss internal quota

Ministers and MLAs belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community of the Congress held a meeting at the residence of Home Minister G. Parameshwara in the city on Saturday, amid a demand for implementing the internal quota among SC groups. Besides Dr. Parameshwara, three Ministers — Shivaraj Tangadagi, K.H. Muniyappa, R.B. Thimmapur — and 20 MLAs attended the meeting and reportedly discussed issues related to internal quota and intra-party unity among leaders. Minister Priyank Kharge did not attend the meeting since he was in Delhi with regard to the IT/BT programme, sources said. In January, Dr. Parameshwara planned to hold a dinner meeting of Dalit leaders, which sparked off a controversy and was eventually called off after intervention from the party high command. Sources said the meeting of SC Congress leaders was convened to resolve inner differences before the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission submits its report on internal quota to the government. A couple of days ago, Dr. Parameshwara told reporters: 'We will get to know everyone's opinions on the internal quota issue.' The commission, which had monitored the two-month survey, is expected to come out with a formula to divide the 17% reservation for SCs amongst the different sub-groups based on their population and backwardness. The Dalit left has fought for internal reservation on the grounds that they have been historically deprived of reservation benefits.

Two further attacks on Indians in Dublin trigger Indian embassy to issue advisory

. LONDON: The Indian embassy in Dublin has issued a stark warning advising Indian citizens in Ireland to take precautions for their personal safety and avoid deserted areas, especially at odd hours, after two more Indian nationals have been brutally attacked and left with serious injuries. The Indians embassy notice said there has been 'an increase in the instances of physical attacks reported against Indian citizens in Ireland recently' and that the embassy was 'in touch with the authorities concerned'. It advised Indian nationals to take "reasonable precautions'. On July 19 in Tallaght, an Indian man was left with blood pouring out of his head, his underwear and trousers removed, after an unprovoked assault by around 10 teenagers who stabbed him in the face multiple times when he was walking to his temple. Then, on July 24, an Indian man, in his 20s, was attacked by a group of teenagers at a tram stop in Dublin at 10.30 pm local time. He was pushed, beaten, and stabbed in the face with a screwdriver and taken to Mater Misericordiae Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. On July 28, Dr Santosh Yadav, a senior data scientist in his 30s, was returning to his apartment in Dublin following dinner when six teenagers attacked him from behind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Max Estates ₹6 Cr+ Homes In Gurgaon Max Estates - Estate 361 Book Now Undo 'They snatched my glasses, breaking them, and then beat me relentlessly across my head, face, neck, chest, hands, and legs, leaving me bleeding on the pavement,' he said. He managed to call the Gardaí and an ambulance took him to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown. His cheekbone is fractured, and he has been referred for specialist care. 'Racist attacks on Indian men and other minorities are surging across Dublin — on buses, in housing estates, and on public streets. Yet, the govt is silent. We deserve to walk on the streets without fear,' Yadav said. Three protests were held last week in Dublin calling for an end to racism and justice for Indian victims. A Gardaí spokesperson confirmed the police are investigating all three attacks and said: 'Every hate crime reported to An Garda Síochána is professionally investigated.' S Aditya Mandal, an AI professional from West Bengal, who has been working in Dublin for eight years, told TOI: 'No one has been arrested till now in any of these three attacks. Indians here are feeling scared for their families and many are reconsidering whether they want to stay in Ireland.'
