The brilliant Dyson Airwrap alternative – that's half the price

The brilliant Dyson Airwrap alternative – that's half the price

Telegraph07-03-2025
If your hair 'tools' at home extend to a hairbrush and a hairdryer, but you're thinking of investing in something to elevate your style a little, allow me to guide you through a booming market for gadgets that volumise limp hair, curl straight hair or indeed straighten curly hair. Some are established, there are lots of new ones and many are pretty expensive. Meanwhile some use high temperatures to achieve results and others use air – so what do you really need from a product that often has a price tag in the hundreds?
The Multi-Tasker, £195, Hershesons
I've tried my fair share. The one I keep going back to at the moment is The Multi-Tasker by Hershesons, which is really handy if you want one tool to do lots of different things and if you like a bit of texture in your hair. In the kit, which costs £195, you get a main handle and three attachments. If you have medium to longer hair like me, this includes a heated brush, a classic tong and a waver (there's a set for short hair too). The heated brush is excellent for adding root lift into limp hair (you can watch an easy tutorial to recreate this on hershesons.com).
The attachment I've been using the most is the waver, which looks like a wider version of an Eighties crimper – except it gives a really modern, cool wave in a matter of minutes. (Honestly, I can do my full head of long hair in around five minutes.) You can adjust the temperature on the dial, too, so if you have fine hair like me I'd start off on a lower heat.
If you like your hair straight, I don't think you can beat Ghd straighteners. I am yet to use another set that offer as much smoothness and shine. The brand's newest creation, the Chronos Max (£299, Ghd), has wider plates so is particularly brilliant if you have thick or very long hair that you want to straighten. Just one pass on each section of hair works wonders; I'd just make sure your hair is completely dry before using it.
Of course, if you'd rather a tool that takes you from damp hair to styled without needing a hairdryer, Dyson is the market leader on stylers that use air flow, not heat. I am asked so often about Dyson gadgets – and if they're really worth the steep price tag.
I think the Airwrap (£479.99, Dyson) is very good: it has lots of different attachments to add body, curl and volume in the hair, although in my experience the curl doesn't last beyond an afternoon or evening (which, for much of the time, is no problem). It takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it, you can go from damp to styled hair in around 10 minutes.
The Airstrait is Dyson's alternative to hair straighteners that use heat (from £379.99, Dyson). I think these are excellent, but as the straighteners can't reach your roots, you will need to dry your roots first before using it on your damp mid-lengths and ends. Because they are so light to use, much of the tech is in the plug socket which is quite bulky, so do bear that in mind.
With any of these tools (even the Dysons), I think it's essential you prep the hair properly with a heat-protecting spray (I've included some of my favourites here).
Three of the best… heat-protecting products
The Prologue Hair Primer by Arkive
£13, Boots
Not only does this smell uplifting and zesty, it's a brilliant styling product, too. Spray it into damp hair and the clever heat-activated formula means it will hold the shape whatever styling tool you use – whether a straightener or a tong. An excellent option for anyone with finer hair.
Extra Strength Dream Coat by Color Wow
£32, Space NK
If you have very coarse, curly or frizzy hair, this best-selling conditioning heat protectant spray is for you. Apply to damp hair and it adds hydration which will last until you next wash it, with the sort of shine and gloss you only really get after a salon blow-dry. A friend with curly hair has been committed to this for years!
Almost Everything Cream by Hershesons
From £14, Hershesons
As the name suggests, this has lots of different uses. Most useful is to spread a pump or two in your hands, then smooth it into freshly washed, damp hair. It takes away frizz and adds a protective layer, ready for any tools. You can also use it to calm any finer baby hairs around the hairline.

I tried a £449 Dyson fan in UK heatwave - it's cool, but that price is a problem

Can Dyson's £449 technology beat a £20 fan from a supermarket? We find out. Unless you are one of the lucky ones who has invested in some high-tech air conditioning, you're probably, like me, suffering in this current heatwave. Trying to get a good night's sleep or attempting to work from home when the mercury is well into the red is almost impossible. One simple way to keep cool during the summer is to buy a cheap fan and hope that the gentle breeze it produces will reduce the temperature. A basic blower will cost around £20, and although they don't look very appealing, they will do the job. But what if you fancy something a little more flash and feature-packed? ‌ Of course, Dyson has been making more premium fans for over 15 years and, along with getting rid of the old-fashioned blades, many now cool the room as well as filtering the air. ‌ That means you get fewer pollutants in your lungs, along with it clearing things such as allergens, viruses, bacteria and unwanted gases. With my house currently hotter than sauna, I felt it was a good time to try out the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 fan to the test. As the name suggests, this not only blows out air but also cleans things as well. Living in London means there should be plenty for this device to filter, so how did it do? The first thing to note is that this is not a subtle accessory that can be hidden away. It's big, tall, bold and tells everyone you have a Dyson fan keeping things cool. Switch it on and the totally fanless system instantly gets to work cooling things down. Unless you set it to the max, it's very quiet, and it can also spin to push air around the room or stay in one position if you simply want all of the cooling for yourself. You can even tell it how much or little rotation you want via the bundled remote control. A screen on the front shows the level of cooling along, spin and power - and that's not all, as you'll also see how polluted the room is via this mini display. Green is good, amber means things and getting worse and red shows you've got some nasties in the home. If the Purifier Cool PC1 spots something, it will set about removing the issues from the air. It's a nice feature but I wouldn't say I've felt any better or sneezed less since the device has been plugged into my living room. ‌ As I mentioned before, it ships with a neat little remote control, plus there's full access to all the settings via the Dyson app as well. Using your smartphone you can check the air quality and set timers which shut the fan off after certain amount of time. ‌ There's no question that the Purifier Cool PC1 purifying fan is far more advanced than anything I've ever used before. It looks like something from the future and also makes sure my lungs aren't full of muck. The smartphone control is a nice addition and knowing that it removes allergens brings a bit of peace of mind to anyone who suffers from these annoying health issues. ‌ Yes, Dyson does make a very good fan, but it comes at a massive cost. The model I tried is priced at over £400! That's a ludicrous amount of money, especially as UK heatwaves don't last that long. Unlike my cheap supermarket model that can be shoved in a cupboard during the winter, it feels like the Dyson needs to become part of furniture all year round. No, my cheap fan can't filter the air or be controlled by an app. It's also very ugly and not something that will may make your neighbours envious when they pop round for a BBQ - something Dyson's model definitely does. Does the Purifier Cool PC1 purifying fan do a great job? 100% yes! Is £449 way too much for a fan? Unless you just won the Lotto jackpot I think it probably is.

ghd's heat protection spray that's 'transformed' dry hair and 'smells amazing' is now £15

It's no secret that heat is bad for hair, but shoppers can protect their locks with a bargain hair care spray For many people, heat styling tools are a key part of daily haircare routines. However, too much heat can wreak havoc, turning once-luscious locks into dry, brittle bird nests. That's why a quality heat protectant is so important - and now shoppers can get a premium hair care product from beloved brand ghd for less. Amazon has a deal on the ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray, which is now £15.20 down from £23.95, and promises to protect against heat damage for hair that both looks and feels healthier. The spray is suitable for all hair types, and is also sulphate free, paraben free and cruelty free. According to the brand, the product works with "protection polymers to help protect hair from heat whilst improving the condition of the hair cuticle after heat styling". For best results, evenly apply the spray to towel-dried hair and blow-dry. Alternatively, it can be applied lightly onto dry hair before heat styling. If this product isn't quite right, shoppers could also try the Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum for £28 direct from the brand. The serum is said to create a satin shine and help styles last, while also protecting the hair from heat. Alternatively, Boots has the TRESemmé Pro Collection Heat Protect Spray Keratin Smooth 200ml for £3.05 down from £6.10. This wallet-friendly solution is enriched with keratin proteins and marula oil and reduces frizz, detangles knots, boosts shine, adds softness and minimises flyaways, as well as offering up to 230C heat protection. However, ghd Bodyguard has a great 4.6-star rating on Amazon. One buyer said: "Firstly, I love the smell. My hair seemed to dry quicker and the end result was amazing, It not only protected my hair from the heat, but left my very thick hair swishy. I went out and met some friends and got lots of compliments on the look of my hair, it also left it feeling silky." Another said: "Very good hair heat protection from the hair styling products and can see it really works cause after hair styling hair looks very shiny." However, some found it wasn't quite right for them. One buyer said: "It's ok. Made my hair feel dry. The spray wasn't good, it came out in spurts rather than a fine mist." One shopper added: "Love this product, smells divine and leaves your hair silky, shiny, smooth and weightless. Love all the products from GHD, don't think you can ever go wrong with them. Reasonably priced as a little goes a long way." For a great deal on a premium heat protecting spray, Amazon's offer on the ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray is worth a browse.

GHD Helios Hair Dryer review: Dried my hair in record time

3 If, like me, your hair dryer's more of a fire hazard than a functioning hot tool, you may be due an upgrade. With so many available, it may be hard to know which dryer to trust - so I tested one from one of the biggest names on the market. Read my GHD Helios Hair Dryer to find out more. 3 BUY FROM GHD After all, time is money, and with the speed I was able to achieve both sleek, straight locks and the type of big, bouncy blow-outs Sabrina Carpenter herself would be proud of, this investment is practically paying for itself. GHD has long been a leader when it comes to hair straighteners, curlers and all things electronic, and the Helios' innovative technology is taking at-home styling to another level. Beyond its pure power, the classic, lightweight design's ergonomic features help fight the dreaded mid-drying dead arm. Combined with my trusty GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush Size 1, a must-use for anyone with long, fine hair looking to create volume like me, it's a guaranteed start to a Good Hair Day. For more tried-and-tested options from the same brand, read Sun Shopping's best GHD hair straighteners article. Pros Super-fast drying speed Lightweight and ergonomic Smooth and shiny results Gives a good amount of volume when used with mousse Quieter than other hair dryers I've tried Cons Takes a while to cool down after use Expensive Overall rating: 9/10 How I tested the GHD Helios Having spent some time over the years putting the latest hair dryers on blast, I like to think of myself as a bit of an expert in the DIY blow-dry department - whether you're looking to keep things smooth or wanting to pump up the volume. For both results, I began with freshly washed hair and applied a heat protection spray to avoid damaging my hair before starting the blow-dry process. Over the years, I've cut my bouncy blow-dry routine down to an easy three steps: I turn my head upside down and rough-dry my hair to give it some volume. I flip my hair over each side and blast the roots and ends until it's about 80% dry. Separate my hair into sections and use a round brush to give it a shiny, bouncy blowout. A smooth blowout follows a similar pattern, with holding tension key to fighting frizz: I rough-dry my hair until it reaches 80% dryness. I separate my hair into sections and use the round brush to pull my hair tight for smooth results. Angle the Helios nozzle down the hair and move with round brush, maintaining tension. GHD Helios review: Quickfire Q&A How much does the GHD Helios Hair Dryer cost? Its RRP is £179, but it can be found on sale on the GHD website and at selected retailers, including Look Fantastic. Does the GHD Helios Hair Dryer have any special features? Salon-worthy results are no issue for the advanced airflow technology. There's temperature and power control, with a cool-shot feature to help set styles in place. Plus, blow-dry at any time thanks to the low sound levels. What's included with the GHD Helios Hair Dryer? Each hair dryer comes with a bespoke contour nozzle for controlled, concentrated heat to help create your best blow-dry ever. Who's the GHD Helios Hair Dryer best for? Anyone looking to achieve a salon-style blowout from the comfort of your own home. What we loved: Temperature and power control makes it customisable to your hair's needs. Ergonomic, lightweight design means this hair dryer won't leave your arms aching. What we didn't: To be honest... not a lot. The price is a little eye-watering, but well worth the invest for anyone regularly doing DIY blow-dries as the performance speaks for itself. GHD Helios review: The Nitty Gritty First impressions GHD's packaging is one I will always love. The brand keeps things classy and simple at a time when every hairdryer seems to come with multiple heads and a short novel of a user manual. The hair dryer's core colours consist of black (which I went for) as well as white, plum, ink blue. The new mystic aqua is currently available on the GHD website, Sephora and John Lewis, as well as a limited-edition Icy Blue Gift Set on the brand site. Champagne gold and the pink edition are still listed with selected beauty retailers. All retail for £179 except Mystic Aqua And Pink (£189) and Champagne Gold (£199). Selected models are currently on sale for £139 on the GHD website, Boots, Amazon and John Lewis. Performance review From the first step, I knew I was dealing with elite drying technology. The GHD Helios was instantly a major upgrade on my previous hair dryer, with the GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush Size 1 the perfect pairing for big volume and a smooth blowout. GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush Size 1, £20.95 BUY FROM GHD Using my old hair dryer, it would take about 20 minutes to get it to 80% dry. Now, I was looking at less than 10 minutes to reach the same level. I've managed to cut my drying time in half, which is a huge perk if, like me, you favour a morning shower. At this point, it was time to incorporate the round brush, keeping the contoured nozzle close to the brush, I lifted and shaped my hair to add volume and movement. With my previous hairdryer, my arms would start to tire a few minutes in because it was so heavy, but with Helios, the lightweight design meant I could make it through the entire routine without feeling like I'd hit the gym. Usually, giving myself a blowout is a tedious labour of love, but the Helios helped me get a shinier, healthier-looking finish with lots of volume in a fraction of the time. Does it deliver? If anything, the Helios over-delivered on its promise to cut down drying time. I was expecting to shave off a couple of minutes, but the time difference has changed my getting-ready routine for the better (and given me some extra time in bed!). How much is GHD Helios Hair Dryer? Whilst it retails from £179, the dryer can currently be found on sale for £139 on the GHD website and selected retailers, including Amazon and John Lewis Where to buy: The benefit of GHD being such a huge brand is that you can shop at pretty much every beauty retailer you can think of, including: What is the difference between GHD Air and Helios? The GHD Air is slightly heavier and better suited for salon use, while the Helios is lighter, faster, and engineered for more controlled home hairstyling. The Helios also includes newer tech for smoother finishes. Dyson Supersonic vs GHD Helios? Whilst the Dyson wins on the attachment front, the Helios offers a more traditional feel and can often be quicker for a full blow-dry. If the Dyson Supersonic's £300 price tag is putting you off, the Helios is a great alternative. Is GHD Helios good for fine hair? Yes - being able to control the heat and power meant I could prevent frizz and control my fine hair without causing excessive damage to my hair.
