The historic Soho coffee shop that makes the best negronis in London, according to cocktail experts

Time Out6 days ago
The best time of day is surely aperitivo hour. Luckily, you won't have to be sunning yourself on the Amalfi Coast to get a bit of la dolce vita this summer, because London is home to a fabulous number of Italian bars and restaurants serving up delicious spritz, salty snacks and, of course, negronis.
So where should you go in the city to find the best concoction of gin, Campari and vermouth? Time Out asked seven bar experts – including Tayer + Elementary 's Monica Berg, Carina Soto Velásquez from Hackney cocktail bar Equal Parts, and co-owner of Three Sheets Max Venning – to name the number one negroni in the capital.
According to the experts, London's best negroni can be found at Bar Italia, an Italian coffee shop with a super late licence in Soho. Kicking back with a negroni at this authentic caff is less about fancy ingredients or innovative twists, and more about soaking up the vibes.
'If you want a negroni like how you'd have it in Italy, go to a divey place like Bar Italia,' said Missy Flynn, cocktail expert and co-founder of the American-inspired Rita's in Soho.
'The negroni is so simple, the most important thing is to have the right ratio and enough dilution. Most simple Italian restaurants and cafés should make a good one.'
'Bar Italia is somewhere you can go after work. It's inexpensive, you can just stop in and have one outside. It's fun.'
Mixologist Mr Lyan also said some of the best negronis could be found at London's casual Italian eateries, particularly Bar Italia.
'The good thing about a negroni is it's fairly bulletproof,' he said. 'Bar Italia in Soho is ace for grabbing one, it feels really stripped back and you can enjoy the simplicity of what it is.'
Honourable mentions go to runners up Tayer + Elementary in Shoreditch and Bar Termini in Soho, which both received two nominations from our expert panel.
The tiny wood-panelled Soho spot Bar Termini was recommended by Monica Berg and Carina Soto Velásquez. As a negroni specialist, Termini is known for serving innovative twists on the classic drink. Be warned: these bevvies come strong, as they are served straight up in coupettes.
Both Gabriel Pryce from Rita's and Mr Lyan shouted our Old Street cocktail bar Tayer + Elementary for its unusual and 'genius' takes on the negroni, which include flavours like rhubarb and vetiver.
Also nominated for the best negroni in London was steak restaurant Hawksmoor for its cherry version of the tipple, chosen by Stephanie Randle-Solley from Exale Brewing. St John Smithfield was named the best place to sip the drink by Max Venning, and Swift 's Coral Anderson said the capital's best was found at Frank's, the French-styled bar underneath the St James's brasserie Maison François.

Ryan Reynolds' £7.5m target's dad drops huge hint on record Wrexham transfer going through

A Wrexham transfer target's dad appears to have hinted that a record £7.5m move is close with a cryptic post, sparking fan excitement as the club gears up for the Championship Nathan Broadhead's dad appears to have dropped a major hint that his son is about to complete a move to Wrexham in a club-record deal. The Red Dragons, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were reported to have tabled a £7.5million bid for the Ipswich Town forward last week. ‌ Broadhead, who was previously part of Wrexham's academy, joined the Tractor Boys from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023. He played a key role in Ipswich 's back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, before being restricted to just seven Premier League starts last season. ‌ Now in the final year of his contract at Portman Road, talks over the Wales international's proposed move were initially understood to be progressing well. The deal looked to have stalled at the weekend though due to injuries and transfer interest in other Ipswich attackers. ‌ However, the 27-year-old's dad, Mark Broadhead, has offered hope to Wrexham fans after sharing a cryptic post from his personal Facebook account. Simply captioned "12 years later," it shows an image of a young Nathan playing for Everton in 2013, followed by one of him celebrating a goal for Ipswich last year. The final picture, titled "Now," shows Nathan sporting a Wrexham shirt while kneeling on the pitch at the Racecourse Ground back in his academy days. While the deal has not been confirmed by either club, supporters have taken it as a sign that his return is imminent after a screengrab of the post was shared on X by the Fearless in Devotion fan account. One person replied: "That's all the info we need." While someone else posted: "As good as an official announcement, that." Another supporter wrote: "Someone may have just let it slip also outside the ground too." Ipswich fans also seemed convinced, with one adding: "You've got yourselves one hell of a player. Good luck this season." ‌ Broadhead has bagged 23 goals in 83 appearances for Ipswich in total and his arrival at Wrexham would be seen as a big coup. The Welsh side are preparing for their first campaign in the second tier for 43 years after securing promotion from League One in April. Manager Phil Parkinson has so far signed eight players this summer as he looks to improve his squad. Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore became the latest addition on Tuesday, joining on a three-year contract in a deal reportedly worth £2m. ‌ Wrexham face a tough start to the season as they travel to face relegated Southampton on Saturday in their opening game. Liberato Cacace is another new face who signed up last month from Italian outfit Empoli, and the left-back is looking forward to getting started. Explaining why he signed, he told the BBC: "There was interest in Italy, but for me, I'm a big football fan as well. I watch a lot of football and I've always watched English football, from the Premier League to the Championship so I know the level I'm heading into. ‌ "It was always a big dream of mine to play in the UK. Obviously Wrexham having so much publicity in the media as well you could see what the club was like. It's a very exciting project and I'm also very excited to start the season as well." He added: "I've already had chats with the players and with the manager and I think I'm settling in pretty well. I'm a professional person as well so I always like to keep fit. I'm going to use every day to make sure that against Southampton I'll be ready to go." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Donald Trump is more like a capricious medieval king than a modern politician, a former UK ambassador to the US has said. Kim Darroch said the President had turned the Oval Office in the White House 'into a reality TV set'. US President Donald Trump | Getty Images Lord Darroch was the UK's ambassador to the US during Mr Trump's first term, but quit in 2019 following a huge row over leaked cables in which he described the President's administration as "clumsy and inept'. Mr Trump later called him a "stupid guy" and a "pompous fool". Lord Darroch told the event the President now had a 'slightly scary sense of destiny' after surviving an assassination attempt last year. He said Mr Trump 'was made by reality TV', adding: 'He was the American version of Alan Sugar, Sir Alan, on The Apprentice.' Lord Darroch pointed to the Oval Office showdown with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February. 'I did notice at the end of it, [Mr Trump] said, 'This is going to make great TV'. So that's become a reality TV show, a daily show for his followers.' Later, the former ambassador told the event: 'He's more like a sort of medieval king in his capricious decision-making, than he is like a modern politician.' 'So far, against a lot of predictions, Keir Starmer has proved himself really quite an adept Trump whisperer,' he said. 'He's done some clever things.' Referring to the row over his leaked cables, Lord Darroch, who also served as a national security adviser and UK permanent representative to the European Union, said it was better to 'crash and burn' over briefings that turned out to be accurate.
