Burnaby RCMP's Gang Enforcement Team had a busy nine-day stretch earlier this month, making sizable seizures during three traffic stops between July 8 and 16.
In all, the team seized two vehicles, multiple weapons, more than a kilogram of illicit drugs, 55 cartons of illegal cigarettes and more than $63,000 in cash over the span, Burnaby RCMP said in a news release Friday.
The first traffic stop took place July 8 near Beresford Street and McKay Avenue. BGET officers stopped a Porsche and made 'observations' that led them to arrest the occupant, police said.
A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of the illegal cigarettes, plus nearly $16,000 in cash.

On July 14, the second stop occurred during proactive patrols near Boundary Road and Canada Way, according to Burnaby RCMP. This time, BGET officers stopped a Tesla and noted that the driver had 'a criminal drug trafficking history.'
'Observations made by the officers resulted in the arrest of the occupant, and a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of the vehicle, two cellular phones, a collapsible baton, miscellaneous illicit drugs and over $4,000 in cash,' the release reads.

Two days later, on July 16, the third traffic stop occurred, this time on Imperial Street near Gray Avenue.
In this case, too, the driver had a criminal drug trafficking history, according to police. The driver also had a history of assault with a weapon.
After arresting the vehicle's occupant, officers seized it, along with two cellphones, two knives, more than a kilogram of 'miscellaneous illicit drugs,' and nearly $44,000 in cash.

While all three drivers were arrested, none of them have been charged. The investigations are ongoing and 'appropriate charges will be forwarded' when they are concluded, police said.
'These are just three examples of the great work that our BGET officers are doing day in and day out,' said Insp. Matt Toews, in the release.
'Every time we disrupt a drug organization like this is one step closer to safer streets and a safer community.'

3-year-old drowns at Long Sault, Ont. beach: OPP

An Ontario Provincial Police crest is pictured on an officer's uniform. (Supplied) Police say a three-year-old child died after drowning at an eastern Ontario beach Saturday afternoon. Ontario Provincial Police say emergency services responded to Mille Roches Beach in Long Sault, Ont. at approximately 5:45 p.m. A caller told police that a child had no vital signs and that off-duty medical professionals were conducting resuscitation efforts. Cornwall paramedics rushed the child to hospital under a police escort as efforts to revive the child continued, OPP said in a news release Sunday. The child was later pronounced dead, police say. Their identity is not being released. The St. Lawrence Parks Commission website says Mille Roches Beach remains closed until further notice. Woodlands Beach remains open. It's the latest in a string of deadly incidents on eastern Ontario waters this summer. On Thursday, a three-year-old child drowned at Sandbanks Provincial Park in Prince Edward County. Last weekend, OPP reported two incidents on East Lake in Prince Edward County and one on the St. Lawrence River near Ganonoque. OPP reported earlier this week that it had already responded to double the number of drowning deaths it saw at this time last year in eastern Ontario. There have been two reported drownings in Ottawa so far this summer.

Grande Prairie residents charged after RCMP seize drugs, weapons, contraband cigarettes

Two people have been charged after Grande Prairie RCMP executed a search warrant that led to the seizure of drugs, weapons and contraband cigarettes from a residence. On July 17, officers executed the warrant at a duplex in Scenic Ridge in Grande Prairie, where they seized 900 grams of suspected cocaine, 100 grams of suspected mushrooms, 11 firearms (including three prohibited firearms that were loaded), over 15,000 rounds of ammunition, four prohibited devices, 16,000 contraband cigarettes and materials consistent with drug trafficking. A 50 year old man and a 36 year old woman, both residents of Grande Prairie face a total of 17 charges including two counts of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, careless use or storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and fraud. Following a bail hearing, both were released on conditions. They're scheduled to appear in court in Grande Prairie on July 28. 'The combination of drugs and firearms is a bad mix for any community," said Cst. Satbir Sall in a media release. 'We are thankful that as a result of this investigation, those drugs are firearms are no longer on the streets of Grande Prairie. 'Grande Prairie RCMP remains fully committed in building safer communities by working in partnership with our community, as well as through investigative and enforcement efforts, to achieve this goal.'
