South Korea national security adviser travels to Washington ahead of tariff deadline
SEOUL, July 20 (Reuters) - South Korea's national security adviser has headed to Washington, authorities said on Sunday, with less than two weeks to go until U.S. President Donald Trump's Aug. 1 deadline to secure a trade deal or face steep tariffs. Wi Sung-lac's trip comes just two weeks after his last visit to Washington for talks on tariffs and security. After Trump's announcement, South Korea said it planned to intensify trade talks. There were no immediate details on who he was planning to meet. Presidential aide Woo Sang-ho told journalists Wi would engage in negotiations on various issues, without elaborating. Earlier this month, Trump said he planned to impose a 25% tariff on South Korea from August 1, posing the first major test for South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung since he came to office barely a month ago. On his last trip to Washington, Wi said he had met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and proposed including security and investments in trade negotiations. Wi also proposed an early summit between the leaders of the two countries, according to media reports.

Ring doorbell users' hack fears as customers say unknown devices gained access to accounts
Ring doorbell users have flooded TikTok with alarming claims that their accounts were hacked, giving strangers access to their cameras. Videos shared on social media show customers claiming Ring was hit by a 'massive hack,' sparking fears of compromised security. One user posted a screenshot showing multiple unfamiliar logins to her account, including three iPhones, as well as Safari and Chrome browsers. She warned others, showing how to manually remove unrecognised devices from the Ring app to block future access. The user said: 'Ring camera had a mass hack on May 28 2025 and failed to notify other customers or users of their app. 'I was in fact one of those people that were also hacked. I just went to checked it and they have failed to notify or acknowledge the concern of security breach.' However, Ring has now come forward to clarify what the issue is and to put its customers at ease that no security breach has taken place. Users who watched the video were panicking and started sharing their experiences. One user said: 'Yesterday me and another neighbour tried to post about it in the neighbourhood section of the app, it went through and none of the comments appeared. Today both posts were deleted. Sketch!!' Another said: 'I've had three devices; safari, iPhone and iPad. I don't own an iPad.' But according to the company and tech experts, it's not a data breach - just a glitch. According to a tech news website, the issue wasn't the result of a data breach but rather a glitch caused by ab update from Ring, which led to prior login dates being incorrectly shown as May 28, 2025, and device names being displayed as 'Device name not found.' This update affected every device which has been used to connect to Ring which means even old phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices showed up as new logins. On its website, the company said: 'We are aware of an issue where information is displaying inaccurately in Control Centre. 'This is the result of a backend update, and we're working to resolve this.

Merz admits Europeans have been ‘free-riders' on defence
German chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted that Europe has historically underfunded its own security, relying heavily on the United States. During his first visit to London as chancellor, Mr Merz signed the "historic" Kensington treaty with UK prime minister Keir Starmer, aiming to deepen defence cooperation and boost economic growth. Mr Merz stated that Germany would do "whatever it takes" to increase its defence spending and expand the size of its army. He said that he and the US president are "on the same page" regarding Ukraine, coordinating efforts to end the war and discussing trade debates and tariffs. The chancellor and Sir Keir discussed boosting European support for Ukraine, with Merz indicating that Ukraine would soon receive substantial additional support in long-range strike systems.
