Lancashire: New images show how Eden Project Morecambe will look
The project, led by Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster University, has faced several delays due to funding but the images have been hailed an "exciting" development. Andy Jasper, chief executive officer of the Eden Project, said: "This project is profoundly important to us all. "It is not just a project for Morecambe, but for the whole of the UK, and we are delighted to share how the design process is progressing."
Eden Project Morecambe will be built on the promenade where Bubbles leisure complex used to be sited, with the Grade II listed Winter Gardens and Midland Hotel its near neighbours.It will be only the second eco-visitor attraction and botanical garden in the UK, following Eden Project Cornwall which opened in March 2001.Described as a "global garden", it will feature three large shell-shaped pavilions overlooking Morecambe Bay, "inspired by the natural geometries, beauty and efficiency of seashells".
Visitors to Eden Project Morecambe will explore The Realm of the Sun - a bright, tropical landscape of the near future where "humans have discovered how to heal and re-engage with the broken rhythms of the natural world around them".They will also visit The Realm of the Moon - billed as a "dark space bringing to life the extraordinary rhythms of Morecambe Bay and the species that call it home".Defining the space will be The Elder Tree, designed to be a 65ft (20m) theatrical sculpture.
A hyper-real rock pool showing the sped-up cycles of tides, days and seasons in an "ever-changing immersive world" is also part of the design.Jolyon Brewis, Partner at Grimshaw, said: "Influenced by the natural rhythms of Morecambe, two extraordinary structures – the Realm of the Sun and the Realm of the Moon – will define this destination."Details about a further two realms – a four seasons garden and a public realm – will be unveiled later.

British Airways flight forced to divert to Manchester after mid-air emergency
A British Airways flight to Belfast was forced to divert to Manchester for almost four hours after pilots declared an emergency on board. Flight BA1410 from London Heathrow to Belfast touched down in Manchester on Saturday morning (26 July) following a 'suspected technical issue' with the aircraft. The Airbus A319 had departed London at around 8am before the pilot sent out an emergency squawk code around 30 minutes into the flight. A squawk code 7770 is used on flights to indicate an emergency. According to data from FlightAware, the Belfast-bound flight was an hour into the almost one and a half hour journey when it landed at Manchester Airport. The aircraft circled for a short time before redirecting to the northern aviation hub. Air Live reported that emergency services met the flight on landing. At around 1pm, almost four hours after landing, passengers were boarded onto a different plane to continue the 35-minute flight to Belfast. British Airways said that the aircraft diverted to Manchester as a 'precaution' due to a 'minor suspected technical issue'. The airline added that customers were 'looked after' during the delay while an aircraft was sent from Heathrow to continue the flight. It's not the first aircraft to be diverted due to a technical issue this week. On Monday, a Tui flight landed on a burst tyre at East Midlands airport, causing a series of delays and diversions as the aircraft was unable to be immediately moved. Flight BY7113 departed from Birmingham airport but was diverted mid-air after a punctured tyre was identified. The plane landed at the Leicestershire terminal. All passengers were evacuated, but the aircraft remained on the runway. Flights at East Midlands were temporarily prevented from taking off as a consequence of the incident, with some being diverted to nearby Birmingham airport.

Three operators given green light to run extra train services across the UK
East Coast Main Line passengers are set to benefit from additional train services starting in December, after the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) approved timetable enhancements. The regulator granted permission to open access operators Lumo, Grand Central, and Hull Trains for some new routes. However, other proposed services were rejected due to concerns over insufficient capacity, potential performance impacts, and the effect on government revenue. Approved changes include Lumo extending London King's Cross-Edinburgh services to Glasgow, and adding more routes between London King's Cross and Newcastle. Hull Trains will run an additional train from London King's Cross to Hull on weekdays and Saturdays, while Grand Central will increase its regional operation, including a new link to Seaham on the County Durham coast. Stephanie Tobyn, ORR's director of strategy, policy and reform, said: 'Approving these additional open access services will increase connectivity on the East Coast Main Line. 'Importantly, we have ensured the approval of these services can be accommodated alongside the major service uplifts by other operators, which have been planned into the December 2025 timetable, so together passengers and freight customers can benefit from more direct connections and greater choice from December.' Among the rejected proposals was a plan from Hull Trains for new services between London King's Cross and Sheffield. Owner FirstGroup said it was 'disappointed' by the decision, as the plan would have provided Sheffield with its first regular service from London King's Cross since 1968, and introduced a direct service to the capital for 'an estimated 350,000 people in the Worksop and Woodhouse catchment areas'. Open access operators set their own fares, take on all revenue risk and receive no taxpayer-funded subsidies. They are excluded from the Government's ongoing nationalisation of Britain's train services. In January, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander wrote to the ORR expressing concerns that the open access model can cause 'potential congestion' and result in taxpayers being 'left to fill shortfalls' in maintenance costs. She stated that she expects 'the impacts on the taxpayer and on overall performance' to be 'given primacy' by the regulator when it analyses open access proposals. Government-owned LNER, which runs services on the East Coast Main Line, is planning a major timetable change in December, with up to 37 daily services and quicker journeys between London King's Cross and Edinburgh. It has previously described the overhaul as 'transformational' and 'the biggest change in a generation'.
