Goa joins world in Yoga Day celebration

Goa joined the rest of the country and the world in marking the 11th
International Day of Yoga
, on Saturday, with a series of events across the state that saw participation from govt officials, public sector employees, civic bodies, and private organisations.
From the defence establishments at Vasco to the Selaulim dam, the message of 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' echoed across the state.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant delivered the state's official message on the occasion, calling yoga 'India's timeless gift to humanity.' Describing it as a global movement that fosters health, peace, and inner balance, Sawant urged people to adopt yoga as a way of life for a healthier and brighter future.
'Yoga connects us with ourselves, with nature, and with the world,' he said.
Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai presided over a morning yoga session for the Raj Bhavan staff, including the secretary to the governor, Sanjeev Gauns Desai, at the Old Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan.
The most picturesque location to mark the day was the Selaulim Dam, where monsoon clouds hovered above the serene waters in Sanguem.
The Central Bureau of Communication, South Goa district administration, and Goa police came together to organise a 'Yoga Sangam' on the crest of the dam.

In Panaji, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) organised a yoga session at its headquarters. The session saw active participation from MD and CEO Sandip Jacques, director of municipal administration Brijesh Manerkar, and IPSCDL staff.
As part of its centenary celebrations, Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias at Miramar hosted a special yoga session led by national yoga medallist Ashish Kumar Pal. The session drew a significant turnout from members and local residents.
The day's observances across Goa reflected a growing recognition of yoga's role in promoting physical resilience, mental clarity, and social well-being — principles that continue to guide the spirit of International Yoga Day since its inception eleven years ago.

Madurai to get third dog sterilisation centre
Madurai: In a move to strengthen its animal birth control (ABC) programme, the Madurai Corporation will soon open a third sterilisation centre in the city. An existing corporation health facility near Thangaraj Salai, opposite the corporation swimming pool, will be converted into a small sterilisation unit at an estimated cost of ₹50 lakh. The decision follows a recent stray dog census that counted 38,348 street dogs within city limits. Currently, two ABC centres—at Sellur and Vellaikal—carry out sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) procedures, performing 20–30 surgeries daily as per Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) ABC Rules, 2023. In 2024, around 4,000 dogs were sterilised. With the new centre, the corporation aims to increase this to 5,000 by year-end. "Though the new facility will be small, it will help boost surgery numbers and ease the load on existing centres," a senior health official said. Tenders will be floated soon, and veterinary support from the animal husbandry department is also being considered. The civic body pays ₹1,650 per dog to a private agency for ABC operations—₹1,450 for the surgery and ₹200 for dog-catching, in line with AWBI guidelines. Extreme heat speeds up aging as much as smoking and alcohol consumption, reveals study

It has been known that extreme heat raises the risk of heat stroke, cardiovascular disease, kidney diseases and more. Any change in the environment can put pressure on the body and affect its functioning. However, there has been limited research on how environmental stressors influence aging. Now a study published in the journal Science Advances has explored how heat affects biological aging, leading to gradual deterioration of cells and tissues and increasing the risk of age-related diseases. They measured the participant's biological age using epigenetic clocks that capture DNA modification patterns that change with increasing age. Environmental factors can influence this regulation and change how genes function, thus affecting aging and disease risk over time. Here, the results stated that older adults residing in areas with frequent hot days presented significantly faster epigenetic aging compared to those who lived in cooler areas. This link between biological age and extreme heat remained constant after analysing various individual and community factors such as physical activity levels and socioeconomic status. Participants living in locations with at least 140 extreme heat days annually (classified as heat days exceeding the index of 90 degrees Fahrenheit), experienced up to 14 months of additional aging compared to those who lived in areas with fewer than 10 such days annually. A key note here is that extreme heat can speed up biological aging as much as smoking and heavy alcohol consumption.

Puri: At 65, Gajendra Prasad Sahu has become a quiet symbol of hope and devotion in Odisha. Diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021, Sahu endured the gruelling ordeal of chemotherapy, often overwhelmed by pain and uncertainty about his future. In his darkest moments, he turned to Lord Jagannath, praying for either healing or release. Then, in a remarkable turn of fate, while still undergoing treatment, Sahu received an unexpected call from the district administration: they invited him to paint the Bada Danda (Grand Road) for Rath Yatra.
