Soweto pupil killed: Two UJ students arrested
According to Power Park ward committee member Scebiso Masondo, five UJ students who had been drinking outside the Makentshe student accommodation residence got into an altercation with a group of pupils on Tuesday afternoon.
'Five UJ students were banned from entering their residential area because they wanted to consume alcohol, and it was against the residential area principles. So when their alcohol was finished, they wanted more.
'As the school bus was passing through [the area] they stopped it asking [the driver] to take them to the nearest tavern so they could buy their alcohol. But the pupils disagreed and said they wanted to go home. These five then began fighting with them, taking their hats [beanies] inside the bus,' said Masondo.
He said the bus driver managed to kick them out, closed the door and drove off. However, some of the pupils got off 3km away from the residence and went back to the students.
'They regrouped and went back to get their hats. That's when this boy [pupil] was beaten with a baseball bat and hit with empty beer bottles. He was then stabbed and his throat slit open,' said Masondo.
Lebogang Seale, senior manager at UJ strategic communications, confirmed that two of its students were being held in police custody in Soweto.
'The incident happened off campus at a privately-owned student accommodation establishment in the township. The incident is a subject of police investigations. UJ wishes to state on record that it condemns in the strongest terms possible any acts of violence and intimidation,' he said.
'The university will not hesitate to take immediate and strong action against any violation of its rules. The university conveys its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased learner.'

"We are exploring options with the department of social development and NGOs to provide relief or support to the families most affected, including those who have lost primary breadwinners. We also take seriously the vulnerabilities faced by foreign nationals on construction sites, many of whom work under exploitative or undocumented conditions." As political parties, it didn't help to abuse the situation for political gain, he added. George building collapse survivor Elelwani Mawela of Limpopo spoke about the sadness she experienced after the tragedy. Woman and toddler die as fire razes more than 120 houses in Durban's Kennedy Road settlement
A Durban woman and an 18-month-old toddler died in a fire at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in the early hours of Saturday. eThekwini municipality said fire and emergency services and disaster management teams responded to the fire shortly after midnight at the sprawling settlement. The inferno destroyed about 122 informal structures and displaced more than 150 residents. 'Tragically, two lives were lost, a middle-aged woman and an 18-month-old toddler, both suffering fatal third-degree burns. No further injuries have been reported at this time,' the municipality said. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated from open flames, possibly due to an unattended stove. KwaZulu-Natal co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has also dispatched disaster management teams and social partners to provide relief to the community. Buthelezi has urged communities to be vigilant when using fire to keep warm this weekend as the province faces cold temperatures and rains due to a cold front. 'We urge communities to exercise extreme caution, especially during colder days when the use of open flames, such as izimbawula and heaters, significantly increases the risk of fires,' he said. Five people gunned down at tavern in Olievenhoutbosch
Five people were gunned down in a tavern at Shoba informal settlement in Olievenhoutbosch in Centurion, south of Pretoria, on Friday evening. Police said the suspects stormed the tavern and 'started shooting randomly, without saying a word'. Police said two women and three men were killed by the assailants, while three other patrons were injured. Police said the 10 suspects fled the scene and are still at large. Investigations are under way. 'The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage. The police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder for investigation.'
