3rd person charged in connection with alleged fraud at Calgary non-profit
On Monday, Calgary police said they had charged Shawna Easthope with one count of fraud over $5,000 in relation to an ongoing investigation tied to the Bowness Ratepayers Scouts and Lions Hall.
Last week, Calgary police announced fraud charges against Nathan Mizera, 41, and Joshua Bredo, 40, after more than $66,000 was allegedly embezzled from the association.
Police said that in 2022, the pair became involved with the association and its hall, rebranding it as BowCommons and holding events under the name Discover Bowness.
The two men then assumed the positions of managing the daily operations, police said, and one appointed himself general manager "without election or consent from the board."
Police said board members contacted police in 2024 after they "became concerned with the maintenance and deterioration of the hall and the transparency of financial documents, which led to the discovery of a significant amount of missing funds." Police allege more than $66,000 was embezzled between 2022 and 2024.
Mizera and Bredo have filed a $3.5-million lawsuit against the police and the association, alleging corruption.
Now, police said that after further investigation, Easthope was also charged.
"It is believed the chairperson of Discover Bowness, the business name associated with events hosted at the Bowness Ratepayers Scouts and Lions Hall, later rebranded as BowCommons, directly benefited from and was complicit in fraudulent activity without reporting it to police," police said in a release.

Special Investigations Unit called in after man arrested at Brantford gas station

They were told a man was threatening people with a knife. During the arrest, an officer discharged an ARWEN and hit the 41-year-old man, but he was not seriously injured. ARWEN stands for Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield. It is a non-lethal firearm that can shoot impact batons, chemical irritant rounds and smoke munitions to subdue people. The SIU was called in because an ARWEN is considered a firearm. The SIU investigates all police situations that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

58,000 people attend Canada Day celebrations at LeBreton Flats

The main Canada Day party was at LeBreton Flats, with the popular noon show and evening show, along with fireworks to cap off the festivities. Canada Day celebrations were also held in neighbourhoods across Ottawa, including in Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Riverside South and Orléans. Canadian Heritage says 8,000 people visited Lebreton Flats for the noon show, and 58,000 people passed through the site during the day. 'Our people counters are telling us we had about 58,000 people that came through,' Melanie Brault, Canadian Heritage spokesperson, told Newstalk 580 CFRA's Ottawa at Work with Patricia Boal. 'Now, that doesn't account for all the folks at the Supreme Court lawn or folks on Parliament Hill. I don't have specific numbers for that, but I've seen photos, and as you mentioned, when the Snowbirds were flying over Parliament Hill was just packed with people.' Brault said 'we had a truly amazing day celebrating an amazing country.' The Ottawa Police Service says there were 'no major incidents' to report on Canada Day. Two people were arrested for public intoxication on July 1, and the Ottawa Police Marine, Dive and Trails officers arrested one person for impaired operation of a boat. Police brought in officers from other jurisdictions to assist with the operations on Canada Day. Some people complained that the main Canada Day events continue to be held at LeBreton Flats, and not on Parliament Hill, where construction has limited the space on the lawn. 'I, along with my team, would love nothing more to be back in the most iconic Canadian location, which is Parliament Hill with our beautiful Peace Tower as the backdrop,' Brault said. 'The issue is that, yes there is space on the lawn, but when you start adding all the infrastructure – like the stage and all of the set up that you need in order to run the event the size of Canada Day – there's no more grass left. That's the problem.' Brault said Canadian Heritage is working with Public Works and Procurement Canada, but it's not known when Canada Day celebrations could return to Parliament Hill. Canada Day events were held on Parliament Hill and the lawn of the Supreme Court of Canada on Tuesday.

Suspects wanted for vehicle theft Windsor police say they are looking for two suspects who were caught on video surveillance leaving a stolen vehicle downtown. Shortly after 9 a.m. on June 20, officers responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle in the 400 block of Ouellette Avenue. Officers completed a preliminary investigation and learned that the vehicle was stolen from a residence in the 1400 block of Elsmere Avenue. Police say two suspects were seen abandoning the vehicle on Ouellette before fleeing southbound towards Maiden Lane. The first suspect is described as a white man, approximately 30 years of age, with dark-coloured hair. Immediately following the incident, he wore a grey sweatshirt, black pants, glasses, and black boots. He was last seen carrying two black backpacks. The second suspect is described as a white woman, approximately 30 years of age, with blonde hair in a half-up hairstyle. Immediately following the incident, she wore a white sweatshirt, black pants, and white shoes.
