Laos strengthens teacher development to boost education
VIENTIANE: The Lao Ministry of Education and Sports continues its efforts to enhance professional development and improve teaching quality nationwide, aiming to drive educational progress and ensure equal access to learning opportunities for all.
The ministry, in partnership with the Australian government, held a consultation meeting in Lao capital Vientiane from Tuesday (June 3) to Wednesday (June 4) to review the draft guidelines for continuing professional development (CPD) for primary school teachers, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported on Wednesday (June 4).
During the meeting, participants offered constructive feedback to improve the draft guidelines and discussed strategies for effective implementation.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Dalavone Kittiphan highlighted the importance of enhancing teaching quality, stating that teachers are at the heart of education and that building their capacity remains a top priority for the ministry.
The CPD guidelines aim to establish a national framework for school-based professional development, outlining the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders to support effective implementation.
The Lao government has emphasised that education is essential for both individuals and communities, highlighting its vital role in shaping the nation's future.

With England set to face world champions Spain in the final on Sunday in Basel, Mills said -- win or lose -- her books are filling up for more Lionesses tattoos next week. "Football, especially women's football, really celebrates community and people's different ways of showing their style, whether it be fashion or tattoos, and celebrating community through individualism," Mills told Reuters. "And so, I think it's a really big crossover between people who love football and also love tattoos." The Australian, herself a "massive football fan", has also done tattoos in commemoration of Arsenal winning the women's Champions League earlier this year and England's victory at the 2022 Euros. "I just always loved designing tattoos that are around things people are super passionate about, and designing them in a way where people who want something a bit more simple or subtle or more feminine, and celebrate sport as well," she said. Mills' Euro 2025 tattoos are in collaboration with the Lionesses and creative agency This Fan Girl. An England supporter made headlines after he got an early "Euro 2024 Winners" tattoo before the men's final last year. England ended up losing to Spain. McIntosh romps to world 400m freestyle gold, Ledecky third
SINGAPORE: Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh obliterated her rivals to win the world 400m women's freestyle gold on Sunday, with American great Katie Ledecky third. The 18-year-old McIntosh romped home in 3min 56.26sec, nearly two seconds clear of China's Li Bingjie, who was followed by Ledecky in bronze. It was the world record holder's first world title in the event as she pursues five individual golds in Singapore. On the opening night of the meet, McIntosh and Ledecky, 28, renewed their rivalry from the Paris Olympics last summer. They will also meet in the 800m freestyle, billed as the most eagerly anticipated race of the championships. McIntosh took the lead early on and never looked back to demolish the rest of the field, pulling increasingly clear as the race progressed. McIntosh came to Singapore in red-hot form. She smashed the 400m freestyle world record at the Canadian trials in 3:54.18 in June. The three-time Olympic gold medallist sliced more than a second off the previous world record of 3:55.38 set by Australian Ariarne Titmus at the 2023 world championships. Olympic champion Titmus is not in Singapore because she is taking a season off before she dives back in to prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. McIntosh won gold in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m medley at the Paris Olympics. She took silver in the 400m free.
