China on Monday suffered a 3-0 defeat to South Korea in the opening match of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship.
The hosts displayed a stellar performance in Yongin despite missing key European-based players such as Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain.
The five-time champions opened the scoring after just eight minutes with their first shot attempt, as midfielder Lee Dong-gyeong found the top-left corner with a magnificent left-footed curve from outside the box.
South Korea continued to create chances and doubled the lead 13 minutes later when left-back Lee Tae-seok set up Joo Min-kyu for an easy header.
Defender Kim Ju-sung scored the third 10 minutes after the break, capitalising on a rebound from Park Seung-wook's header off a corner.
China created a few chances but couldn't break through, including Wei Shihao's freekick that sailed narrowly over the bar.
Hong Kong, China take on defending champions Japan in the tournament's next match on Tuesday.
The four teams play a round-robin format, with the winners determined by points.

Ryo Germain was the star for his country, scoring four of those goals. The 30-year-old Sanfrecce Hiroshima forward broke the deadlock just three minutes in with a spectacular left-footed volley. He completed his hat-trick at the 22nd minute from a beautiful team play that came with a sequence of one-touch passes, before scoring his fourth four minutes later to make it 5-0. Sho Inagaki was the other goal-scorer for Japan. Hong Kong, China scored a consolation after the break thanks to Matt Orr. Japan completed the scoring in stoppage time with a goal by Sota Nakamura. Japan and South Korea each had a win after the opening round of matches, ahead of China and the SAR. Hong Kong, China next face hosts South Korea on Friday.

Photo: RTHK Organisers of the upcoming National Games said on Tuesday that the governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have reached a consensus on how to co-host the Games in November. The head of the Games' organising committee, Huang Mingzhong, said officials have worked out ways to coordinate in areas such as border crossings, personnel and vehicle documentation and food safety. He said at a press conference in Guangzhou that officials of the three governments hold meetings every two months, with coordinators liaising on a daily basis. His deputy, Zhang Zhihua, says there are some 9,000 athletes who have to travel to other parts of the Greater Bay Area to compete and that special border-crossing arrangements have been made for them as well as spectators. "We have set up a special channel at the ports for participating delegations so they can enter and exit in groups with no delay," he said. "For spectators, we will also open a 'green channel', such that travel documents will be processed nationwide. "Once they have the tickets, their documents will be processed immediately." Spectators, Zhang said, will be able to move around quickly within the "one-hour living circle" in the Greater Bay Area. The Hong Kong official heading the SAR's National Games Coordination Office, Yeung Tak-keung, said his office is making minor improvements to the arrangements, after holding a series of test events here. Three-time National Games gold medallist, retired cyclist Wong Kam-po, said it was an honour for Hong Kong to receive Beijing's support in co-hosting the extravaganza. He said athletes taking part in the cross-border road race should find dealing with crosswinds challenging and hoped they could get their tactics right and achieve their best performance.

Photo: RTHK Triathletes from the SAR are vying for four final spots on the six-member squad for November's National Games, according to vice president of the Triathlon Association of Hong Kong, China Wan Shu-wah. The SAR will host triathlon, with races taking place at the Central Harbourfront and Victoria Harbour. Speaking to RTHK after an event on Tuesday, Wan said that so far only Asian Games medallists Bailee Brown and Wong Tsz-to have secured places in the SAR squad, which will comprise of three men and three women. He said the final team selection will be made after the Asia Triathlon Championships in Istanbul in late August. Wan, who's also a former SAR representative, expressed strong medal hopes for the National Games, saying the team will have the edge competing on home turf. 'The event will take place in the Central and Wan Chai areas. So of course we have advantage, as our athletes can train at the venue more often than the others,' he said. 'For the medal hopes, I think in the men's, women's and mixed team relays we have a chance to challenge the podium. Our main competitors will be Sichuan and Shandong.' Retired triathlete Daniel Lee secured the SAR's only National Games triathlon medal so far, winning bronze 16 years ago. Triathlon will be featured at the Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo at the Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 16 to 22. The event, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will also showcase emerging sports like e-dodgeball – a virtual reality version of dodgeball – as well as drone soccer – a team sport where players score by flying drones through their opponents' goal hoops. A tourism area, including an exhibition of 17 Japanese prefectures, will also be featured for the first time. Visitors can buy a ticket package which also grants them access to the World of Snacks expo and the Hong Kong Book Fair.
