Two firefighters and a member of public die as 'explosions heard' at ex-RAF base

Daily Record16-05-2025
Three people have died, including two firefighters with two more seriously injured, after a fire broke out at an ex-RAF base.
Two firefighters and a member of the public have died following a fire at a former RAF base.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Bicester Motion, a historic motoring and aviation centre situated on the former airbase, at around 6.39pm last night, sending ten crews to the scene of what they described as a "serious incident", reports the Mirror.

The deaths of the three people have been confirmed, with two more firefighters having been seriously injured, after the blaze in Bicester, Oxfordshire County Council said.

Oxfordshire County Council said in a statement: "Firefighters and Oxfordshire County Council colleagues are today mourning the loss of two firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while dealing with a major incident in Bicester on the evening of Thursday, 15 May.
"A member of the public also sadly died in the incident. Two further firefighters sustained serious injuries and are currently in hospital.
"Ten fire crews attended the incident at Bicester Motion having been called to the scene at 18:39. Four crews remain at the scene with the fire now under control."
Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall added: 'It is with a very heavy heart that we today report the loss of two of our firefighters. Families have been informed and are being supported. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times and we ask for privacy to be respected.
'We cannot release any details at present but will provide further information as soon as we can.'

The council said four crews remain at the scene as the blaze is now under control.
Kieran McGurk, a product director who lives opposite Bicester Motion, said he heard "multiple bangs" and saw a plume of smoke while out walking. It is believed the fire started at a hangar on the site in northern Bicester, off the A4421 Buckingham Road.

He told PA: "As we walked home and got closer to the smoke it seemed to get blacker and we heard the sirens.
"Multiple fire engines and police cars went past us and as we got to the corner at the bottom of the road ash started to fall and you could see the sheer scale of what was happening.
"Loud bangs have been constantly going off and multiple helicopters are still circling the site."

The fire service said last night: "We would advise people to avoid the area, and for local residents to remain indoors and shut all windows until further notice." Dozens of businesses in Oxfordshire will remain closed all weekend following a major fire on the former RAF base yesterday.
Before the deaths were confirmed, local councillor Sam Holland spoke about the fire at Bicester Motion - home to more than 50 specialist businesses focused on classic car restoration and engineering.

"I saw it (the fire) from a distance," Mr Holland told PA. "There's lots of emergency vehicles. Bicester Motion were meeting there earlier. I had spoken to someone as they were leaving. I hope there is nobody hurt or worse."
Historic England claim the iconic airfield is "the most complete and strongly representative example of an RAF airbase" in Britain.
Bicester Motion previously said in a statement: "Further to the incident, emergency services have been called and are attending on-site.
"We appreciate the concern from local residents and wish to communicate that the company is working with the emergency services. At their direction the site will be closed today and over the weekend. A further statement will be made as appropriate."
Roads have reopened in and around Bicester following the fire. Oxfordshire County Council wrote on X: "Roads have now reopened, and advice to remain indoors has been lifted. However, people should avoid the area and expect traffic delays in Bicester this morning."

Jenrick accuses Yusuf of ‘bulls**t' over Twitter post

Never mind uniting the right, there's more talk of fighting the right today as the feud between Tory MP Robert Jenrick and Reform's Zia Yusuf ramps up. Yusuf has spent this week pointing blame at Jenrick over the Ministry of Defence leak – but now Reform's head of DOGE is under fire after being caught liking a post that attacked Jenrick for having a Jewish wife. Dear oh dear… Yusuf was caught having liked a controversial post on Twitter after the account 'Enoch_Is_Right' shared a screen recording of the Reform man's interaction with the post. The tweet read: Reminder that Jenrick is a traitorous Zogbot with a Jewish wife and family. I'm sure it's unrelated that he imported infinite brown savages to rape our women and children. The word 'zogbot' is a derogatory term for a Zionist. Good heavens. The circulating clip has prompted calls for Reform to suspend its former chairman, who is now in charge of clamping down on waste in local council areas. Yusuf has since apologised for liking the post, writing on Twitter: One of the team who post to my X account accidentally pressed like on an awful antisemitic tweet earlier today. I apologise for this. The post also refers to 'brown savages', and is equally racist against me. Clearly it was not intentional. The amount of antisemitism and racism on this platform is spiralling out of control, and I hope that changes soon. But it's not won over Jenrick. The shadow justice secretary wasn't impressed by Yusuf's explanation, fuming: I call bulls**t. You've spent the last 48 hours calling me a 'traitor' for not drawing attention to a leaked spreadsheet with our special forces and MI6 officers' names on. ut we're meant to believe this tweet attacking me as a traitor for having a Jewish wife & family was liked 'accidentally' by 'one of the team.' You must think we're all thick. No. The mask has slipped. Likes are private. You thought nobody would ever know. Unfortunately for you, the racist account who posted the tweet and could see the likes exposed you. Reform should give you the boot. The gloves are coming off! It's not the first time Yusuf has found himself at the centre of controversy this week – after Rael Braverman, husband of Suella, quit Reform over the head of DOGE's attacks on the ex-Tory home secretary about the Afghan leak. Earlier today, Rael took to Twitter to clarify his reasons for leaving, writing: 'I left Reform because I cannot be in a party 'led' by Zia Yusuf.' Will Reform's leadership step in? French riot police in early morning clash with migrants in coastal town

Clashes broke out between French riot police and migrants in the early hours of the morning in a northern coastal town. Pictures and footage captured by the PA news agency shows a group throwing rocks from afar in the direction of the officers early on Friday, while small fires are alight in the road near a park in Gravelines. The scene between the men – two seen by PA wearing life jackets – and the Gendarmerie and Police Nationale officers, who were equipped with shields, helmets and tear gas, lasted for about 20 minutes at around 5.30am. It came after migrants were filmed running into the water and boarding a dinghy at Gravelines beach on Thursday morning. More than 22,500 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel so far in 2025, a record for this point in the year. Last week, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed a one in, one out migrant returns deal in a bid to crack down on the crossings and the people smuggling gangs who operate them. Sir Keir met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday where he also praised Berlin's plans to strengthen laws to disrupt small boat crossings by the end of the year.

Four face 2027 trial over alleged Palestine Action aircraft damage

Four people accused of plotting to damage two Voyager aircraft at RAF Brize Norton in a demonstration allegedly carried out by members of Palestine Action face trial in 2027. About £7 million worth of damage was caused to the aircraft at the airbase in Oxfordshire on June 20 in an incident alleged to have a 'terrorist connection', the Old Bailey heard. Amy Gardiner-Gibson, 29, Jony Cink, 24, Daniel Jeronymides-Norie, 36, and Lewis Chiaramello, 22, are charged with conspiracy to enter a prohibited place 'knowingly for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom', and conspiracy to commit criminal damage. It has previously been alleged the defendants had been heavily involved in Palestine Action at the time. On the same day they were charged, MPs backed the Government's move to ban the direct action group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. On Friday, the defendants appeared at the Old Bailey for a hearing to set a timetable for the case amid heightened security outside the central London court. The two female defendants appeared by video-link from Bronzefield jail with the two male defendants in the dock in court. Watched by members of the public in a packed public gallery, the defendants spoke only to confirm their identities. Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC said the case related to 'criminal damage to two aircraft at RAF Brize Norton in the early hours of June 20 which caused extensive damage to the aircraft'. He said the case was being heard in the terrorism list before Mrs Justice Cheema- Grubb, 'the prosecution submission being this case has a terrorist connection'. Mr Polnay said a provisional trial fixture of six to eight weeks had been identified from January 18 2027. He accepted that was 'obviously a considerable distance away' and there was uncertainty at this stage how long any trial would take. He added the length of the trial would depend on whether the defendants accepted being involved in the 'physical acts undoubtedly taken'. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said the 2027 trial date meant an 'inordinately long time' for the four young people to wait in custody. She said: 'The sooner the real issues in this case are identified the better for everyone, particularly in fixing the trial date.' The senior judge confirmed the 2027 trial date at the Old Bailey but said she would review it at a plea hearing on January 16 next year. Gardiner-Gibson, Jony Cink, both of no fixed address, Jeronymides-Norie, of Barnet, north London, and Chiaramello, of Brent, north London, were remanded into custody.
