A man is accused of murder Wayne Woodgate after he went missing on 17 October 2024
A man accused of murder said he strangled his victim out of anger because he held him responsible for getting him sent to jail, a jury has been told.
Wayne Woodgate, 54, was seen getting into a van in Tunbridge Wells in Kent after an altercation with Stephen Castle on 17 October last year, and his body was found six days later in a rural location in Peasmarsh, East Sussex.
A trial at Maidstone Crown Court was told that Mr Castle blamed Mr Woodgate for a police raid on his home several years earlier which ended with him going to prison.
Mr Castle, 59, of Kipping's Cross near Tunbridge Wells, admits manslaughter but denies murder.
A jury was told that, in a police interview after his arrest, Mr Castle said Mr Woodgate owed him money for a drug deal but had instead "grassed him up".
Mr Woodgate had been afraid of meeting him again, the trial heard, but they bumped into each other by chance in Tunbridge Wells.
The prosecution told the jury that Mr Castle had taken Mr Woodgate in the van to his home address and, when the two were alone, strangled and killed him.
'Scared'
The court heard how a bystander called 999 as was concerned about seeing Mr Castle swearing at Mr Woodgate and that it did not look like the victim had much choice but to get in the vehicle.
Prosecutors said Mr Woodgate's son, Joseph, had driven to Tunbridge Wells to collect his father and that it looked like he had been "scared" while speaking to Mr Castle.
Joseph Woodgate was watching the exchange through his rear-view mirror and then glanced down to his mobile phone. When he looked back up both his father and Mr Castle were gone, the court heard.
Mr Woodgate's son explained that he then called his father who said: "I've got to go and see somebody, they've told me to turn my phone off."
No further phone calls were picked up, the jury was told.
Mr Castle was arrested just before 20:00 BST the same day on suspicion of kidnapping.
The defendant later told police Mr Woodgate was safe when he had dropped him off earlier.
Prosecutors say Mr Castle then went back to conceal Mr Woodgate's body further in undergrowth after he was released on police bail.
The trial continues.

Schoolboy who stabbed fellow pupil to death suffered abuse at home, trial told
A schoolboy who stabbed a fellow pupil to death during their lunch break had suffered 'physical and emotional abuse' at home, a court heard. The 15-year-old is on trial accused of murdering Harvey Willgoose, also 15, who was killed at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield on February 3. On Wednesday, Sheffield Crown Court heard two consultant forensic psychiatrists agreed that there was 'evidence of physical and emotional abuse and neglect in (the defendant's) home life, including lack of food and excessive physical chastisement'. In a list of agreed facts read to the jury by junior defence counsel Richard Holland, the psychiatrists said his 'oppositional behaviour and defiance' was more obvious in school. They said that if he had had 'appropriate boundaries and discipline' he would have better emotional regulation, and that incidents of aggression in the weeks and months before the alleged murder were 'examples of his difficulties in controlling his emotions, including anger'. Mr Holland said another report by two psychologists found the defendant's below average levels of verbal comprehension were because of his 'adverse early experiences rather than a neurodevelopmental disorder'. The court also heard a copy of Harvey's school timetable was found in the defendant's bedroom, and that only a member of staff or Harvey would have been able to print it off. A jury has heard that the defendant, who cannot be named, has admitted manslaughter but denies murder. He has also admitted possession of a knife on school premises. Addressing the jury at the beginning of the trial, Gul Nawaz Hussain KC, defending, said: '(The defendant) did not set out to kill or seriously hurt anyone. 'The defence say (the defendant's) actions that day were the end result of a long period of bullying, poor treatment and violence, things that built one upon another until he lost control and did tragically what we've all seen.' The trial continues.

Murder rocks peaceful Maryland suburb after wife, 50, realized 'big hearted' husband, 53, 'was having AFFAIR'
A woman fatally gunned down her husband inside their Maryland home after allegedly finding text messages that indicated he was having an affair. Nicole Lanett Ward, 50, is charged with the murder of her husband Damian Ward, 53, after the couple got into an argument inside their Bowie home on July 19. Charging documents seen by Fox5 said that Ward told officers, who arrived on the scene, that she found a second phone belonging to her husband. On the device, she 'found photos and messages indicating that the decedent was having an extramarital affair with another woman,' according to the documents. She told officers that after finding the phone, she told her husband to 'pack his bags and leave the house'. The document added that the two continued to argue, before police say she pulled out a .357 Magnum revolver and shot him in the head. Neighbors who spoke with the outlet described Damian as a 'big, friendly guy, with an even bigger heart', while adding that the couple seemed happily married. According to the Maryland Judiciary, Ward is facing charges of first and second degree murder, assault in the first and second degree, reckless endangerment and the use of a firearm in a felony. Damian's father Greg shared a tribute to his son on social media, seemingly alluding to the alleged affair. He wrote: 'It has been a tremendous week navigating through this loss. My heart is truly broken, as he was a wonderful son (not without his faults). 'Still a great man. I will miss the family cookouts, the laughter, the fellowship, and our cigar and bourbon time. He will never be forgotten and will always be in my heart.' According to a fundraiser also organized by his father, Damian has a young daughter. Images on his social media show him and Nicole with the child. Friend Gilberto Frederick also posted a touching tribute to Damian, describing him as a 'gentle giant'. He said: 'Damian always had my back, no matter what. He was like that with everyone he loved. 'He was a gentle giant, for the most part. He was a big guy, but he had an even bigger heart. I will miss him tremendously. Rest in Peace, Damian. I love you, man.' In a statement Prince George's County Police Department said: 'The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit charged a suspect with fatally shooting her husband inside of their home on Saturday. 'The victim is 53-year-old Damian Ward of Bowie. The suspect is 50-year-old Nicole Lanett Ward.' It added: 'On July 19, 2025, at approximately 1:45 am, officers were dispatched to the couple's home in the 13200 block of Old Chapel Road in the unincorporated section of Bowie. 'Officers located the victim inside suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. 'The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect shot the victim during an argument. 'Nicole Ward is charged with first and second degree murder and related charges. She's in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.' Court records indicate that Ward is next expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next month.

Mystery as decapitated body found lying in the street in centre of Lisbon – and police can't find the head
A DECAPITATED body has been found lying in the middle of the street in the centre of Lisbon. The headless man was found this morning in the centre of the Portuguese capital. 1 Shockingly, a police source said the man's head is "not at the scene" and they are still trying to find it. The corpse was found on Patio Salema, a narrow, dead-end street in the historic centre of the popular British holiday destination. Officers found the body at around 6.45am and the street remains closed while cops investigate. Bizarrely, just hours earlier the body of a woman was found in the boot of a car nearby. The woman in her 50s was discovered in Costa da Caparica on the outskirts of the capital. The car's owner is not known and police have started a murder inquiry.
