Spider-Punk Is Getting His Own Animated Movie

Spider-Punk Is Getting His Own Animated Movie

Gizmodo3 hours ago
Spider-Man Day 2025 has come and gone, bringing some nuggets about Tom Holland's live-action return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day next year. But today brings news of a Spider-Man movie we're actually even more excited about: a standalone animated movie centered around Spider-Punk, co-written by Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced the character in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Deadline broke the news of the Oscar-winning actor's new project (lately, all his headlines have been regarding that bizarre yet intriguing Barney movie he's got in the works), which is said to be 'in early development.' Kaluuya would co-write with Ajon Singh; 'plot details are under wraps, and there are no other deals in place at this time.' It's also not confirmed that Kaluuya would voice the character, but you have to assume that's in the cards.
Spider-Punk has been around since 2015's The Amazing Spider-Man #10, when he was created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel for a Spider-Verse comics crossover. As the trade reminds us, Hobie Brown is 'a version of Spider-Man who leans into a more anarchistic, anti-establishment attitude than Peter Parker's version. Residing on Earth-138, the character is fueled by his desire to help take down corrupt systems.'
A Spider-Punk movie sounds like just the Spider-Movie we need right now, in other words. What do you think of this news?

‘Ketamine Queen' accused of selling Matthew Perry fatal dose gets trial date

A woman charged with selling actor Matthew Perry the dose of ketamine that killed him is headed for a September trial. Jasveen Sangha's trial — the only one forthcoming in the death of the Friends star after four other defendants reached plea agreements with prosecutors — is now set to begin on September 23 after an order on Tuesday from a judge in Los Angeles. The 42-year-old Sangha, who prosecutors say was known to her customers as the Ketamine Queen, is charged with five counts of ketamine distribution, including one count of distribution resulting in death. She has pleaded not guilty and has been held in custody since her arrest last year. Her trial had been scheduled to start August 19, but the judge postponed it for the fourth time since her April 2024 indictment after both sides agreed it should be moved. Sangha's lawyers said they needed the time to go through the huge amount of evidence they have received from the prosecution and to finish their own investigation. Sangha was one of the two biggest targets in the investigation of Perry's death, along with Dr Salvador Plasencia, who pleaded guilty to ketamine distribution last month. Perry's personal assistant, his friend and another doctor also entered guilty pleas and are co-operating with prosecutors. All are awaiting sentencing. Perry, who was found dead at age 54 at his home on October 23 2023, had been getting ketamine from his regular doctor for treatment of depression, an increasingly common off-label use for the surgical anaesthetic. But prosecutors say when the doctor would not give Perry as much as he wanted, he illegally sought more from Plasencia, then still more from Sangha, who they say presented herself as 'a celebrity drug dealer with high quality goods'. Perry's assistant and friend said in their plea agreements that they acted as middlemen to buy large amounts of ketamine for Perry from Sangha, including 25 vials for 6,000 dollars in cash a few days before his death. Prosecutors allege that included the doses that killed Perry.

Disney Originally Planned On Using an A.I. Deepfake of Dwayne Johnson for Part of His Reprisal as Maui in Live-Action MOANA — GeekTyrant

Disney is moving forward with another live-action film, hoping to make a hit summer blockbuster with Moana , the story of the title princess who decides to set out on the ocean in the hopes of breaking the curse incurred by the demigod Maui. Dwayne Johnson is returning to the role of Maui, but the busy actor was originally only going to shoot a handful of his scenes, with his role subsidized by his cousin and an advanced A.I. program. In a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, it was revealed that the studio came up with a plan that included Johnson's similarly built cousin, Tanoai Reed—who is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds. Reed would fill in as a body double for a small number of shots. Disney would work with AI company Metaphysic to create deepfakes of Johnson's face that could be layered on top of Reed's performance in the footage—a 'digital double' that effectively allowed Johnson to be in two places at once. Johnson approved the plan, but the use of the new technology had Disney attorneys pouring over all the details about how it could be deployed, what security precautions would protect the data and a host of other concerns. They also worried that the studio ultimately couldn't claim ownership over every element of the film if AI generated parts of it, people involved in the negotiations said. Disney and Metaphysic spent 18 months negotiating on and off over the terms of the contract and work on the digital double. But none of the footage will be in the final film when it's released next summer. Ultimately, the executives and creatives could not come to a place in which a resolution could be reached with every question answered and everyone feeling comfortable. A.I. tech is certainly in our future, but there are still a lot of details to be ironed out before major studios are willing to take the plunge in its usage. The report goes on to say that for Disney, protecting its characters and stories while also embracing new AI technology is key. 'We have been around for 100 years and we intend to be around for the next 100 years,' said the company's legal chief, Horacio Gutierrez, in an interview. 'AI will be transformative, but it doesn't need to be lawless.' Moana is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
