Emergency summit call for threatened Perth air training facility

Emergency summit call for threatened Perth air training facility

Daily Record23-05-2025
It comes as administrator says no suitable offer has been made for the Perth Airport based business.
A call was made this week for an emergency summit to save jobs and courses at Perth's Air Service Training (AST) facility.
It comes as the administrator, appointed early April, said no suitable offer had been made for the business - despite interest from 51 parties.

Assets are to be sold and it is understood staff have been laid off.

The wholly-owned subsidiary of UHI Perth based at the city's airport employed 28 people and had trained 190,000 engineers and pilots from around 150 countries since it was set up in 1931.
When AST courses ceased immediately last month – with the exception of the BSc in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Management programme set to continue until the end of the academic year – the situation was described as devastating by Perth MP Pete Wishart.
Last week, UHI Perth principal and chief executive Dr Margaret Cook resigned amid what was said to be 'an extremely challenging financial landscape.'
Perthshire Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser had suggested that £8.1m earmarked in 2020 for a Perth College Aviation Academy for Scotland (AAS) plan, under Tay Cities regional UK and Scottish government funding, could be used to restore cancelled courses.
The plans envisaged 540 training places over the first four years of operation.
Mr Fraser wrote to Scottish Government Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes this week to call for an emergency summit on how money can best be used to save AST jobs and training courses.

Recent developments, like the resignation of UHI principal, he said, meant the future of aviation training in Tayside is more uncertain than ever.
Mr Fraser added: 'I believe an emergency summit on how this money can be best used to save both the jobs and training courses which previously existed at AST, must be urgently arranged.
'The summit, which would include senior figures from both the Scottish and UK Governments, Perth and Kinross Council, UHI Perth and key stakeholders from Scotland's aviation sector, would discuss options on the best way forward on this issue.

'Holding a summit would see us working together to ensure that Tayside can continue providing world-class aviation engineering training for young people across Scotland.'
AST administrator Shona Campbell of Henderson Loggie said this week: 'Despite interest from 51 parties, no suitable offer was received for the purchase of the business as a whole.
'As a result, an online auction of Air Service Training (Engineering) Limited's physical assets is now live and will close at 11am on Wednesday May 28, 2025.

'We remain committed to supporting students, ensuring they can complete their courses and receive certification for completed exams.'
A Scottish Government spokesperson said yesterday (Thursday): 'Air Service Training was a partner in a wider investment proposal for an Aviation Academy which secured £8.1 million of capital funding from the Tay Cities Region Deal.
'We have been clear this funding will not be lost to the region and we will continue to work with regional partners and the UK Government to explore other viable delivery options.
'It is welcome that UHI Perth has provided funding to ensure that current Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Management students can complete this academic year, and that work is continuing with alternative providers to identify longer term options for existing students to complete their qualifications.'

New Scottish left wing party to be set up after Corbyn announcement

It comes after former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed plans to form a new party earlier this week. He is set to be joined by Zarah Sultana, a suspended Labour MP who quit the party earlier this week, saying she would "co-lead the founding of a new party" with the ex-Labour leader. Corbyn did not directly confirm he would be co-leading with Sultana, instead saying that "discussions are ongoing" and that he was "delighted" that Sultana "will help us build a real alternative". (Image: Stefan Rousseau/PA) After Sultana's announcement, Govanhill writer and poet Jim Monaghan wrote on Twitter/X that he is part of the "interim Scottish Secretariat" of the group. He later went on to clarify that he is part of the working group in Scotland which has been working in Scotland and UK-wide to prepare for the new party. Monaghan is one of several figures to have shared a statement by Collective Scotland on Saturday evening, which indicated the group is looking to build "a full-fledged electoral alliance of the Scottish left" to run in next year's election. The statement did not mention the Islington North MP directly, but said that "as the left across Britain comes together to form a new political party, the Scottish left now has a similar opportunity to unite". It added: "With the SNP stagnant after 18 years of government, with the Labour party a hollow shell of itself, and the looming threat of Reform and the far-right, the time is ripe for a new progressive, left-wing consensus to form in Scotland. "Collective Scotland is already engaged in discussions towards a conference of progressives and socialists to take place on October 4th in Glasgow. We invite all those groups and parties not already engaged in this project to join us. "At that conference, we will look to build a full-fledged electoral alliance of the Scottish left to run in the 2026 Scottish parliament elections, and build towards longer-term campaigns in our local communities for the 2027 Scottish local elections. "In partnership with our left allies, we will seek to present a programme which takes away greed and personal enrichment from Scotland's political structures, and gives renewal to our local public services and democracy." We want to be more than just an electoral alliance for Scotland's left; we want to be the link to a wider progressive social movement. "We look forward now, as an autonomous party of Scotland's progressives and socialists, to the coalition and partnerships we must build for all of Scotland's left to succeed, not just as a set of parties, but as a wider movement." Other figures to have shared the statement include pro-independence outlet Bella Caledonia and the Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.

Scotland's housing crisis: Labour blast SNP for lack of housing plan

In Scotland, there are currently over ten thousand children stuck in temporary accommodation, the highest since records began, and over 250,000 people stuck on social housing waiting lists. During a sit-down interview with The Herald, Ms McAllan said she would introduce an "enhanced and expedited" plan to "step up" action to tackle the housing crisis in Scotland after the Scottish Parliament Summer recess. The newly-appointed housing secretary was not yet able to reveal what those plans were. Ms McAllan said: 'I can't tell you today exactly what my plan is, but I do intend to set out a plan as soon as I can with some enhanced and expedited action which will respond, as I see it, in an emergency fashion." Scottish Labour's housing spokesperson, Mark Griffin MSP said, following the paper's recent interview, it appeared as though the SNP did not have a plan to address the crisis. READ MORE: Scotland's Housing Crisis: McAllan to deliver emergency plan Housing secretary feels 'personal weight' to prioritise children Mr Griffin said: 'It is hugely concerning that despite the housing emergency being declared over a year ago, SNP ministers still do not appear to have any plan to tackle this crisis. 'It's clear that this SNP government is out of ideas and running out of time. After nearly two decades, we have 250,000 people on social housing waiting lists, and it is heart-breaking that over 10,000 children are stuck in temporary accommodation. 'A Scottish Labour government will turn the page on SNP failure and tackle the housing emergency once and for all by reforming planning, boosting housebuilding and delivering fair funding for local government and affordable housing.' Speaking about a timeline for a plan from the Scottish Government, Ms McAllan said parliament would need to be back so that MSPs can scrutinise any proposals. When asked if this plan will include more investment, the housing secretary said the capital position in Scotland is 'very difficult' at the moment. The expected post-Scottish Parliamentary recess plan comes as house building numbers in Scotland are plummeting, with nearly 4,000 fewer homes in supply in 2023-24 compared to the year before. Ms McAlllan said these figures are 'concerning' but insisted they do not present an 'unbridgeable gap'. The cabinet secretary said: 'The stats that we have had on the all ten year builds, they showed an 11% decrease in starts, and a four per cent decrease in completions and that is of course the wrong direction, particularly when we have such high demands but it is not insurmountable.' In 2021, the SNP set themselves a task to build 110,000 affordable homes by 2032. Opposition parties and the outgoing chief executive of the Scottish Federation of Housing Association have said they will fail to meet this target. The cabinet secretary, however, said she believes they can meet this target and she intends not to rollback on it. Ms McAllan said the 'core' of action to tackle house building would be the Affordable Housing Supply Programme which the government is investing £768 million this year. The housing secretary said she is told this will translate into 8,000 affordable homes. Other levers being explored by the Scottish Government to tackle the crisis include converting temporary homes to permanent ones, attempting to "unlock" stalled housing developments and hiring more empty homes officers.

Rangers signings are Championship dross while Celtic go backwards as Hotline flamethrower burns the big two

It's been a busy start to the transfer window for Rangers and Celtic with both clubs making early moves. But one unbiased Hotline caller reckons both clubs have been off their trollies in the summer shopping spree – with Rangers signing duds and Celtic in reverse. Jim McClean, Rothesay, said: 'At the moment I am glad I don't support Rangers or Celtic. Rangers are signing dross and loans once again and getting rid of better players they are signing. 'As for Celtic, they are only content to build up the biscuit tin again no wonder the fans are cracking up as they haven't signed one decent player apart from Tierney. 'Celtic are resting on their laurels once again, and they are going backwards.' There are not many tears among Celtic fans over the departure of Nicholas Kuhn to Como. Instead, Hoops fans reckon they are laughing all the way to the bank with around £17m on the way for the German winger. Liam Birney, Paisley, said: 'You have to laugh at the ridiculous and embarrassing comment from Carl McCoy in Saturday's Hotline saying Nicolas Kuhn was a failure in Scotland. 'Is he referring to the same winger who scored 18 goals and had 12 assists from 38 appearances (6 as a sub) in the season just past? "No other winger in Scotland got near those stats. But the un-real McCoy knows better than the Serie A side who paid over £17m for him! The jealousy is evident.' Scott McAdam, Glasgow, said: 'I remember a while back callers laughing about Celtic getting £15m for Kuhn. Well those laughs must have turned to tears because it's £17m. "What a bit of business by the champions again. These guys just open their gubs and their bellies rumble.' Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: 'For Celtic seemingly close to receiving £17m for a player who downed tools at the latter part of the season and clearly didn't want to be here any more is an astonishing piece of business. 'And with Rangers holding out for a paltry £5m for their top goalscorer and bringing in players from Peterborough and Luton indicating once again there won't be a title race this season.' As for Gers signings, boss Russell Martin has been plundering the English market. And Rab Picken, London, said: 'Living in England and seeing a lot of Championship games, I can assure the callers Celtic players wouldn't get on the bench in many of the teams. 'With free signings like serial chocolate soldier Kieran Tierney and the 19-year-old Fulham reserve player Callum Osmand, I don't think Russell and Rangers have much to worry about.' One Gers fan is not worried about the league the signings are coming from, more the nationalities. Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: 'Will Martin's foreign players know what it really means to play for Rangers? I doubt it. 'It's like Martin wants to turn Gers into the Foreign Legion. In days past, Souness and Smith's successful teams always had a Scottish core. 'I'm old enough to remember Rangers' greatest XI of all home grown – Greig, Brand, Henderson, Baxter just to name a few. They won trophy after trophy."
