'Identical views on all strategic issues': Russia warns US against anti-North Korea alliance; Kim Jong Un backs war in Ukraine

Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov visited North Korea on Saturday, and warned the United States, South Korea, and Japan against forming a security alliance aimed at Moscow's ally.
Lavrov met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, delivering greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the meeting, Kim reaffirmed North Korea's full support for Russia's war in Ukraine, saying both Moscow and Pyongyang shared 'identical views on all strategic issues in conformity with the level of alliance,' according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Lavrov also called for greater 'strategic and tactical cooperation' between Russia and North Korea, and highlighted their alignment on international affairs. He also accused the US, South Korea, and Japan of escalating military pressure on North Korea.
'We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia,' he said, according to Russia's state Tass news agency.

Lavrov's remarks come as the US, South Korea, and Japan ramped up joint military drills in response to North Korea's expanding nuclear program. Just days earlier, the three allies held a joint air exercise near the Korean Peninsula involving US nuclear-capable bombers.
North Korea views such exercises as rehearsals for invasion and insists its nuclear weapons are necessary for self-defense. Lavrov backed that stance, saying Russia understands Pyongyang's reasoning.
'The technologies used by North Korea are the result of the work of its own scientists. We respect its aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing nuclear development,' Lavrov said.
During separate talks, with his counterpart Choe Son Hui, Lavrov thanked North Korea for what he said was its contribution during a Ukrainian attack on Russia's Kursk region.
The meeting was held in Wonsan, where North Korea recently unveiled a large beach resort as part of efforts to boost tourism. Lavrov said he hopes Russian tourists will begin visiting the area and pledged to support increased travel through improved air connections.

Taliban Calling

Times of India's Edit Page team comprises senior journalists with wide-ranging interests who debate and opine on the news and issues of the day. The extremist regime wants tourists. Why shouldn't it? It's part of the normalisation of brutality Kim Jong Un last month posed on a beach, surfing on the 'wave of happiness' that North Korea's Dear Leader has promised tourists visiting the newly developed Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist zone. The dictator wants more international tourists. So far, small Russian groups are the only package deal North Korea receives. This month, it's Taliban's turn to invite tourists to Afghanistan. Wonsan Kalma and Afghanistan are beautiful places. But they are not on tourists maps for good reason. Taliban's ad is made by a tour operator. It starts with a familiar chilling scene of beheadings: men, heads covered, kneeling in front of gun-wielding, presumably, Afghans. Only here, the headcover is yanked off to reveal a grinny White male flashing a thumbs-up sign. A flower tucked in the barrel of a machine gun, a close-up of an M4 rifle with 'property of US govt' etched, the 50-second ad flits between making light of Taliban as people who terrorised to stunning footage of Afghanistan. It is as extraordinarily tone-deaf as many of Trump's Truth Social posts. Taliban meanwhile is intensifying its war against Afghan women. Banned from work and education, they're publicly flogged, refused healthcare unless a male relative's present, and their movement is fully restricted. Heavily sanctioned Taliban wants tourists to earn some hard cash. But to make a beheading scene part of a promotion targeted at Americans is a cold measure of how normalised brutality is. Will Americans go, though their govt says don't? Undoubtedly. Indifference to violence is global culture, the unthinkable is routinely normalised. So, for a certain section, what could thrill more than swinging an M4 or Kalashnikov at Afghanistan's majestic peaks? Reality and rights & wrongs can take a vacation. Higher compensation for protesting farmers likely, says industries minister Patil

Bengaluru: In a move to quell protests, industries minister MB Patil Sunday said the govt will announce a higher compensation package for the 1,777 acres of land that was notified for a defence and aerospace park in Channarayapatna hobli, Devanahalli taluk. The land acquisition process has sparked vociferous opposition, with prominent voices such as actor Prakash Raj publicly backing protesting farmers in Devanahalli. Patil told reporters that a key meeting scheduled for Tuesday with chief minister Siddaramaiah will determine the govt's final decision on the matter. "In a democracy, farmers have the right to protest land acquisition," Patil said. "But the govt will also try and take everyone along. The CM will take a final decision on Tuesday. We expect him to announce a higher compensation or share in developed land for every acre of land acquired," added Patil, suggesting the govt remains committed to moving forward with the project. Patil also took aim at certain activists and intellectuals who have supported farmers' protests, revealing that "one" of them had previously approached the govt seeking help with land conversion for 400 acres of own land. "A person who does not have land or stakes in the protest, is not an important person; it is the farmer who owns the land who is important," Patil said. "We will not force anyone. I know the facts of the case and those who are protesting the acquisition. We will discuss the entire thing once again on Tuesday and the CM will announce his final decision."

CB Gupta laid foundation for present administrative system: Rajnath

1 2 3 Lucknow: Paying tribute to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Bhanu Gupta, defence minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that he laid the foundation of the present administrative system and introduced a tradition of service in politics. Singh unveiled a commemorative postage stamp in his honour and said that the stamp would inspire future generations and honor not just his name but the values he stood for — service, simplicity, and integrity. Singh emphasized Uttar Pradesh's central role in shaping Indian politics. "It is often said that the road to Delhi passes through Uttar Pradesh. This land gave India its first Prime Minister and elected its first woman Chief Minister. It has given direction to the entire nation," he said. Singh highlighted Gupta's contributions to post-independence governance. He served in the cabinets of UP's first two Chief Ministers — Pant and Sampurnanand — and held the CM's post three times. On his first day in office, Gupta reduced ministerial salaries and allowances to promote frugality and reduce govt expenditure. Singh shared how Gupta responded to a protest involving 10,000 people — including Chandra Shekhar who went on to become the PM — by arranging food for all demonstrators. "This act exemplifies his respect for democratic values and even his opponents," Singh said. "Power is not about privilege — it is about responsibility, sacrifice, and serving the public." "Gupta's humility and respect extended across political lines. He treated both allies and adversaries with dignity. He believed political disagreements should never turn into personal hostility," he added. "He played a key role in establishing institutions like a homeopathic hospital and a children's museum in Lucknow. He believed education was essential for progress and promoted hostels, schools, and libraries," he said. "At the time of his death, he had only Rs 10,000 in his account — a testament to his selfless life," Singh said. "Gupta was more than a leader — he was a true public servant," Singh said.
