I'm confused. And I bet you are also.
Launched in May 2020, HBO Max did what any logical marketer would do. It had HBO in the title to accentuate the HBO brand, which for the new streaming service included content from HBO, Warner Bros., and other WarnerMedia properties. Wouldn't you want to be affiliated with the HBO?
Then, in 2023, following the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc., the service was rebranded as simply Max for reasons unknown to this writer or anyone else.
Now, the streaming service's website and mobile apps display the HBO Max branding once again. Max.com redirects to hbomax.com, while both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store have updated their listings. The change, perhaps, is driven by Warner Bros. Discovery's recognition of the value of the HBO brand and a desire to refocus on high-quality content, rather than trying to compete on sheer volume of content. But is it beneficial to mess with the heads of the consumers who don't know what to call this?
Historically, changing the name of a platform typically has no impact. Remember when ABC Family became Freeform? Or Sci-Fi Channel became Syfy? Or, deep breath, Nashville Network (TNN) to The New TNN to Spike TV to Spike to Paramount Network?
In June, meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery announced it was splitting into two companies. The first the HBO Max streaming service and Warner Bros. movie studio; and the second consists of the TV networks, including CNN, HGTV, TBS, truTV and TNT. This move, which is expected to be completed in 2026, is intended to address the declining linear cable networks and focus on the growth potential of streaming and studio operations.

Actor Gary Busey pleads guilty to sexual offence at horror convention
Actor Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to a sexual offence stemming from an appearance at a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, according to his representatives and court records. The 81-year-old Buddy Holly star's manager, Ron Sampson, said in an email on Friday that the actor admitted to touching a woman's buttocks 'over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op'. Busey entered a guilty plea to a single count of criminal sexual contact during a virtual hearing in state court in Camden on Thursday. The actor had been accused of inappropriately touching at least three women at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, a South Jersey town and suburb of Philadelphia. Organisers of the event acknowledged at the time that an unnamed celebrity guest was 'removed from the convention and instructed not to return' and that affected attendees were encouraged to contact police. Busey had been scheduled as a featured guest for all three days of the event. He was initially charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment. Busey's lawyer Blair Zwillman confirmed on Friday that the other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The actor faces up to five years' probation and fines when he is sentenced September 18. 'In my view Mr Busey was 'overcharged' probably based on his star status,' Mr Zwillman said in an email. 'He could have just as easily been charged with the disorderly persons offence of harassment by 'offensive touching'.' Camden County prosecutors did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Friday. Busey is widely known as a character actor, largely in supporting roles, though he came to attention and was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for playing the title role in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story.

In a letter posted to social media, creator Michael Patrick King wrote of its demise. 'Sarah Jessica Parker and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the word 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season.' It went from appointment television to checklist TV. Critics hated it. This season was less invested in the identity aspect, which made their paint by numbers approach all the more glaring. There was no substance underneath the hood. In season 3, Parker's Carrie Bradshaw takes a stab at historical fiction. She meets her biographer neighbor who is meant to be a Ron Chernow-like figure. An overbearing Charlotte York deals with her husband's cancer diagnosis, real estate maven Seema Patel has to give up her chauffeured car after getting shafted by Ryan Serhant, while filmmaker Lisa Rodd Wexley flirts with a coworker. Miranda sleeps with a closeted nun played by Rosie O'Donnell and is once again gratuitously naked — an unsightly throughline. In other words, it should have come with a trigger warning. 6 The original 'Sex and the City' cast wore stylish but relatively relatable clothing. Moviestore/Shutterstock Then there was the fashion. In the original series stylist Patricia Field expertly molded four archetypes, setting real life trends and turning luxury labels like Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo into household names while Carrie's Fendi Baguette became an 'It' bag. Carrie was eclectic and cool, the others chic and polished. This latest version, the women aren't wearing clothing as much as they are ridiculous costumes. In one scene, Carrie struts around Central Park in a giant Holly Hobbie hat and matching prairie dress. Ditto for Lisa and Charlotte, who always look like Bergdorf mannequins — even at school drop off. No one in New York dresses like this. The original sold a Cosmo-soaked version of New York City where friendships were unbreakable, sex was plenty and the air was optimistic.
