Much-loved independent fashion retailer launches closing down sale ahead of shutting down in weeks

A BELOVED clothing store that has been in business for nearly 50 years has launched a massive sale ahead of its closure.
Ginger, in Norwich, will shut for good on June 7 after the owners were forced to make an "incredibly difficult decision".

The shop was founded by David and Rodger Kingsley in 1978 following the success of their sister company Jonathan Trumbull in 1971.
Beckie Kingsley broke the sad news on social media that her family's shop was soon to be no more.
The store manager blamed the current economic climate and the aftermath of Covid-19 for the business's hardship.
"It's with truly heavy hearts that, after 46 unforgettable years, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close the doors at our beautiful, beloved and historic Timber Hill home.
"We've weathered many storms over the decades, but there's been ongoing challenges of today's financial climate - coupled with the lasting impact and huge shifts within the retail landscape since Covid.
"This led us to ask - does it still work for us? After deep reflection, the answer, sadly, is no.
"We've had the privilege of watching generations grow, celebrating precious life milestones, sharing joys and deepest sorrows.
"Being part of people's stories has been beyond a privilege - more than some may ever know.
"They've always been more than just customers - they've become wonderful friends."
Ginger is one of the city's oldest businesses and loyal customers rushed to share their praise.
"You will be missed! Sending hugs," one wrote.
Another commented with a sad face emoji.
Dozens of shops are set to close across the country before the end of the month in the latest blow to UK high streets.
One of these include Smiggle, known for its colourful, quirky pens, lunchboxes and school bags, which revealed it is shutting up shop at the Darwin Centre in Shrewsbury.
Meanwhile, family business B.D Price, a beloved toy and bike store in Dudley, West Midlands, announced its closure after 160 years.
The 84-year-old owner blamed the cost of living crisis for a drop in sales and the costs of running the business skyrocketing.
Rising living costs leaving shoppers with less cash to spend and an increase in online shopping have battered retailers in recent years.
In some cases, landlords are either unwilling or unable to invest in keeping shops open, further speeding up the closures.
Smiggle isn't the only stationary shop shutting its doors, more WHSmiths stores are set to close this month.
Sports Direct axed its Newmarket Road store in Cambridge on April 18 while Red Menswear in Chatham in Medway, Kent, shut for the final time on March 29 after selling men's clothing since 1999.
RETAIL PAIN IN 2025
The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.
Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April.
A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.
Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.
The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.
It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.
Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025."
Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.
"By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Running in parallel with Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariff horror has been the President's furious and uncouth attacks on America's independent central bank. Trump makes little secret of his contempt for current chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jay Powell, even though he nominated him for the job in his first term. Powell has refused to be a White House cipher, standing firm against Trump's unrelenting campaign to cut the US's key federal funds interest rate from the current 4.25 per cent to 4.5 per cent range. The Fed chairman's obduracy remains intact despite last week's dissent by two Trumpian choices as Fed interest rate-setters. Events across the Atlantic appear to have little relevance to the UK, where Chancellor Rachel Reeves started her illustrious rise to the nation's top economic post at the Bank of England. Governor Andrew Bailey is a friend, even though the Chancellor and Governor are currently at odds over lifting the burden of City regulation. A more important clash between the Bank and the Government is on the horizon. Bailey is known to be dismissive of the short-lived administration of Liz Truss. In her memoir, Truss was unforgiving of the role that she claims Bailey played in her downfall. Dangerously for the Bank, critics on the Left and the Right are targeting its credibility and independence. The Leftist New Economics Foundation has consistently campaigned against the Bank's approach to 'quantitative tightening'. This process involves running down the £895billion of gilt holdings the Bank acquired between 2009 and 2021 as it injected cash into the banking system with the aim of averting recession and calming markets. The Treasury agreed to indemnify the Bank against losses at a potential cost of £130billion over the current decade. The UK approach is seen as meeting standards of fiscal probity but imposes an extraordinary burden on public finances at a time when the debt to national output (GDP) ratio is close to 100 per cent. The Fed, in contrast to the UK, decided to continue to hold Treasuries (the equivalent of gilts), bought in the post-financial crisis era, on its books and hold them to maturity. So there are no paper losses. Neil Collins (a former colleague) pointed to the daftness of Bank policy in a recent letter to The Spectator magazine. He noted that in May 2020 the Bank bought a long-gilt, dated 2061, for £101. It recently sold the very same stock at a price as low as £28! Few people pay much attention to 'Reform-onomics', even though Nigel Farage leads in the opinion polls. The main criticism of Reform is that the party's big-spending, populist policies are costly and could trigger a fresh Truss-like crisis. Less debated is the dispute between Reform apparatchik Richard Tice MP and Bailey over monetary policy. Tice suggests that the Bank's approach to quantitative tightening has enriched high street banks and is costing the taxpayer money. But Bailey points out the Bank booked an earlier £124billion profit on its gilt purchases and, for the moment, the Government is £34billion up. Details of the dispute are obscure. The more sinister point for Threadneedle Street is that Tice and Reform see Bank independence as potentially a soft target. Echoes of Donald Trump's attacks on the Fed can be heard loudly.

Bosses urge Chancellor to save a million kids from the scrapheap

More than 125 bosses, peers and academics have written to Rachel Reeves in a stark warning over the 'scandal' of nearly a million young people at risk of being a wasted generation. Official figures show there is an army of NEETs – people aged 16-24 who are not in employment, education or training. The letter, to be delivered to the Chancellor today, says that without urgent action, huge numbers are destined 'for the scrapheap.' It has been co-ordinated by Christopher Nieper, boss of the David Nieper fashion business, along with the Jobs Foundation charity. Signatories include JCB chief Lord Bamford, City tycoon Lord Spencer, property mogul Jamie Ritblat, grocery entrepreneur Sean Ramsden and venture capitalist Jon Moulton. Toyota UK and the Rigby Group, Europe's largest private IT services company, are also among the signatories urging a skills tax relief to incentivise firms to train young people, which they say would benefit the Exchequer and boost less prosperous areas. Nieper, who has rescued a failing school in Derbyshire which claims that it helped all 18-year-old pupils secure a job or further education, said: 'The cost of the NEETs crisis to the economy is unsustainable – not just in welfare payments but in lost productivity, unfulfilled potential and long-term damage caused by early unemployment.' He has proposed a tax break for employers and says modelling shows that if the number of NEETs is halved, the Exchequer would gain up to £23billion.
