Farmers warn of 'toe curling' risks on roads

Yahoo5 days ago
Farmers have urged motorists to be patient when travelling on rural roads during the harvest season after "several scary moments".
Henry Moreton, who farms near Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, said he had encountered multiple incidents of drivers attempting to overtake his tractor and combine harvester when it is not safe to do so.
"It does make your toes curl up," he said.
"You're better getting home two minutes later than not getting home at all. There are too many accidents, head on collisions with tractors and machinery. Just be vigilant."
Jason Butler, the owner of Pumpkin Patch Produce in Bewholme, East Yorkshire, said: "You do see some daft things - people overtaking on blind corners and taking unnecessary risks.
"If everyone went a bit steadier and had a bit more patience, then everyone would get there safely."
A spokesperson for insurer NFU Mutual said collisions between agricultural vehicles and third parties were 65% more likely between the start of May and the end of September, compared with other months.
Mr Moreton, who is Lincolnshire county chair of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), described a "terrifying wincing moment" when a minibus with children on board attempted to overtake him on a blind bend.
"The thing is, we will have to deal with the consequences," he said.
"We're the first responder. We're going to be the people getting people out of those cars or that bloke out of the hedge on his motorbike. It's a really scary thing. It's terrifying really."
NFU president Tom Bradshaw said: "We'll do our best to make sure we have safe loads, that we're not holding up the traffic too much, but this is a two-way thing. There needs to be a bit of understanding from everybody."
According to the Highway Code, if you are planning to overtake a large vehicle you should:
Drop back, make sure there is enough room, and do not cut in too quickly
Be aware large vehicles may need extra space when turning
Do not cross double white lines where the line nearest you is solid unless it is safe and you need to enter an adjoining premises or road
You can also cross double white lines to overtake a vehicle traveling at 10mph (16km/h) or less
If you are driving a large vehicle:
Do not hold up a long queue of traffic
Check your mirrors frequently and, if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass
Vehicles with a maximum speed of 25mph (40km/h) or less must use a flashing amber beacon on unrestricted dual carriageways
Mr Moreton said: "We will pull over if we can, but in certain conditions, we can't.
"We're very proud to serve the British public by growing food, so if the British public could give us a minute or two of their time, we will get out of the way as quick as possible."

Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (GPI): A Bull Case Theory

We came across a bullish thesis on Group 1 Automotive, Inc. Stock Analysis Compilation's Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on GPI. Group 1 Automotive, Inc. 's share was trading at $414.63 as of June 22nd. GPI's trailing and forward P/E were 11.57 and 10.06 respectively according to Yahoo Finance. Group 1 Automotive, Inc. is an internationally diversified automotive retailer with operations in the U.S. and U.K., built on disciplined growth, operational excellence, and a portfolio concentrated in luxury and import brands. The company's strategy emphasizes methodical consolidation through acquiring well-run dealerships at attractive prices and enhancing their performance via scale and operational expertise, creating a resilient and compounding enterprise in a fragmented industry. Its U.K. operations serve as a profitable differentiator and natural hedge against regional economic fluctuations, allowing management to allocate capital dynamically across markets. A core strength is its focus on luxury and import brands, which draw affluent, loyal customers and support a high-margin parts and service business. This segment functions as a stable, annuity-like revenue stream less exposed to the cyclicality of new vehicle sales, underpinning the company's operational stability. Group 1 also invests in digital innovation, exemplified by its AcceleRide platform, enabling customers to complete vehicle purchases entirely online—a critical capability in today's evolving retail landscape. A disciplined financial approach, underpinned by prudent capital management and a strong balance sheet, affords the flexibility to pursue accretive acquisitions while returning capital to shareholders. Management's proven track record and deep industry expertise reinforce confidence in its strategy, which balances external expansion with continuous operational improvement. By combining geographic diversification, a favorable brand mix, and a resilient service-driven revenue model, Group 1 Automotive stands as a best-in-class consolidator positioned for sustained, durable growth and long-term shareholder value creation in an evolving global automotive retail environment. Previously we covered a bullish thesis on Lithia Motors, Inc. (LAD) by Chit Chat Stocks in May 2025, which highlighted its disciplined roll-up model, focus on high-margin services, and significant consolidation runway in the fragmented auto dealership market. The stock has appreciated about 6.25% since then as the thesis played out. The thesis still stands, while Stock Analysis Compilation emphasizes Group 1 Automotive's international diversification and luxury-brand focus. Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start

General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.

Volvo Cars' head of global design steps down

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Volvo Cars head of global design has stepped down from the role after just over two years, the automaker said in an email. Jeremy Offer, whose appointment was announced in January 2023, told the automaker he wanted to prioritize spending more time with family. He also sought to reduce travel between Sweden and the U.K., according to the company. Volvo did not indicate Offer's last day with the company. Offer brought more than three decades of design experience when he joined Volvo Cars in 2023. Prior to that, he was SVP and chief design officer at the now shuttered UK-based EV maker Arrival. Nicholas Gronenthal, head of automotive design at Volvo Cars, will take over Offer's duties on an interim basis, the company said.
