Unwanted by All Blacks, Sotutu cast eyes abroad but is now focused on boosting Blues
The 26-year-old loose forward played the last of his 14 tests in 2022 and will be eligible to switch allegiance to either England or Fiji in November when he fulfils World Rugby's three-year stand-down rule.
Sotutu won Super Rugby's Player of the Year during the Blues' championship season last year but was frustrated to miss out on a place in Robertson's first All Blacks squads.
With a potential path to England through his mother, there was talk of a meeting between Sotutu and England coach Steve Borthwick to discuss a switch.
Sotutu denied having any direct conversation with Borthwick but said his agent had been put to work.
"When I didn't make the All Blacks last year, the immediate reaction was to explore and think about it," Sotutu told the New Zealand Herald.
"I can't say I had a chat (with Borthwick), but my agent went to work and explored options."
While missing out on the All Blacks, Sotutu was offered a place in the second-tier All Blacks XV squad for matches against Munster and Georgia last November.
He pulled out of the tour to have knee surgery and may have missed another chance to return for New Zealand when injuries struck Robertson's squad.
In Sotutu's absence, loose forwards Peter Lakai and Du'Plessis Kirifi were called up to the All Blacks squad, with Lakai playing against Japan and France on the season-ending tour of the Northern Hemisphere.
Sotutu is under contract with New Zealand Rugby through to the end of 2026 but said he had not had much "chat" with All Blacks staff.
"The All Blacks is something I can't control. I don't even think about it that much anymore," added the Blues number eight.
"At the beginning of my career, I put pressure on myself for that, but now I'm more focused on the Blues in that sense."
Coming off a bye round, the defending champion Blues are second-bottom on the table with one win from their first six games as they head into Saturday's home match against the Hurricanes.
They will hope to have Sotutu at his best to turn things round.
"We need to find our mojo again and get some belief back in the group," he said.

Enzo Maresca's nine-man Chelsea attacking plan puts Arsenal on transfer alert
Enzo Maresca wants to have nine attacking players in his Chelsea squad next season, and that could lead to exits for one or more of his current crop of Blues stars Chelsea's desire to have nine attackers in their first-team squad for next season could end up pushing three of their current players out - including Arsenal target Noni Madueke. Blues boss Enzo Maresca is said to want a first-team squad of 22 or 23 players going into the new Premier League season, with up to nine of those being attack-minded. Chelsea have already added Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro to their ranks this summer, and as it stands their attacking ranks will be made up of the new trio, Madueke, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and exciting new Brazilian youngster Willian Estevao, who will join from Palmeiras having agreed his switch last summer. But The Telegraph report that three of that number, namely Madueke, Jackson and Nkunku, are vulnerable to Chelsea launching further attacking moves this summer as they remain linked with several names. Of those three, England international winger Madueke would be seen as the most interesting player on the market. The Telegraph report adds that Chelsea would be willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old with Arsenal known to be admirers. The Gunners are looking to revamp their attacking options this summer, and are growing closer towards completing a deal for the Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres, who has emerged as their main striker target ahead of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. The Gunners are also being strongly linked with a move for Madueke's England international team-mate Eberechi Eze, who is said to be open to leaving Crystal Palace to return to a club where he was on the books as a youngster. Chelsea have also been linked with Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho, Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and West Ham star Mohammed Kudus this summer, with any move for one or more of those players putting the Stamford Bridge futures of Madueke, Jackson and/or Nkunku in peril. Young Blues forwards Tyrique George and Marc Guiu could be sent out on loan to gain some valuable first-team experience, while there is no future at the club for either Raheem Sterling or Joao Felix, and Mykhailo Mudryk is still facing up his potential doping ban.
