Alon Aboutboul, 'Dark Knight Rises' and 'Snowfall' actor, dies at 60

Alon Aboutboul, an Israeli actor best known for his roles in The Dark Knight and Rambo film franchises, has died. He was 60. Aboutboul died on July 29, after collapsing at the Dor HaBonim Beach Nature Reserve, also known as HaBonim Beach, south of Haifa, Israel, the actor's representative Mark Teitelbaum confirmed to USA TODAY. His cause of death was not disclosed. "Alon was a brilliant actor, a true artist, an Israeli icon, but more importantly, he was a loving father of his four children, and a dear friend of mine and many others," Teitelbaum said in a statement. "He possessed both a moral and spiritual clarity that is rare to find. As you might imagine, his family is in shock. He will be deeply missed. May his memory be a blessing." Born in Kiryat Ata, Israel, in May 1965, to a Jewish family from Egypt and Algeria, Aboutboul showed an early love for the performing arts. He cut his teeth as an aspiring thespian at the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts in Givatayim. Aboutboul made his silver-screen debut at 15 with a role in the 1980 Hebrew-language film "Morning Star." The actor found his breakthrough in American cinema when he landed the supporting role of Nissem in "Rambo III," the second sequel in the action-hero franchise starring Sylvester Stallone. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Aboutboul landed a series of leading roles in Israeli films, such as "Planet Blue" (1995), "Nina's Tragedies" (2003), "Melanoma My Love" (2006) and "Wild Dogs" (2007). In the early 2010s, Aboutboul joined the DC universe with a role in 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises," playing Dr. Leonid Pavel in the finale of Christopher Nolan's Batman series starring Christian Bale. Ozzy Osbourne death: Funeral procession for Black Sabbath rocker to ride through UK hometown Miki Zohar, Israel's Minister of Culture and Sports, paid tribute to Aboutboul's entertainment legacy in a July 29 X post, sharing that he was "deeply saddened" by the actor's death: "He portrayed a wide range of characters, bringing depth and emotion to them, leaving a profound mark on Israeli culture." "Last night, I watched an interview with him where he spoke about filming a movie he recently participated in, and the passion for his craft that radiated from him was evident even after so many years in the industry," Zohar wrote. MONSTER Season 4 Casts Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden With Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps — GeekTyrant

Netflix's anthology series Monster is gearing up for another season, this time focusing on the axe murders of the young murderess Lizzie Borden. Ella Beatty ( Feud ) will star as Lizzie, and she will be joined by Rebecca Hall ( The Prestige , The Town ), who has been cast as Lizzie's stepmother, Abby Borden, and Vicky Krieps ( Phantom Thread , Old ), who will play Bridget Sullvan, a maid in the Borden household. The fourth season of Monster was first reported to be in the works back in early July. Monster Season 3, which will star Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein, is believed to be releasing later in 2025. Lizzie Borden lived in Massachusetts in the late 1800s. In 1892, she was accused of murdering both her father and her stepmother with an axe at their shared home. Borden was eventually acquitted of the crimes, but the brutal nature of the murders attracted nationwide attention and contributed to Borden's place in popular culture. The case has been the subject of numerous adaptations across a wide variety of media. This project marks Beatty's second collaboration with Monster co-creator Ryan Murphy. Beatty made her TV acting debut in Feud: Capote vs. the Swans in the role of Kerry O'Shea. via: Variety

This Tom Holland-Zendaya movie is selling out screenings a year before its release

Homer's ancient Greek saga 'The Odyssey' is about a heroic quest, and it appears it will be an epic achievement for cinemagoers just to get tickets to Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated 2026 film. In an inspired promotion to mark the film's one-year-out release date, Universal Pictures and IMAX made tickets available for four select 70mm IMAX screenings during the film's first weekend of release, July 16-19, 2026. Tickets went on sale at 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at 26 theaters around the world, including three in Northern California, and within a few minutes nearly all were sold. As of Thursday morning, only a few seats in the front rows remained at the AMC Metreon 16, Regal Hacienda Crossings in Dublin and the Esquire IMAX Theatre in Sacramento. AMC's website briefly crashed on Wednesday. 'The Odyssey' stars Tom Holland as Telemachus, who goes on an epic search for his lost father, Odysseus (Matt Damon). Oakland native Zendaya, Holland's fiancée, has also been cast, but her role has not been revealed. The movie's cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo and Benny Safdie. It is the first feature-length film to be made entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan, a champion of film technology who refuses to go digital, has been using IMAX cameras for select sequences in his movies since ' The Dark Knight ' (2008), including his Oscar-winning 2023 film ' Oppenheimer.' If advance ticket sales are an indicator, 'The Odyssey,' budgeted at $250 million, seems like a threat to match the $975 million taken in by 'Oppenheimer,' which made 20% ($190 million) of its box office sales in IMAX screenings. After 'Oppenheimer''s success, Nolan worked with IMAX to upgrade its cameras so he could film 'The Odyssey' entirely in the immersive format. Issues that Noland had with the cameras' weight and noise as well as processing of the 70mm film stock were resolved. The cameras are reportedly 30% quieter during filming. 'He forced us to rethink that side of our business,' IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond told reporters at the Cannes Film festival in May. One thing's for sure: There won't be a repeat of 'Barbenheimer,' the box office battle between Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie,' which took in $1.45 billion, and 'Oppenheimer,' both released on the same day in July 2023. Though Nolan and Gerwig are skipping the same-day release strategy this time, Gerwig's first 'Narnia' movie, based on the C.S. Lewis books, is scheduled to hit IMAX screens later in the year on Thanksgiving Day in 2026.
