For all the dogs: Panthers' Sam Bennett nets a goal for rescue animals

Yahoo21-05-2025
RALEIGH, N.C. — Tuesday was National Rescue Dog Day, which is not exactly a well-known event.
Panthers forward Sam Bennett did not know that, but he celebrated in his own way, netting a goal in Florida's Game 1 win over Carolina. In October, Bennett launched 'Benny's Buddies,' a program that sponsors the adoption fee for a Humane Society of Broward County rescue every time he scores a goal.

'That's awesome,' Bennett said when informed of the day's significance. 'I actually didn't know that, so that … just made my day. That's awesome.'
Bennett, who had 25 regular-season goals, leads the Panthers with seven playoff goals. That is 32 more pets who will be free to adopt from the Humane Society of Broward County.
'We've had so much success with Benny's Buddies this year and got tons of support,' Bennett said. 'And it's just, it's growing a lot, and we're getting tons of traction, tons of pets, cats and dogs have got adopted this year. And I think there's even more to come with that program. So definitely really, really excited about it.'
Luostarinen gets revenge, continues playoff hot streak
Eetu Luostarinen started his NHL career in Raleigh. The Hurricanes signed him out of the Finnish league and sent him to the minors.

In 2019-20, Luostarinen played eight games for the Hurricanes before they dealt him to the Panthers during the season.
Luostarinen, who played for Florida when it beat Carolina in the 2023 Eastern Conference final, got his first playoff goal against his former team in Game 1. He scored to make it 5-1 in the third period, helping ice the game.
Luostarinen has been a standout on the third line with Brad Marchand and Anton Lundell. The 26-year-old forward has four goals and nine assists in 13 playoff games, leading the team with 13 postseason points.
'I just try to keep it as simple as possible,' Luostarinen said. 'Be honest, work two ways and (I am) getting rewarded right now.'
Ex-UM coach supports other Hurricanes
Manny Diaz, the former Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator and head coach who spent six years in Coral Gables, is now rooting for the other Hurricanes team.

Diaz, a Miami native, is the head coach at Duke, and he is sticking with supporting the local team. He was at the Lenovo Center Tuesday night, winding a siren to get the Carolina Hurricanes fans fired up.
Diaz switched allegiances, though. When he was still coaching UM, Diaz was shown on the Jumbotron supporting the Panthers.

Why Jaguars' depth chart reveal was great Travis Hunter fantasy news

The Jacksonville Jaguars currently find themselves in untrodden territory. The team invested quite a bit in moving up to select Travis Hunter at No. 2 in the 2025 NFL draft, and it took the reigning Heisman Trophy winner with the intent to turn him into the NFL's first regular two-way player in more than 60 years. Hunter played most snaps at both receiver and cornerback in college at Colorado, but as of now, it's not exactly clear how the Jaguars intend to use him as a rookie in 2025. However, we may have gotten a bit more clarity as the team released its first depth chart of the season amid training camp. On the depth chart, Hunter is listed as a starting receiver alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and free agent addition Dyami Brown. Meanwhile, he is listed among the second-string cornerbacks, behind starters Tyson Campbell and Jourdan Lewis. That would seemingly indicate that Hunter is going to see the bulk of his snaps on offense, at least to start, and that is certainly a boon for fantasy football managers with Hunter on their team. Hopes are high for the Jaguars' offense in 2025 as the team is now led by Liam Coen, one of the NFL's top offensive coordinators last season. With Coen, a healthy Trevor Lawrence and Thomas, who starred as a rookie last season, this could be a productive unit with Hunter poised to benefit, as well. The only major concern for fantasy managers would be that Hunter's usage on defense could siphon critical snaps away on offense and limit his fantasy production. We'll have to see how Hunter is used when the Jags take the field in preseason for the first time against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, but the team seems to be indicating that fantasy managers can rest easily and most of Hunter's early contributions will be on the offensive side of the ball. Colorado football lands 2026 offensive lineman over Syracuse, UCF

Colorado football secured a commitment from class of 2026 three-star offensive lineman Ben Gula on Friday evening. Gula chose the Buffaloes over Syracuse and UCF. He held offers from 21 programs, including Colorado. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound lineman visited Boulder on June 6 and UCF on June 13. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, product is 247Sports Composite No. 96 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 131 player from Florida. Gula becomes Deion Sanders and the Buffs' tenth commitment to their 2026 recruiting class. He is the third commitment in the class from Florida, which is always a plus in Sanders' eyes. What position Gula plays along the offensive line remains to be seen. His size (285 pounds) might project him more as a tackle than a guard, but it will be something to watch when Gula gets to campus. The commitment brings Colorado's 2026 class to No. 80 nationally, but it still ranks last in the Big 12. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Marlins reinstate Derek Hill from injured list, designate Jack Winkler for assignment

MIAMI (AP) — Outfielder Derek Hill was reinstated from the 10-day injured list by the Miami Marlins on Monday after he had been sidelined the past two weeks with a finger sprain. Hill injured his left middle finger during a session in the batting cage last month and returned Monday after a short rehab stint with Triple-A Jacksonville. He is batting .211 with two home runs in 33 games this season. Infielder Jack Winkler was designated for assignment by Miami. Also Monday, the Marlins claimed outfielder Joey Wiemer off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and optioned him to Triple-A Jacksonville. Wiemer, who was designated for assignment by the Royals last week, hit .182 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs for Triple-A Omaha this season. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
