Health workers strike over ‘no pay' in 3 dists

Time of India3 days ago
Dehradun: Outsourced workers under the National Health Mission (NHM) began a work boycott on July 1 in Tehri, Almora and Nainital districts, citing non-payment of salaries for the past three months.
Although their salaries have been due since April, no payments have been made, fueling frustration, particularly as monsoon-related duties intensify.
Workers also said that their Employees' Provident Fund contributions have not been deposited since January. According to doctors on duty, the protest impacted the health services to some extent across the three districts on Tuesday.
In Tehri, 52 workers submitted a memorandum to the chief medical officer, while around 150 and 175 workers joined the strike in Almora and Nainital, respectively.
NHM Workers' Association has warned that if payments are not cleared soon, more of the state's approximately 1,400 NHM staff may join the protest Those on strike include staff nurses, ANMs and data entry operators among others.
"This is a recurring concern that needs a permanent solution. In a season where many are deployed on disaster relief and Char Dham duties, how can they perform at their best when morale is so low?" said Sunil Bhandari of the NHM workers' association, Uttarakhand.
Meanwhile, the health authorities claimed they have already resolved the issue and that the pending salaries will be disbursed soon.

Spike in JE cases across state; 13 dead, 47 infected so far this year

Guwahati: State is witnessing a concerning surge in Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases, with Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) reporting 47 confirmed infections so far. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The mosquito-borne viral disease has already claimed 13 lives across the state. Data provided by GMCH authorities shows that JE cases began emerging in April, with the first fatalities reported in June. While six patients have recovered and been discharged, three left the hospital against medical advice and several others are still undergoing treatment. The infection has been detected across several districts — Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Nalbari, Darrang, Bajali, Morigaon, Dhubri—and even from neighbouring Meghalaya. GMCH's chief superintendent and principal, Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya, said Kamrup (Rural) is the worst-affected district, with 16 cases, followed by Nalbari with 11 and Darrang with 7. Comparatively fewer cases have been reported from Kamrup (Metro) (3) and Meghalaya (1). He said young children and the elderly have emerged as the most vulnerable groups, and emphasised the importance of preventive measures. Last year on the same date, GMCH logged 112 confirmed JE cases statewide. Meanwhile, data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC) under the National Health Mission (NHM) shows that Assam has consistently recorded 200-600 JE cases annually since 2018. Fatalities typically run into double digits and once crossed 100 in 2019. Speaking to TOI, an NHM official said, "This is a vector-borne disease primarily transmitted through mosquitoes. Humans are dead-end hosts — they do not spread the virus further. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In contrast, pigs and cattle act as amplifying hosts, increasing the viral load and transmission risk." The official added that swamps, paddy fields, and stagnant water are common breeding grounds for Culex mosquitoes, and proximity to pig sties significantly raises the infection risk. Proper separation and personal precautions are strongly advised. On early symptoms, the official said JE often begins with fever, headache, diarrhea, and seizures — typically developing within 2-3 days. Prompt medical care is critical, as early diagnosis and timely intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes. JE remains manageable when addressed early.

345 people on Nipah contact list in Kerala

A total of 345 people have been put on the Nipah contact list in the State, a statement issued by Health Minister Veena George after a high-level meeting here on Friday. This includes 211 people in Malappuram, 91 in Palakkad, and 43 in Kozhikode. All those on the contact list at Kozhikode are health-care workers Two persons from Palakkad and Malappuram suspected of having Nipah after preliminary examination of samples at Malappuram and Kozhikode Medical Colleges had tested positive. Following this, the sample from Palakkad sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune was confirmed as positive. However, the Health department had initiated all control measures in Palakkad even before the official conformation came. The route map of the Nipah-positive person in Palakkad has now been released and Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts have been put on alert. Meanwhile, experts cautioned people that roosting bats should not be disturbed by bursting crackers or by any other means. The department directed the affected districts to strengthen contact tracing by focussing around hospitals and other health-care institutions and to ensure that none are missed when preparing the contact lists. Both patients in Malappuram and Palakkad began showing symptoms from June 25 and 26. Health workers will start collecting local field information from the three weeks preceding this period. Efforts will be to find if there have been any pneumonia or encephalitis deaths in the localities. The department has established State and district control rooms in connection with the Nipah outbreaks. In all three districts, 26 committees each have been set up. The help of the police is also being sought to prepare the contact list. The district Collectors have declared containment zones in Palakkad and Malappuram. People here should necessarily wear masks in public places. Those who participated in the high-level meeting convened by the Health Minister included the Additional Chief Secretary (Health), NHM State Mission Director, Director of Health Services, Director of Medical Education, Additional Directors, District Collectors, District Medical Officers, police officials, and other department officials.
