Josh Tongue
turned the tide in England's favour with two sharp wickets on a rain-hit Day 1 of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, putting India on the back foot in their must-win encounter.
After India lost skipper Shubman Gill to a run-out, the visitors were looking to rebuild through Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja.
But Tongue had other ideas.

First, he got rid of the gritty Sudharsan in the 36th over, who had settled in after scoring 38 off 108 balls. Tongue delivered a sensational ball that angled in and then nipped away late, squaring Sudharsan up completely. The left-hander edged it straight to Jamie Smith behind the stumps, walking off immediately after the nick. It was a high-quality delivery - one that would have troubled even the most seasoned batters.
Then came an even more awkward ball for Jadeja in the 40th over. Trying to hang in and build a partnership, the all-rounder was undone by a short-of-length delivery that kicked off the surface and moved away. Jadeja was caught in an uncomfortable position as he tried to defend on the move, and the outside edge once again flew to Smith. The veteran batter, who put up a marathon stand with Washington Sundar in the 4th Test could only manage 9 runs in 13 balls.

In a spell where Tongue had been inconsistent, these two deliveries stood out for their quality and impact. Both Sudharsan and Jadeja were key to India's plans of putting up a strong first-innings total, and their dismissals have left the visitors in a pickle.

754 and out – Shubman Gill ends stunning series 20 runs short of Sunil Gavaskar's record

Shubman Gill may have scored just 11 runs in the second innings of the fifth Test, after scoring 21 in the first, which may not be noteworthy numbers but they have brought to an end a stunning series with the bat. Gill has ended the series with a tally of 754 runs, which is the second highest tally of all time for an Indian in any Test series, only behind Sunil Gavaskar's 774 against the mighty West Indies in a five-Test series in 1971. Gavaskar had played only four matches in that series, having made his debut only in the second Test. Gill, meanwhile, has achieved this feat on his debut as India's Test captain. He is also just the third Indian to score more than 700 runs in a single series after Gavaskar and his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 712 runs in a five-Test series at home against England in 2023/24. Gill's tally is also the second highest for a captain in any Test series, only 56 runs behind the record of 810 held by the legendary Don Bradman, who had scored that against England at home in the 1936/37 Ashes. Conversely, it is the highest score by any Indian captain in a Test series by a margin of of 22 runs – Gavaskar held the record previous for the 732 he scored in the six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79. Gill fell in the first innings of the first Test after going for a single that was never there. In the second innings, Gill fell off the very first ball of the second session, being trapped in front of his stumps by an inswinger from Gus Atkinson. The only Tests in which Gill failed to score centuries in this series were both in London – the third Test at Lord's and the fifth Test at the Oval. Gill started the series by scoring a century on his captaincy debut. He scored 147 in his very first innings as the skipper, followed by a score of eight in the second innings. Gill then made merry in the second Test, scoring a record 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second as he powered India to a 336-run win at Edgbaston. He then could only manage scores of 16 and six in the third Test and 12 in the first innings of the fourth before grinding out 103 runs off 238 balls as part of a match-saving effort with KL Rahul. Rahul and Gill batted out nearly 70 overs after which unbeaten centuries by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India draw the match. This was followed by the 21 and 11 he scored at the Oval.

ENG vs IND: Kumar Dharmasena faces fans' wrath after Jadeja lbw howler

Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena is receiving flak from Indian fans after his wrong decision against Ravindra Jadeja on Day 3 of the fifth Test against England at the Oval. Dharmasena, who was earlier criticised for revealing that Sai Sudharsan had got an inside edge on his pads on Day 1 to England, raised his finger to signal Jadeja out in the second session on Day India all-rounder immediately opted for DRS, and the ball-tracking revealed that he was struck outside off stump, and hence the decision was reversed. However, the decision didn't go down well with Indian fans, who slammed Dharmasena for his biased umpiring. Earlier, umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula faced criticism for their shoddy umpiring during the third Test of the series at Lord's, where India fell 23 runs short of England's target of 193 in the fourth India extended their second innings lead beyond 280 in the second innings courtesy of a splendid century from Yashasvi Jaiswal. The southpaw played a magnificent innings of 118 (164), smashing 14 fours and two vs IND 5th Test Day 3 UpdatesJaiswal started the day by stitching a massive partnership with nightwatchman Akash Deep as the duo frustrated England in the first session. They added 107 runs for the fourth wicket off 150 balls to suck the life out of a depleted England attack sans Chris further stitched crucial stands with Karun Nair and Ravindra Jadeja of 40 and 44 runs respectively. He brought up his century off 127 balls with a quick single against Gus Atkinson. It was the 6th Test century for the India opener and his second of the series.
