New Zealand woman arrested after toddler found in suitcase on bus
The unidentified woman has been charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
She was arrested on Sunday after police were called at about 12:50 a.m. local time when a passenger bus arrived at a planned stop in Kaiwaka, about 60 miles north of Auckland, and the driver noticed a bag moving in the luggage compartment.
"When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the 2-year-old girl," Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement.
"The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed."
The child has since been transported to a hospital where she remains, undergoing what authorities called an extensive medical assessment.
Authorities did not state the relationship between the woman and the child.
"We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome," Harrison said.
Oranga Tamariki, New Zealand's Ministry for Children, has been notified.

Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman was released from Los Angeles County jail on Monday, Aug. 4 after Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office decided not to file criminal charges following Perryman's arrest on weapons violation charges, online records show. Perryman, 32, was stopped Friday, Aug. 1 by South Los Angeles Station deputies for vehicle code violations, authorities said, and during a search deputies discovered five firearms in Perryman's vehicle, two of which were assault style rifles. "He was arrested and booked on weapons violation charges and was cooperative with deputies," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. Perryman was being held without bail at the South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station and was scheduled to appear at Inglewood Court on Tuesday, Aug. 5. But he was released from jail Monday after the District Attorney's Office decided not to press charges. Perryman is in his second stint with the Chargers, having played for them from 2015, when he was a second-round pick by the team when they were in San Diego, until 2020. Perryman also played for the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans before returning to the Chargers for the 2024 season. Perryman started all 11 games he played in last season. Police searching for three hit-and-run drivers that killed pedestrian in Baldwin Hills
Police are searching for at least three hit-and-run drivers who struck and killed a 61-year-old pedestrian in Baldwin Hills on Sunday night. It happened at around 9 p.m. near the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Roseland Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators say that the victim, who hasn't yet been publicly identified, was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a car traveling northbound. He was then subsequently hit by two other cars, also heading north, police said. None of the three drivers stopped to help the man, who was pronounced dead after he was rushed to a nearby hospital. A standing reward of up to $50,000 has been offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the alleged hit-and-run drivers.
