Son Heung-min to leave Tottenham this summer after decade
In May he lifted the Europa League trophy but he had a poor season overall by his high standards and struggled with a series of leg injuries.
"Before we start the press conference I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer," the South Korean told reporters in Seoul, where Tottenham are on a pre-season tour.
"Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision."
Son, who has scored 173 goals for Spurs, did not say where he intends to go next and cut an emotional figure.
He has been linked with a move to the MLS in the United States.
"It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision," Son said, flanked by new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank.
"I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change -- 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age.
"I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man."
Speaking in Korean, Son said that winning a European trophy -- Tottenham's first European crown in 41 years -- played "a big part" in his thinking.
"Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could," he said.
"I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again."
Frank, who joined Spurs from Brentford in June, paid tribute to the South Korean skipper.
"For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player," said the Dane, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou.
"He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League."
Spurs will face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, and Son is guaranteed a rapturous reception in front of his home fans.
Spurs have had a fairly quiet summer in the transfer market so far, with attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus from West Ham their only major acquisition.
Morgan Gibbs-White had looked set to follow from Nottingham Forest but a £60 million move broke down.

The stylish batsman scored a remarkable 754 runs in five Tests, falling just 20 shy of Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing series record for an Indian cricketer. Gill, nicknamed "Prince", arrived in England in early June under intense pressure and with a modest Test average of 35. During the second Test at Edgbaston he compiled a majestic 269 in the first innings and a turbo-charged 161 in the second innings as India won to level the series. After a quiet third Test at Lord's, won by the hosts, Gill returned to form in Manchester, grafting for 103 in 238 balls as the tourists battled successfully to draw the match and keep the series alive. An unnecessary first-innings run-out in the fifth Test at the Oval left him an agonising 31 runs short of Gavaskar's mark and he fell for just 11 in his final innings of the campaign. Schick extends Bayer Leverkusen contract until 2030
"Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czechia international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030," the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Since joining the Werkself in 2020, Schick has netted 81 times in 168 appearances in all competitions, as well as laying on 12 assists. Under the tutelage of now-departed coach Xabi Alonso, Schick contributed vital goals on numerous occasions as Leverkusen became the first club to win the Bundesliga without losing a match. He also lifted the German Cup and German Super Cup in 2024. "I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies," said Schick. India's Siraj 'woke up believing' ahead of Test heroics
England, set 374 to win, lost a nail-biting encounter by just six runs, with Siraj returning innings figures of 5-104 as India ended a rollercoaster campaign level at 2-2. The hosts resumed on Monday's final day on 339-6, needing just 35 more runs for a win that would have given them a 3-1 series success. But they had no answer to the enduring skill of fast bowler Siraj, who featured in all five games. He undid England on Monday with a brilliant burst of 3-9 in 25 balls, ending the match in style when he knocked over Gus Atkinson's off-stump. "Each hundred that I scored had a very different significance," said the 25-year-old. "The one in Leeds was my first match (as captain), I was under a bit of pressure. "Then the double hundred and the hundred in Birmingham (where India won the second Test), to be able to seal that match was also special and the one in Manchester (in the drawn fourth Test), to be able to save that game from there, each of them has a story and each of them means a lot to me."
