How the logistics industry is unlocking youth employment opportunities in SA
With South Africa's youth unemployment rate sitting at a staggering 62.4%, finding sustainable job opportunities for young people has become an urgent national priority. While many sectors are stagnating, logistics is booming – fueled by the rise of e-commerce, digital innovation and global trade – creating a new wave of career paths.
Transnet plays a central role in the South African economy and the government's goal of inclusive growth.
'From supply chain analytics and IT systems integration to customer experience and compliance, logistics is evolving into a dynamic, tech-enabled industry that offers diverse professional avenues for South Africa's youth,' said Gregory Saffy, managing director for Sub-Saharan African Operations at FedEx.
While traditional roles like drivers, packers and sorters will always be essential, they are increasingly supported by technology-driven processes. This shift creates additional opportunities for young people looking for more technology focused roles.
'Logistics isn't what it used to be. The real competitive advantage now lies in digital capability, especially in areas like data analytics and systems thinking. We're seeing more engineers and analysts in the business than ever before, guiding operations and enabling automation at scale,' said Saffy.
Beyond data analytics and IT roles, compliance and customs clearance are also emerging as key growth areas for job creation. Saffy highlights the development of a formalised customs qualification as a major step forward for the industry.
'We're seeing progress in the creation of a national customs clearance certification that will give individuals a recognised qualification, including those with practical experience but no matric pass. This will create a clear career path and raise the overall standard of compliance across the industry,' he added.
FedEx is already enrolling its customs clerks into newly developed courses in freight forwarding and customs compliance. In addition to formalising technical knowledge, these programmes also focus on future-ready skills like digital literacy, data analysis and critical thinking.
For young people without access to formal education, FedEx offers a clear entry point through its Yes Learnerships.
'Our 12-month programme combines training, mentoring and practical work experience,' said Saffy. 'Since 2019, we've onboarded more than 150 unemployed youth through YES, with more than 60 going on to become permanent employees. It's a powerful model for bridging the gap between education and employment.'
In parallel, FedEx runs a dedicated learnership programme for youth living with disabilities, offering an NQF Level 4 certificate in business administration. This includes coaching, blended learning and real-world operational experience – helping to build inclusive, work-ready skills pipelines.

The South African residential property market continues to gain momentum, with Stats SA's latest Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) revealing a national annual house price inflation of 5,2% in January 2025 – up from a revised 5,1% in December 2024. Apart from the suburbs that are outperforming the national averages, Goslett expressed his optimism following the release of the latest property inflation figures and encourages both buyers and sellers to take advantage of the current market dynamics. 'The latest figures reinforce that South African real estate market is strengthening and prices are starting to rise. This steady yet encouraging rise in property prices suggests that buyers still have a window of opportunity to enter the market while prices remain comparatively accessible, ahead of any potential sharper increases later in the year,' Goslett notes. Tanzania Airlines blacklisted by EU, but safe in South African skies
Air Tanzania's operations in South Africa remain unaffected, though Sacaa has not ruled out the possibility of future action. The European Union (EU) blacklisted all airlines, cargo and passenger, certified by the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) this month. The country's flag carrier, Air Tanzania, and its cargo and charter peers are now banned from entering European airspace. EU bans Tanzanian carriers from its airspace The move was prompted by what the EU called 'serious deficiencies' in Tanzania's aviation oversight. But civil aviation authorities in South Africa say they have no safety or compliance concerns about the Tanzanian airline operating into South Africa. Presently, no Tanzanian carriers operate in the EU; however, national airline Air Tanzania had set its sights on long-haul operations, including flights to the UK, which are now scuppered. The EU said TCAA has a lack of qualified personnel, ineffective regulatory supervision, and noncompliance with international safety standards a challenge locally. No red flags for SA, says Sacaa South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa) spokesperson Naledi Shange said: 'Airlines from Tanzania undergo our own rigorous technical assessments and ramp inspections before receiving foreign operator permits to operate in South African airspace.' For now, Air Tanzania's operations in South Africa remain unaffected. The Sacaa has not ruled out the possibility of future action, but Shange said that any decisions will be based on its assessments, not the decisions of foreign regulators. Even if an international body such as the EU or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US flags concerns, Sacaa conducts its own investigations and assessments before considering any bans or enforcement action. If technical or safety concerns are identified, enforcement procedures are initiated, including grounding of the aircraft, if necessary,' Shange said. 'Each operator is assessed independently. We do not rely solely on the actions or findings of other authorities.' Thus far, she said, there have been no bans on international operators in South African airspace, only corrective action. 'As part of our surveillance programme, we do conduct planned and ad hoc inspections of foreign operators. 'If issues are identified, we act. In most cases, these are addressed before the aircraft departs,' she said. That said, recently, South African airlines stood to forfeit access to US and EU airspace after the country failed to meet a key international aviation obligation and ensure the establishment of an independent body to investigate aircraft accidents. At present, they're handled by the Civil Aviation Authority, an entity housed under the Department of Transport, which does not meet the required level of independence. The department has since confirmed it will table a draft policy before Cabinet in a bid to avoid a serious safety finding, which could see local carriers grounded from some of the world's most important air corridors. When it comes to safety standards, Shange said robust international oversight and a strong performance record of the Sacaa. 'Sacaa participates in the [International Civil Aviation Organisation] universal safety oversight audit programme – continuous monitoring approach, which evaluates global aviation safety compliance,' she said. 'In 2022, South Africa achieved a final safety oversight score of 91.38%, placing the country among the top 20 globally.' The FAA also reaffirmed South Africa's category 1 status, the highest accolade possible, under its international aviation safety assessment programme in the same year.
