CHENNAI: ONE of Divya Deshmukh or Koneru Humpy will feature in next year's women's Candidates, the eight-player double round-robin tournament whose topper will play in the 2026 edition of the women's world Championships. This was confirmed after Humpy's win in the quarterfinal against Yuxin Song on Sunday. On Monday, Deshmukh joined her senior compatriot in the last four after her tie-break win over D Harika in the women's World Cup in Batumi. The teen, an age-group world champion, continued her fairy tale run in Georgia as she took down another GM. A few days after bringing down the second seed and one of the pre-tournament favourites, China's Zhu Jiner's, she repeated the trick against Harika as she won both the tie-break games. After the pair of games, she credited her coach 'for the prep'. "I would have to say the preparation had a lot of role in that game (first game of the break with white pieces)," she said. "I would have to thank my coach for that." Neither player held a clear advantage out of the opening — the eval bar was pretty much level after 20 moves — but the 19-year-old built up an advantage thanks to couple of sharp moves as she punished several of Harika's questionable moves in the middlegame. A blunder from her — 27. c6 — put the younger Indian in the driver's seat. And it's an advantage she didn't relinquish till Harika resigned. Both players traded major inaccuracies in the second of the two breakers. At one point of time in the endgame, Harika had the chance to win on demand but there were some miscalculations and the IM won a second game in succession. She faces Tan Zhongyi in one of the two semis, while Humpy faces the other Chinese, Lei Tingjie, for a place in the final.

Former Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button regards Max Verstappen as the 'most rounded F1 driver that there has ever been", lauding the Dutchman's ability to maximise performance from any car. Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Button reflected on Verstappen's remarkable talent, despite a relatively challenging 2025 season. The Red Bull driver is currently third in the Drivers' Championship with 165 points, trailing leader Oscar Piastri by 69 points and second-placed Lando Norris by 61. Nevertheless, Button asserted that Verstappen's comprehensive abilities make him the best on the current grid. 'I feel he's the most rounded F1 driver that there has ever been," Button said. 'And I know he hasn't won the championships of Lewis [Hamilton]. And I obviously think Lewis is extremely, extremely good and one of the best in the world. But there's just something about Max that he can do something with a car that I don't think anyone else can." Verstappen's F1 record is impressive: four World Championships, 65 race wins, 44 pole positions, and 117 podiums since his debut in 2015. Although 2025 has presented tougher competition, Button still considers him a notch above the rest. When asked about the second-best driver currently, Button named the McLaren duo. 'I think Lando and Oscar are both up there," he said. 'They're very different personalities. I think Lando can be his own worst enemy. He's unbelievably quick, but if he makes a tiny mistake… I think he thinks about it too much. 'Oscar is very level-headed. He just wants to go racing, and he wants to drive fast, and he does it very well." Button, who partnered Lewis Hamilton at McLaren from 2010 to 2012, also recalled Hamilton's natural flair often amazed him. 'He would struggle in practice, come to qualify, I'm like, 'Right, I've got him. I'm going to have him.' And he'd just, bang, put in a lap. It just came from nowhere." 'Extreme talent, and obviously the career he's had — I'm not sure anyone's going to beat that, his records. But just thinking about this moment in time, I feel that Max is the one who can do more with a car than anyone else," he said. China Open Super 1000: Satwik-Chirag lead Indian challenge, Schedule, Where to watch
Top Indian shuttlers will aim to build their momentum for the upcoming World Championships as they kick-off their campaign at the China Open Super 1000 event tomorrow. Currently ranked world number 15 in world, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be looking to break the semi-final curse of this season as they have reached three semifinals this season including the Malaysia Open and India Open. Satwik's health concerns and Chirag's back injury stalled their season but they returned to reach semifinal of Singapore Open and quarterfinal of Indonesia Open. The former world number one pair will start their campaign in China against Japan's Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura. In the men's singles, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy will hope to regain some form before the World Championships. Lakshya, ranked 18, is the highest-ranked Indian shuttler in men's singles but has struggled with consistency this season and his best performance was a quarter-final finish at the All England. He will open his campaign against local shuttler and fifth-seed Li Shi Feng. Battling health issues this season, HS Prannoy has dropped to world number 35 and he will start his campaign against Koki Watanabe of Japan in the first round. Three women shuttlers will be participating in the women's singles with double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu leading the charge. Current world number 16, Sindhu has suffered multiple early exits this year with quarterfinal finish in the India Open being her best performance. Last week, she lost to Korea's Sim Yu Jin, making it her fifth first-round exit of the year. She will be opening her campaign against former youth world champion Tomoka Miyazaki, who has troubled Sindhu in past. Among others, Unnati Hood, faces Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour in the first round, while Anupama Upadhyaya takes on Lin Hsiang Ti of Chinese Taipei. In women's doubles, Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi, the Panda sisters Rutaparna and Swetaparna, and the pair of Amrutha Pramuthesh-Sonali Singh are in the fray, while Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde will compete in mixed doubles. The China Open is the last major event before the World Championships, scheduled from August 25 to 31 in Paris, and all players will be hoping to register some wins to build confidence ahead of the prestigious tournament.
