Israeli Attack On Iranian Prison Killed 71 People
ANKARA, June 29 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- An Israeli air strike on a prison in the Iranian capital, Tehran, last week killed 71 people and injured many others, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing local media.
A spokesman for Iran's judiciary, Asghar Jahangir, on Sunday condemned the attack on Evin Prison as a 'full-fledged crime by Zionist forces,' stressing that the strike also impacted civilians living near the prison's visitation and judicial buildings, according to Iran's Mehr news agency.
The casualties include prison administrative staff, conscripted soldiers, inmates, relatives of prisoners, as well as civilians living near the prison, some of whom lost their lives in the air strike, the spokesman added.

JERUSALEM: Palestinians in northern Gaza reported one of the worst nights of Israeli bombardment in weeks after the military issued mass evacuation orders on Monday, while Israeli officials were due in Washington for a new ceasefire push by the Trump administration. A day after US President Donald Trump urged an end to the 20-month-old war, a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected at the White House for talks on a Gaza ceasefire, Iran, and possible wider regional diplomatic deals. But on the ground in the Palestinian enclave there was no sign of fighting letting up. "Explosions never stopped; they bombed schools and homes. It felt like earthquakes," said Salah, 60, a father of five children, from Gaza City. "In the news we hear a ceasefire is near, on the ground we see death and we hear explosions." Israeli tanks pushed into the eastern areas of Zeitoun suburb in Gaza City and shelled several areas in the north, while aircraft bombed at least four schools after ordering hundreds of families sheltering inside to leave, residents said. At least 25 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Monday, health authorities said, including 10 people killed in Zeitoun. The Israeli military said it struck militant targets in northern Gaza, including command and control centers, after taking steps to mitigate the risk of harming civilians. The heavy bombardment followed new evacuation orders to vast areas in the north, where Israeli forces had operated before and left behind wide-scale destruction. The military ordered people there to head south, saying that it planned to fight Hamas militants operating in northern Gaza, including in the heart of Gaza City. Later on Monday (June 30), health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said at least 13 people had been killed southwest of Gaza City, bringing Monday's death toll to at least 38. Medics said most of the casualties were hit by gunfire, but residents also reported an airstrike. There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military on the incident. NEXT STEPS A day after Trump called to "Make the deal in Gaza, get the hostages back", Israel's strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer, a confidant of Netanyahu's, was expected on Monday at the White House for talks on Iran and Gaza, an Israeli official said. In Israel, Netanyahu's security cabinet was expected to convene to discuss the next steps in Gaza. On Friday, Israel's military chief said the present ground operation was close to having achieved its goals, and on Sunday, Netanyahu said new opportunities had opened up for recovering the hostages, 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. Palestinian and Egyptian sources with knowledge of the latest ceasefire efforts said that mediators Qatar and Egypt have stepped up their contacts with the two warring sides, but that no date has been set yet for a new round of truce talks. A Hamas official said that progress depends on Israel changing its position and agreeing to end the war and withdraw from Gaza. Israel says it can end the war only when Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel has agreed to a US-proposed 60-day ceasefire and hostage deal, and put the onus on Hamas. "Israel is serious in its will to reach a hostage deal and ceasefire in Gaza," Saar told reporters in Jerusalem. The US has proposed a 60-day ceasefire and the release of half the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the remains of other Palestinians. Hamas would release the remaining hostages as part of a deal that guarantees ending the war. The war began when Hamas fighters stormed into Israel on October 7 2023, killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took 251 hostages back to Gaza in a surprise attack that led to Israel's single deadliest day. Israel's subsequent military assault has killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry, has displaced almost the whole 2.3 million population and plunged the enclave into a humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Edmund Bon Tai Soon, urged ASEAN to move beyond fragmented national efforts and adopt a shared regional framework that holds both governments and businesses accountable to clear and consistent gender rights standards. 'Having a legal framework is very crucial. We are a diverse region, but we must develop a framework, especially now that Malaysia has led the adoption of the new ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which commits to uplifting and protecting the rights of women and children,' he said. PM Anwar: ECERDC records RM6.4b realised investments in 1H2025
KUALA LUMPUR — The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has successfully recorded RM6.4 billion in realised investments in the first six months of this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the ECERDC has also successfully created more than 2,800 jobs to date. 'At the same time, the amount of committed investments has reached RM10.4 billion, surpassing the RM10 billion target set for 2025,' he said in a post on his official Facebook page today. Earlier on, Anwar attended a meeting with the ECERDC to review the latest progress on key performance indicators for the economic corridor, and to discuss the development framework for East Coast Economic Region (ECER) under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, which is currently being formulated by the government. The Prime Minister said the government's strategic plans, especially through the ECER Development Plan, among others, will see eight strategic and high-impact projects scheduled for completion this year. 'I emphasised the importance of prioritising the country's long-term interests in attracting investors, including the importance of ensuring a percentage of technology and skills transfer elements in every approved investment. 'The ECERDC needs to maintain this momentum through an efficient and proactive facilitation process which will strengthen the East Coast Region as a competitive investment destination both nationally and internationally,' he added. In a separate statement, the ECERDC said the manufacturing sector accounted for 59 per cent of the RM6.4 billion realised investments. The council said Pahang led the list with realised investments totalling RM4 billion, followed by Terengganu (RM1.3 billion) and Kelantan (RM1.1 billion), while Johor saw RM13.3 million of investments in agriculture from the development of a biocompost facility in Mersing. 'Key realised investments also include a RM1 billion integrated oil refinery plant, a RM950 million tourism development, and a RM667 million facility to produce Maleic Anhydride in Pahang. 'In Kelantan, a RM1 billion 84-megawatt mini hydroelectric plant is being developed, while Terengganu secured a RM638 million investment for the processing of pulverised quartz,' it added. — BERNAMA
