Zwane says Orlando Pirates star is the best in SA

Orlando Pirates superstar Relebohile Mofokeng will be flashing that big smile of his after reading this post.
As far as the balance of votes, Mamelodi Sundowns superstar Lucas Ribeiro still has a slight edge over Mofokeng. According to AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane, Mofokeng has been very special for carrying a big club like Orlando Pirates at the age of 20.
The Sharpville-born player, who joined the Sea Robbers at the age of 17 from the School of Excellence, grabbed 12 goals and laid 14 assists in 47 matches.
'I don't want to sound controversial, but I think you look at Rele – I think he carried Orlando Pirates,' Zwane said via iDiski Times . Relebohile Mofokeng in action for Orlando Pirates against Cape Town City FC at the DHL Stadium. Image: @safootclassics/X
'But Rele as a youngster doing what he's done this past season, carrying a giant on his shoulder, I think it was something else, it was amazing.
'We need players like him, so others see him performing at this level. And now he's definitely going to go to the World Cup – I don't want people to say I'm picking him; I'm not the national coach. But looking at how coach Broos does, and he integrated to the senior national team,' Zwane added on the Orlando Pirates attacker.
'For him it was a big jump because he never played for the U20, maybe the previous players, but because he's an exceptional talent. There is no doubt about he's gonna make AFCON and the World Cup.
'Also, credit must be given to their coaches – all those coaches from School of Excellence, Orlando Pirates, Jose [Riveiro], Duku Duku Makhanya, who spotted the talent and made life easy for the first team as well to get players promoted,' Zwane added.

SA women's water polo side avoid wooden spoon at Aquatics Championships

Another international tournament, another forgetful series of results the South Africa's men's and women's water polo sides. Playing at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, the South African women's side were drawn in Group D alongside Spain, Great Britain and France. In their opening match, the South African side lost 23-4 (score by quarters: 9-1, 5-0, 4-2, 5-1) to Spain. That was followed by a 12-3 defeat against Great Britain (score by quarters: 5-0, 2-2, 4-1, 1-0) and a 13-6 loss to France (score by quarters: 4-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-0). South Africa finished bottom of the group, scoring just 13 goals while conceding 48. The South African women's side then entered the 13th-16th place bracket where they lost 16-6 against Croatia. They then enjoyed their only success of the tournament in beating Singapore 8-4 (score by quarters: 3-0, 2-3, 2-1, 1-0) in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon. All-told, the South African women's side played five matches, lost four, won one, scored 27 goals and conceded 68 for an average loss of 14-5. Meanwhile, the South African men's side were drawn in Group A alongside Italy, Serbia and Romania. In their opening match, South Africa lost 27-3 (score by quarters: 8-0, 6-3, 4-0, 9-0) to Serbia. They followed that up with a 24-5 loss against Romania (score by quarters: 8-0, 3-1, 7-3, 6-1). In their final group stage match, the South African men's side were humbled 28-4 by Italy (score by quarters: 6-1, 9-0, 8-1, 5-2). South Africa finished bottom of the group, scoring just 12 goals while conceding 79. The South African men's side then entered the 13th-16th place bracket where they were outclassed 27-4 (score by quarters: 5-1, 10-1, 9-2, 3-0) by Australia. That defeat saw them contest the 15th-16th place playoff where they fell short 14-13 (score by quarters: 7-2, 3-4, 3-3, 1-4) against hosts Singapore. All-told, the South African men's side played five matches, lost all five, scored 29 goals and conceded 120 for an average loss of 24-6. Hopefully Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie has a plan up his sleeve to turn around South Africa's water polo fortunes in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Black Caps encounter not just a practice game for Proteas

Proteas top-order batsman Rubin Hermann insists that their T20 Tri-Series game against New Zealand at the Harare Sports Complex on Tuesday is not a dead rubber, with the sides having already made Saturday's final. For the South African camp, it will be more than a dress rehearsal for the final against a Black Caps team who are yet to taste defeat, but more of a chance to fix their error-ridden performance against the same side last week. South Africa paid the price for a sloppy display with ball and then bat, slumping to a 21-run defeat in that showing. The bowlers let the Black Caps batsmen off the hook as they recovered from 74/5 to register a score of 173/5. Despite some thrilling batting from the top order, the Proteas' chase lacked consistency with too many batsmen throwing their wickets away.

'Release the captain': Orlando Pirates fans unhappy with Xoki's contract extension

Some Orlando Pirates supporters are unhappy about the club's decision to trigger a one-year extension in Tapelo Xoki's contract. The 30-year-old defender has served as a regular captain for the team since joining the Buccaneers in 2022 from AmaZulu. While he had two strong seasons initially, some fans believe that injuries and limited playing time impacted Xoki's performance last season. With Xoki and Olisah Ndah sidelined for much of the past season, Orlando Pirates had to rely on Nkosinathi Sibisi and two inexperienced defenders, Mbekezile Mbokazi and Thabiso Sesane. Although Sesane was injured in February, his replacement, Mbokazi, performed impressively and even earned a cap for Bafana Bafana at just 19 years old. Towards the end of the season, Xoki was called back into action but struggled in crucial matches. In the CAF Champions League semi-final, the 30-year-old was held responsible for Pirates' loss to Pyramids in the second leg. In June, it was reported that the former AmaZulu captain would extend his stay with Orlando Pirates, a decision that did not sit well with some fans. @Moshukudumash wrote: 'No , this guy is the biggest threat at our center back , he is easily bullied by psl strikers.' @MduPG wrote: 'Release the Captain & get a faster Defensive player. He can't run with Du Preez on attacks, or chase after Riberio. @Oppenheimer702 wrote: 'It a bad call when you have Sibisi, Mbokazi, Ndah and Sesane. He is currently the worst center back we have!' Orlando Pirates kick off their season in two weeks against Polokwane City in the MTN8. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
