NEW DELHI:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
has once again sidestepped retirement speculation, instead turning the spotlight on
Chennai Super Kings
' (CSK) disappointing IPL campaign and the urgent need for a squad overhaul.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Maxvision Eye Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai, the former India captain admitted that CSK have "holes" to fix and need to start afresh ahead of the next season.

The five-time champions endured one of their worst seasons in IPL history, finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 matches. With regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined, Dhoni had to step in as captain midway through a campaign marred by inconsistency and injury setbacks.
Poll
Should MS Dhoni continue playing for CSK in the next IPL season?
Yes, he should continue
No, it's time to retire
'There were certain holes that we need to plug in. I think our batting order is quite sorted out now.
Rutu will be coming back. A small auction is coming in December… We will try to plug those in,' Dhoni said.

Despite his advancing age — Dhoni turned 44 last month — and the speculation swirling around his playing future, the veteran remains CSK's primary wicketkeeper. However, he emphasised that individual legacy means little if the team falters.
'The beauty of sport is how good you look on paper doesn't matter. What you do consistently over a period of time matters.
You have to pull your socks up once you reach the knockouts and win with two or three big performances. That's how trophies are won,' he said.
Reflecting on back-to-back underwhelming seasons, Dhoni didn't sugarcoat CSK's decline: 'The last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not, you can say, been up to the mark. What is important is to see the learnings.'
And while fans remain uncertain whether Dhoni will don the yellow jersey again, he made it clear that CSK's focus is firmly on rebuilding. 'Next year, when you turn up again, you have to start from scratch,' he concluded.

'Virat, the nation needs you:' Shashi Tharoor's plea to Kohli as India risk losing Anderson-Tendulkar trophy to England

Shashi Tharoor is echoing the thoughts of a million Indian cricket fans right now. As India stare at another series defeat in England – their third since 2007 – the Congress MP has urged Virat Kohli to come out of retirement. Tharoor confessed that he has missed Kohli's presence throughout the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, but more so in the Oval Test, seeing India fail to break what could turn out to be a match-winning partnership between Joe Root and Harry Brook. Shashi Tharoor, right, has a request for Virat Kohli(AFP Images) England were reduced to 106/3, with 268 more to get, when Root and Brook stitched together a century partnership, with both batters completing their respective centuries. Tharoor made a heartfelt plea, perhaps to the BCCI, asking whether there's still a possibility to make Kohli change his mind. Also Read: Follow India vs England 5th Test Day 4 "I've been missing Virat Kohli a few times during this series, but never as much as in this Test match. His grit and intensity, his inspirational presence in the field, not to mention his abundant batting skills, might have led to a different outcome. Is it too late to call him out of retirement? Virat, the nation needs you," Tharoor tweeted. Virat Kohli's Test retirement Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, just days after reports emerged that he had made up his mind to bid adieu to the format he so dearly loved. While Kohli has yet to offer a proper explanation, barring his Instagram post that broke a gazillion hearts, he continues to hold Test cricket in the highest regard. After RCB won the IPL, he placed Test cricket five levels above and just last month, said, "you know it's time when you have to dye your beard every four days." Unlike Rohit Sharma, who also announced his retirement from the format five days before Virat, and who made an appearance at The Oval on Saturday, Kohli has stayed away from this series. Besides his appearance at Wimbledon and then an event hosted by Yuvraj Singh in London, Kohli has stayed away from the public eye. Only time will tell if Kohli listens to what Tharoor has to say, but given the 36-year-old's track record, his decision will remain unchanged.

His milestone now made it 13 Test hundreds against the visitors, the most by any batter, taking him two clear of Steve Smith's 11. This also pushed Root past Kumar Sangakkara's tally of 38 Test centuries, putting him behind only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), and Ricky Ponting (41) on the all-time list. IND vs ENG: Josh Tongue on England's 374-run chase, Akash Deep's batting and The Oval pitch Root also became the first player to cross 6,000 runs in World Test Championship history. Playing his 69th WTC Test, he leads the run charts with 6,000 plus runs, ahead of Smith (4,278), Labuschagne (4,225), Stokes (3,616), and Head (3,300). With 21 centuries and 23 fifties in the cycle, his consistency remains unmatched. His innings came in a pressure situation, with England chasing 374 to seal the series 3-1. After Harry Brook's quickfire 111, Root took charge, frustrating India's depleted seam attack. His fifty came with a push to deep backward square leg, and from there, he kept rotating the strike and finding the gaps with clinical precision. Poll Is Joe Root one of the greatest Test batsmen of all time? Absolutely Somewhat Not really Root's ton was not just another number, it was a reminder of his unmatched ability to rise in big moments, control proceedings under pressure, and etch his name deeper into cricketing history.

Rhodes pleased with the growth of surfing in India

Former South Africa cricketer and brand ambassador for the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), Jonty Rhodes, expressed his happiness in India's growing surfing culture and singled out rising star Kamali Moorthy for special praise. He was speaking during a media interaction at the opening ceremony of the fourth Asian Surfing Championships in Mamallapuram on Sunday. 'I've been associated with the SFI since 2013', said Rhodes. 'My role has been to promote surfing not just as a sport, but as a lifestyle, and what's been most heartening is the transformation within these communities.' Rhodes reserved special praise for 15-year-old Kamali. 'Kamali is someone I've been watching for years. I first saw her when she was just four. Every time I visited Mahabs, there she was — working relentlessly. Now, to see her take the athlete's oath and represent India on the international stage is just incredible. She hasn't just been handed opportunities — she's earned them,' Rhodes said. The fielding great also shared his joy over the Proteas breaking the jinx of not winning a global title by clinching the ICC Test Championship in June. 'It was incredibly emotional. After years of coming close and never crossing the line, to beat Australia in a final was huge. Critics questioned who South Africa had played, but we don't get to play as much Test cricket any more — mainly due to financial and commercial priorities. 'Winning an ICC trophy under those constraints is a testament to the resilience of the team. As someone who went over a decade without silverware during my career, I'm delighted,' said Rhodes. He also felt resting Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the final Test against England at The Oval was the right move. 'Two things about Bumrah stood out early in his career. First, his eagerness to learn — even when he wasn't in the playing XI during his first IPL season. Second is his unique bowling action. He's not conventional, and that gives him a critical edge. That delivery style of his makes life difficult for the batters. Given his workload and importance to Indian cricket, resting him was the right move,' added Rhodes.
