These are the world's top emerging destinations for summer travel in 2025

Time Out13-05-2025
Most people would make a beeline for the beach for their summer holiday, right? Wrong. According to the latest flight data from Mastercard, Japan's sprawling capital Tokyo has emerged as this summer's trending destination.
Using data from the Official Airline Guide, Mastercard analysed the change in flight bookings between 2019 and 2024 to identify the most popular spots for a summer getaway.
According to the credit card company, Tokyo has seen the biggest increase in tourist demand, overtaking Bangkok as the most visited city in 2024. It's thought its popularity is down to the depreciation of the yen, making Japan much cheaper to visit than it has been historically. No wonder, then, that the Japanese city of Osaka came second on the list.
Typically, Tokyo is a popular spring destination, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and temperatures are mild, but the Japanese capital is pretty darn lovely in the summer months, too.
On the last Saturday of July, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival will fill city skies with a spectacular display. Too hot? Head to Oshima, the largest of Tokyo's islands for some swimming and snorkelling – the water here is beautifully clear.
After Osaka, in third place was Paris – clearly travellers are leaning towards city breaks this year.

The hugely underrated foodie seaside town that is one of the best day trips from London

Everyone wants something different out of a day trip. There are the people that just want to lie horizontal on the beach for hours, the ones who want to stop by as many historic sites as possible, and the ones who will spend all their time collecting trinkets from indie shops and galleries. Then, there are the people that go to new places with just one thing on the agenda: good food. Of Time Out's 20 best places for a day trip from London in 2025, there's one place that stands out when it comes to outstanding bars and restaurants to rival those here in the capital. It's... Deal! And you can get there from St Pancras in just one hour and 20 minutes. In Time Out's guide to the town's best bits, travel writer and Deal local Kate Wicks said: 'Along the award-winning High Street, you'll find a wealth of independent shops, bars, and restaurants, but it's Deal's sedate (yet uplifting) atmosphere that remains its biggest draw. Ten miles from Dover, this is a town beside the sea, rather than a seaside town (for kiss-me-quick amusements, head to Margate): it's creative, classy and also happens to be one of the UK's top hidden foodie destinations.' Arrive hungry – Deal is full to the brim with exceptional grub. So much, in fact, that it's Time Out's favourite foodie getaway in the country. There's the classic fish 'n chips from Middle Street Fish Bar, the crab doughnuts at The Rose hotel, the French dishes at Cherub's, Japanese izakaya at The Blue Pelican, the organic wines at Le Pinardier wine bar, the swanky lunch at 81 Beach Street and the pig's head and haggis terrine at Frog & Scot. But there's only so much eating and drinking you can do. Kate also recommends wandering around the historic Deal Castle, filling your boots at Deal Town Market, seeing some art at Linden Hall Studio and spinning vinyl at Smuggler's Records. Make sure to go down to the seafront too, and look at for a grey seal or admire Deal's historic Victorian pier (which is getting a £1 million facelift next year). 5 fruit and vegetable picking farms near Tokyo for a nature-filled day out

Best for: Grapes Tucked into the sloping hills along the Tama River, Kimura Vineyard in Setagaya is a surprisingly spacious grape farm by Tokyo standards. Around 10 grape varieties grow on the grounds and there's also a vegetable garden and a chicken coop, making for a tranquil rural-style retreat without leaving the city. Among the farm's highlights are prized cultivars like Shine Muscat, Nagano Purple and Muscat Noire, making Kimura Vineyard a top spot for grape connoisseurs looking to try out fresh Japanese produce without heading too far out of town. Grapes are only available for purchase through the farm's hands-on picking experience, which is usually offered from late August through September. Be sure to check the website before visiting, as the farm often announces irregular holidays and opening hours online. Once you've harvested your favourite bunch with a pair of scissors, owner Koichiro Kimura recommends heading over to nearby Futakotamagawa Park or the scenic Tama riverbank to enjoy your freshly picked fruit. Prices for the 2025 picking season will be announced in August, and picking experiences are offered on a first-come, first- served basis. Be sure to get there early, as eager pickers start queueing from as early as 6am on peak days.

Tourists are being urged to check what vaccinations they should get before travelling to certain destinations this summer. Holidaymakers travelling to tropical climates could be putting themselves at risk of being exposed to diseases we don't have in the UK. Boots have revealed the most common diseases customers are asking advice on are rabies, Japanese encephalitis and hepatitis A. As many of us prepare to jet off for our summer holidays, holidaymakers are being urged to double-check if there are any vaccinations they should get before travelling. Many countries around the world have different illnesses that we don't have in the UK, so it's important to protect yourself before potentially being exposed. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Some countries may also require you to have proof of vaccinations to be allowed entry, and the last thing you want is to be turned away at customs. Speaking to us about why we need to protect ourselves, Boots pharmacist Claire Nevinson said: 'It's important to take steps to protect our health when we travel abroad so we can focus on enjoying our holiday. Travel vaccinations may be recommended depending on where you are travelling, the activities you will be doing, and your age and general health.' Depending on the country you are travelling to, you may need to get vaccinations or take medication for malaria. | Pexels, Connecting Flights Guide Why do I need to get vaccinations before my holiday? If you're planning on visiting certain parts of the world this year, you may put yourself at risk of being exposed to diseases we don't usually have in the UK. Nevinson explained: 'Travel vaccinations may be recommended for your trip as a measure to help prevent you picking these illnesses up. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK provides protection from several diseases, but it may also be necessary to consider boosters or other vaccinations.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It's also recommended to check if the destination you are planning to visit puts you at risk of malaria; if this is the case, you might need medication to prevent this. It's important that antimalarials are started before you travel to a place where you might be at risk. How do I check what travel vaccinations I need? It's recommended that six to eight weeks before you travel, you either see your GP or a private clinic that can assess the area you are visiting and offer you advice, medication or vaccinations. Some vaccines will need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity, whilst others can involve several doses spread over several weeks or months. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Depending on the country you are travelling to, proof of vaccination may be required before you can enter, so it's important to do as much research as early on as possible. Boots offers a Quick Check Tool that can help you find out if the country you are visiting has any health risks. The last thing you want this summer is to find yourself feeling under the weather on your holiday. This is how you can avoid catching Covid or the flu when flying.
