'It felt like my own personal October the 7th': Gang jailed for kidnapping Jewish-Israeli music producer
Faiz Shah, 23, from Leeds, Mohammad Comrie, 23, from Bradford, and Elijah Ogunnubi-Sime, 20, from Wallington, were jailed at Swansea Crown Court on Friday.
The court heard they had lured Itay Kashti to a remote property in the Brynteg area of Llanybydder on 26 August, posing as representatives from a reputable music production company and inviting him to a music workshop.
During sentencing, Judge Catherine Richards said the planning was "significant and highly sophisticated", targeting an "entirely innocent, hard-working music producer" based on the gang's understanding of his wealth and his Jewish heritage.
The group - who all pleaded guilty to kidnap - each received a sentence of eight years and one month.
The court heard they meticulously plotted the attack on a Telegram group chat. They used false identities to rent out a cottage and organised a taxi to transport Mr Kashti to Wales from his London home.
When the taxi arrived, Mr Kashti was immediately attacked by the three masked men, suffering bruising and extensive facial injuries.
Messages recovered from the defendants show they planned to incapacitate the victim with ketamine, while an imitation pistol was found at the scene.
Mr Kashti was able to slip the chains from the radiator pipe and flee the property, later alerting the police. Officers found the three defendants hiding in nearby fields.
Craig Jones, for the prosecution, said messages exchanged between the defendants referred to Mr Kashti having been on "pro-Israeli marches". They also made allegations about "Palestinian land" and said they had "no remorse" for what they were going to do.
In a statement, Mr Kashti told the court: "As an Israeli, this incident felt like my own personal October the 7th.
"I was kicked to the head several times, handcuffed to a radiator and forced to lie down on the floor. I was threatened and told if I were to try and escape, I'd be killed.
"The awful attack of 7th of October was flashing through my mind as I lay restrained on the floor in handcuffs."
Planning for the kidnap included the defendants using stolen identities and financial documents, multiple mobile phones, the development of escape routes and processes to launder any money extorted from the victim.
The judge told them: "It seems to me that you justified your actions against the victim based on his background, as if he was less worthy of your respect and compassion. That is utterly abhorrent.
"I have no doubt that the victim was targeted due to his Jewish heritage."
Inspector Gareth Jones, of Dyfed-Powys Police, described the "harrowing" impact of the crime on the victim and his family.
"This sentence today reflects the severity of this offence and the ordeal the victim suffered - and we hope it gives the victim a sense of justice," he said.

A man in his 70s who worked at a caravan park has been spared prison for sexually touching a teenager taking selfies before telling her that he wanted to have sex with her, a court has heard. Michael James Simpson, who was 75 years old at the time, kissed the 19-year-old's cheek before running his hand up inside of her leg and making sexual suggestions. Welshpool Magistrates' Court was told that the victim was left "shaken and upset" by the ordeal at Tanat Valley Caravan Park in Carreghofa, near Llanymynech in summer 2022. Dyfed-Powys Police forensically reviewed Simpson's Apple iPad Pro and mobile phone as part of their investigation into the sexual assault. A detective found that the pensioner had been searching terms related to child sexual abuse and bestiality. His internet history showed that he visited sites with extreme pornography involving humans having sexual intercourse with animals. Simpson, who now lives in the West Midlands, was found guilty of sexual assault following a trial in June. He had already admitted possessing extreme pornography at an earlier court hearing in February. Simpson's solicitor, Gurleen Kaur, told the court on Tuesday, July 22, that the 78-year-old "was not aware" that extreme pornography was illegal, which he searched "out of curiosity rather than sexual desires". She said that the number of extreme pornography found on his devices "wasn't an extremely large amount", and that he had shown remorse, had no previous convictions, and had a positive good character before pleading guilty. Ms Kaur added that her client did not accept that the sexual assault took place and he will lodge an appeal. Probation officer Joe Long shared with the court that Simpson was assessed as a risk to young adult females after evidence showed "unhealthy sexual behaviours". The magistrates decided to sentence Simpson, of Woodview Rise, Shirley, Solihull, to 36 weeks in prison for both offences which will run concurrently. However, the custodial sentence was suspended for 18 months because the magistrates were of the view that there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation. Simpson will be placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and subject of a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) for the same period. He must also complete 25 days of rehabilitation as part of his court order and owe £837 to the court.

Protesters stage demo outside hotel used to house migrants
Hundreds of anti-illegal migration protesters and pro-immigration counter-protesters have demonstrated outside a hotel being used to house migrants. Sunday saw the latest in a series of demonstrations outside The Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, after an asylum seeker was charged with allegedly attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl. Protesters waved union flags, while Stand Up To Racism counter-protesters marched to the hotel with signs reading: 'Stop scapegoating refugees and migrants'. Weyman Bennett, co-convener of Stand Up To Racism, told the PA news agency that volunteer security personnel accompanied them. He added: 'We're happy to demonstrate but we're not happy to be attacked by thugs, racists and hooligans.' One man was seen being taken away from the station area by two officers, though it was not clear if he was part of any group. Members of Stand Up To Racism were seen trying to stop people from filming the protesters, as locals watched the march from their driveways. One local man was seen chanting in support of Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, as the march went past. He began shouting 'there's only one Tommy Robinson' when a protester approached him. Essex Police said there was an 'escalation of violence' during protests on July 13, 17, 20 and 24, involving hundreds of people. Aussie café boss dubbed 'Pedo Bro' learns his fate after 'hours of collecting rape vids' in sick underground chat groups
A Sydney businessman who called himself the 'pedo bro' has been jailed after sending dozens of child abuse videos in an online group. James Terence Rebbeck, 40, was arrested at his Leichhardt home, in the city's inner west, in February 2024 as part of a NSW Police investigation into an international paedophile ring. The abhorrent criminal activity involved hundreds of men around the world filming each other watching child abuse material. Jimmy Rebbeck, as he is also known, was sentenced to three years' jail for soliciting, accessing, transmitting and disseminating child abuse material over 15 months in the NSW District Court. The businessman, who grew up on the state's South Coast, previously owned an inner-city Sydney cafe. He sent child abuse material to five users of the encrypted platform Telegram between November 2022 and February 2024, reported by The Sydney Morning Herald. Penrith District Court heard the 40-year-old also sent bestiality material to four people. In November 2022, Mr Rebbeck told a Telegram user he was 'devastated' because he 'lost f***ing everything' after 'hours of collecting rape vids'. Rebbeck asked if he could be added to 'pedo groups'. 'Pedo bro here is desperate,' he wrote. Police first became aware of Mr Rebbeck in April 2023 when they identified a Zoom meeting he was logged into. He was arrested months later and in his initial police interview he admitted to possessing child abuse material. Mr Rebbeck then handed over his pin codes and passwords to police. He pleaded guilty to four child abuse material charges. In court he was asked if he believed he had a sexual interest in children, which he denied and said the offending occurred due to heavy 'stimulant usage'. Jeremy Etkind, Mr Rebbeck's barrister, told the court his client was 'horrified' about his behaviour, but didn't remember it because of his drug use. The Crown prosecutor asked Mr Rebbeck: 'Is a risk you have a sexual interest in children?' He replied: 'I guess, if drugs are involved.' 'It's very easy for people to think 'I'm just looking at photos' but all the images are horrible and they're all real children,' Judge Robert Newlinds SC said. Mr Rebbeck was sentenced to three years' jail with his sentence partially suspended after 20 months on the condition he enter a recognisance of $100 without security. Strike Force Packer officers said the international paedophile ring in question was spread across Australia, Europe, Asia and the US. NSW Police Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said there were 'hundreds' of people allegedly participating in the video calls and exposing themselves. Tracing the children in the files is a 'top priority' said NSW Police.
